If Playwright’s fill() throws while interacting with a CodeMirror 6 editor, check what is already in the editor before trying again. In one reported incident, the text appeared to have been inserted despite the exception; retrying then produced a duplicated saved body. That account is specific to one setup, not proof that every failed fill() changes an editor.

How can a failed fill still lead to duplicated text?

An exception reports that the action did not complete as Playwright expected; it does not, by itself, establish that the page remained unchanged. In an August 19, 2026 account involving a CodeMirror 6 article editor, the author reported that fill() threw, but text appeared in the editor. Retrying was followed by a duplicate in the saved body. The account does not prove why the exception occurred or exactly how the editor reached that state. Incident report

The practical risk is treating an exception as permission to repeat a potentially non-idempotent insertion. First inspect the current editor contents and, when relevant, the saved result. Do not assume either that a failed action made no change or that every failure partially succeeded.

What does Playwright’s fill() do?

Playwright’s locator documentation says fill() waits for actionability checks, focuses the element, fills it, and triggers an input event afterward. The documentation recommends pressSequentially() when a test needs fine-grained keyboard events. This documented sequence describes the API; it does not explain the exception in the CodeMirror incident. Playwright Locator API

How should you diagnose the editor state?

  1. Read the exception and inspect before retrying. Determine whether the editor is empty, partly changed, or already contains the intended text. A thrown action is not enough to establish the resulting page state.
  2. Reproduce on a clean, controlled case. Record the Playwright version, browser and version, CodeMirror version, editor configuration, exact exception, and whether text remains after the action. Compare the editor immediately after input with the content after the application saves and reloads it.
  3. Test one input method at a time. Compare fill() with pressSequentially() if fine-grained keyboard events matter, or with the typing method used in the CodeMirror forum report. Clear or verify the editor before changing methods; do not layer another insertion over an uncertain state.
  4. Check both editor contents and persistence. Assert that the editor contains exactly the intended text, then use the application’s normal save and reload path when persistence is part of the task. A successful promise alone does not establish that the saved body is correct.

Which input method should you use?

Choose based on what the test is meant to model and what the editor actually retains—not on a universal claim that one method fixes CodeMirror 6.

Method or evidence What it establishes What to check in your app
fill() Playwright documents actionability checks, focus, filling, and an input event. Playwright Locator API Whether the editor ends with the intended single copy and whether the application saves it.
pressSequentially() Playwright documents it for cases needing fine-grained keyboard events. Playwright Locator API Whether keyboard-style input matches the behavior the test needs to exercise.
Typing in a CodeMirror 6 test A CodeMirror forum user reported success with Playwright’s typing function after an older CodeMirror 5 textarea-based approach no longer applied. This is an individual report from July 2022, not a guarantee. CodeMirror forum discussion Whether the method works with your editor setup, Playwright version, and browser matrix.

A separate July 2025 issue reported duplicate text in Firefox with Playwright 1.54.1 when a fill() targeted a contenteditable element whose beforeinput handler modified text and the cursor. The reporter said the behavior did not appear in manual testing or their Chrome and Safari runs, and that keyboard input passed their test. This is a related editable-widget report, not evidence that the same mechanism caused the CodeMirror 6 incident. Playwright issue report

What is known—and what is not?

  • The CodeMirror 6 double-insertion scenario comes from one practitioner account; it does not establish how often this happens.
  • Playwright’s documentation describes the behavior of fill() and when to use pressSequentially(), but it does not identify the root cause of that reported exception.
  • The Firefox issue involves a particular Playwright version and a beforeinput handler. It cannot establish the cause or a universal fix for CodeMirror 6.
  • No single input method is shown to work best across every CodeMirror installation, browser, and version. Reproduce and verify with your own project’s combinations.
