Playwright CLI or Test Scripts? A Practical Guide for AI Agents

Use Playwright’s agent CLI for interactive browser work and Playwright Test scripts for repeatable regression coverage. Here’s how to choose, run, and combine them.

Use Playwright’s agent-focused CLI when an AI agent needs to inspect a live page or complete a short browser task. Use Playwright Test scripts when you need repeatable checks that can be reviewed, rerun, and executed in CI. They solve different problems, and an agent completing a task once is not the same as having a regression test.

What “Playwright CLI” means here

Playwright has more than one command-line workflow. The agent-focused Playwright CLI is designed for coding agents to control a browser through commands. Separately, Playwright Test’s general CLI runs code-based test suites with commands such as npx playwright test. The latter is the test runner, not the agent-focused browser-control interface. In the agent CLI workflow, the agent opens a page, receives current page state and an accessibility snapshot, then uses references in that snapshot to act on elements. It can inspect the updated page and decide what to do next. Playwright describes it as “a command-line interface for browser automation designed for coding agents.”

The CLI documentation also offers optional installable skills with guidance for tasks such as debugging tests, mocking requests, managing browser sessions and storage state, generating tests, and working with traces or video. The documentation describes using the CLI without installing those skills as well. See the agent CLI skills guide.

Choose by the job you need done

Task Best starting point Reason
Ask an agent to inspect a live page or complete a short browser task Agent-focused Playwright CLI It exposes browser actions through commands and returns snapshots with references the agent can use in follow-up actions. Playwright CLI introduction
Build a reusable check for a journey or regression Playwright Test script The runner can select tests and configured browser projects, and the suite can run in CI. Test CLI; running tests; CI guide
Debug an existing test Playwright Test debugging tools The runner documentation covers headed mode, UI mode, and Playwright Inspector. Running tests
Convert agent exploration into ongoing coverage Use both workflows An agent can explore and help create a test, while the resulting script provides a reviewable check to run again. Playwright’s Test Agents documentation describes planning scenarios, generating test files, and running or repairing tests. Test Agents

This is a workflow choice based on documented capabilities, not a claim that one interface is universally faster or more reliable.

How to run and narrow a Playwright Test suite

Playwright Test runs headless by default. Its general CLI supports selecting a file or test title, choosing a configured project, and opening headed, UI, or debug modes. The examples below use documented options; command details can vary by installed Playwright version.

  1. Run the suite: npx playwright test.

  2. Run one file: npx playwright test tests/example.spec.ts.

  3. Select a test by title: npx playwright test -g "title text".

  4. Choose a configured browser project: npx playwright test --project=chromium. Replace chromium with a project configured in your Playwright setup.

  5. For visual interaction, add --headed; for the test UI, use --ui; to launch debugging with Inspector, use --debug. For example: npx playwright test --debug.

  6. Check the installed version’s options with npx playwright --help.

These are commands for Playwright Test’s runner, not commands for the agent-focused CLI. For the agent interface and its current command reference, use the agent CLI documentation.

Why an agent’s successful run is not a regression test

An interactive agent session shows that the agent was able to perform an action in that session. A script records executable steps and expectations that a team can inspect and run again. If a flow matters after code changes, save the important checks as Playwright Test tests rather than treating a successful exploratory session as durable coverage.

Exploration can still be a productive way to discover what should be tested. The distinction is lifecycle: the agent CLI supports interaction and investigation; a maintained test suite supports repeatable verification. Playwright’s Test Agents material describes planner, generator, and healer roles for planning scenarios, creating test files, and running or repairing tests. That page is labeled Next, so confirm the current-version documentation before depending on those agents. Playwright’s release notes associate their introduction with version 1.56: release notes.

Running scripts in CI

CI is a natural place to rerun a test suite. Playwright’s CI guide covers installing the package and browsers, then running tests in a CI workflow. Playwright recommends one worker in CI by default to prioritize stability and reproducibility; parallelization and sharding are options for setups suited to them. Match worker use to your CI capacity rather than assuming that more parallelism is always better.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

Playwright’s agent CLI introduction characterizes its output as token-efficient compared with MCP. That is Playwright’s qualitative comparison between CLI and MCP, not an independent measurement and not a comparison between the agent CLI and Playwright Test scripts. The reviewed official pages provide no named, dated quantitative comparison of those two testing workflows for token use, speed, reliability, or total cost. Choose between them based on whether you need interactive exploration or reusable tests, not on an unsupported performance figure.
