Choose PS Remote Play if you own or can access a PS4 or PS5 and want to control that console from your computer. They are different systems, and Sony says games that must be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium cannot be played with Remote Play.
Cloud streaming and Remote Play do different jobs
PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming runs an eligible game on Sony’s service and sends the video to the PlayStation Plus PC app. Remote Play runs the game on your own PS4 or PS5 and streams that console’s video and controls to a Windows PC or Mac. Your first decision is therefore whether a console is part of your setup.

Sony’s PlayStation Plus catalog guidance says cloud streaming is a Premium benefit, but only selected games are streamable and availability can vary. Sony’s Remote Play documentation separately lists games and accessories that are incompatible.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThink of the services as two different routes to a screen, not two ways to launch the same games. With Premium streaming, your eligibility comes from the account’s membership and the title’s streamable status. With Remote Play, access comes from the console and its supported game library. Having Premium does not make a streaming-only title Remote Play-compatible, and having a console does not grant access to the Premium PC app without the required membership.

Which option is better for your situation?
Choose Premium cloud streaming when you do not have a usable console
Premium is the practical choice when you want to browse eligible PlayStation Plus games on a PC and do not want to buy, keep powered, or remotely configure a PS4 or PS5. You need an adult PlayStation account, the Premium tier, the PC app, a compatible controller and a sufficiently stable broadband connection. The trade-off is a limited, changing selection rather than access to every PlayStation release.
This is also the straightforward choice if your goal is to try eligible catalog titles without installing them as ordinary PC games. The app streams the game; it does not turn the PC into a PlayStation console or give it a permanent copy of the title. Check the catalog entry itself before subscribing on the assumption that a particular game will be available to stream: membership in a catalog and streaming eligibility are not the same thing.
Choose Remote Play when your games are on a PS4 or PS5
Remote Play is better when the console already contains the games, saves and settings you want. The PC acts as a remote screen and controller; it does not create a second game library. The console must be turned on or in an appropriate rest mode, connected to the internet and associated with your account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
It is the more natural option when you want to continue using a game already installed on your console, including a title or add-on you own outside the PlayStation Plus streaming catalog. The game still runs on the console, so the console must remain available and the network connection between it and the PC matters. It is not a way to play from a PC when the PS4 or PS5 is unavailable.
Do not choose based on an assumed latency winner
Sony publishes connection guidance and compatibility rules, not a controlled, same-network latency comparison between the two services. Cloud and Remote Play performance depends on your internet path, congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, distance to the service or console, and the game. Neither option can be promised as universally more responsive.
The 5 Mbps figure for the PC app is a minimum, not a performance guarantee, and Sony’s 15 Mbps guidance for 1080p is not a promise that every connection will deliver that picture consistently. Remote Play is described as requiring a high-speed network, but Sony’s cited Remote Play page does not give a directly comparable speed threshold. If responsiveness matters, test the setup and network you will actually use rather than treating either service’s minimum as a latency rating.
What you need for PlayStation Plus Premium streaming on PC
Account, plan and app
- An adult PlayStation account. Sony’s getting-started guide describes PC streaming as an 18+ feature.
- An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership. Streaming is not included in the lower plans.
- The free PlayStation Plus PC app downloaded from Sony’s PC support page.
- A game listed as streamable in the supported Game Catalog or Classics Catalog. Some catalog games cannot be streamed.
Plan choice is therefore part of the cost comparison: Premium is a requirement for this PC streaming route, not an optional way to improve a lower-tier membership. Remote Play is a console-access feature and should not be confused with Premium cloud streaming. The official pages cited here do not establish a subscription price, so check Sony’s current local plan page for the amount and terms where you live.
Internet connection
Sony lists broadband of at least 5 Mbps for the PC app and recommends a wired connection. Its US plan page lists 15 Mbps for 1080p. Those figures are published thresholds, not guarantees of a particular resolution, frame rate or input response in your home.

- The Dualshock 4 wireless controller can be easily recharged by plugging it into your PlayStation 4 system, even when in rest mode, or with any standard charger using a USB cable (type A to micro B sold separately)
A speed test can help identify whether a connection falls below Sony’s stated minimum, but it cannot by itself prove the stream will be stable: congestion, wireless interference and the route between your home and the service also matter. If a stream is poor, compare wired Ethernet with Wi-Fi and check again at a different time before concluding that the service or PC is the sole cause.
Controller
Sony explicitly names DUALSHOCK 4 for the PlayStation Plus PC app. Some third-party XInput controllers may work, but Sony does not guarantee full compatibility. Check the controller, operating system and game combination before relying on an unlisted pad.
Controller support is one place the choices diverge. Sony explicitly lists DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense and DualSense Edge for Remote Play on PC and Mac, while the PS Plus PC app guidance specifically names DUALSHOCK 4. If you are buying or borrowing a controller for one service, confirm compatibility for that app rather than assuming that a pad recognized by Windows will work fully in every PlayStation streaming game.
PC specifications and the Windows-version discrepancy
Sony’s PC app support page lists these minimum specifications:
| Item | Minimum listed by Sony | Recommended configuration listed by Sony |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 | Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 |
| Processor | Intel Core i3 at 2.0 GHz | Intel Core i3 at 3.5 GHz or AMD A10 at 3.8 GHz or faster |
| Storage | 300 MB available | 300 MB available |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM | 2 GB RAM |
| Other | Sound card and USB port | Sound card and USB port |
Sony’s separate getting-started guide says Windows 10 is the minimum, while the app support page includes Windows 8.1. Because Sony’s live pages conflict and requirements can change, verify the current app page for your region before installing. Do not treat the older Windows 8.1 wording as a guarantee that the current app will support that version.
These are the PC app’s published system requirements, not a statement that an older machine will deliver a particular streaming quality. Likewise, the relatively small listed storage requirement does not mean the stream is a locally installed game; the app is the software needed to access the streaming service.
How to start Premium cloud streaming on a PC
- Confirm that your PlayStation account is an adult account with an active Premium membership.
- Open Sony’s PlayStation Plus on PC support page and download the PlayStation Plus PC app.
- Install the app on a compatible Windows PC, then sign in with the account that holds Premium.
- Connect a DUALSHOCK 4 or another controller that you have verified as compatible. A USB connection can simplify pairing and troubleshooting.
- Browse the games marked as available for streaming. Do not assume that every Game Catalog or Classics Catalog entry is streamable.
- Select a supported title and choose the app’s stream or start control. The game runs remotely; it is not installed as a normal PC game.
Streaming has functional limits. Sony says Party Chat is not currently supported in the PC streaming experience, local multiplayer is limited to two players on compatible games, and game add-ons or downloadable content cannot be used while streaming a PlayStation Plus game.

What you need for PS Remote Play on PC
Console and network
Remote Play requires a PS4 or PS5 and the PS Remote Play app. Sony describes it as controlling the console over a high-speed network. The console must be linked to your account and configured for Remote Play; if you want to wake it from rest mode, enable the relevant rest-mode network settings on the console. A wired connection to the console or PC is usually the simplest way to reduce local wireless variability, although Sony does not publish a single comparable speed threshold on the cited Remote Play page.
Unlike Premium streaming, Remote Play’s game source is your own console. That makes it useful when you are away from the room where the console is set up, but it also means the console and its network connection remain part of the setup. A PC alone cannot provide Remote Play access to a console library that is not available to you.
Supported controllers and keyboard input
Sony lists DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense and DualSense Edge for Remote Play on PC and Mac. Windows and Mac users can use keyboard keys in games that support hardware keyboards, but that is a game-specific feature, not a replacement for a controller in every title.
Current Remote Play PC requirements
Sony’s UK support page lists the following requirements; regional pages should be checked because support details can change:
| Requirement | Windows PC minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 |
| Processor | Seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later |
| Storage | 100 MB or more available |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM or more |
| Display | 1024 × 768 or higher |
| Other | Sound card and USB port |
The same page lists macOS Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia and Tahoe for Mac users. The exact supported versions are volatile, so use the regional support page rather than relying on an old installer description.
That means the PC software choice also matters: Sony documents a Windows PC app for PlayStation Plus streaming, while Remote Play supports Windows PC and Mac. Do not assume that the availability of Remote Play on Mac means the PlayStation Plus PC streaming app is also available there.
How to use Remote Play from a PC
- On the PS4 or PS5, sign in with the PlayStation account you will use in the Remote Play app.
- Enable Remote Play in the console’s system settings. If you want rest-mode wake-up, enable internet connection and network wake options in the console’s rest-mode settings.
- Install the PS Remote Play app from Sony’s PC and Mac support guide or your local PlayStation support site.
- Connect a compatible DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense or DualSense Edge controller to the PC.
- Launch the app, sign in with the same account used on the console and choose PS5 or PS4.
- Allow the app to search for the console. Once connected, use the controller to navigate and launch a game as if you were in front of the console.
If the console is not found, confirm that both devices are online, the same account is being used, Remote Play is enabled, the console software is current and security software is not blocking the app. A wired connection for one or both devices can help identify whether Wi-Fi is the cause.
Also distinguish a discovery problem from an unsupported-game problem. If the app connects to the console but a particular game will not work, check the title’s requirements: finding the PS4 or PS5 does not remove Remote Play’s restrictions on VR, extra peripherals or Premium-only streamed games.

Game and feature limits that affect the decision
Premium streaming has a catalog boundary
Premium PC streaming covers selected PS4 Game Catalog titles and selected Classics Catalog titles. Catalog membership does not automatically mean cloud-streaming eligibility, and availability can vary by country, plan and time. Sony’s catalog page also warns that certain games may not be streamable.
Remote Play cannot stream Premium-only games
Sony states that games requiring a PS Plus Premium stream are not compatible with Remote Play. Remote Play also excludes titles that require PlayStation VR or PlayStation VR2 and titles needing additional peripherals beyond DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense or DualSense Edge. Those exclusions mean Remote Play is not a universal pass-through for the entire console library.
Local multiplayer and chat differ
For the PC PlayStation Plus app, Sony limits local multiplayer to two players on compatible games and says Party Chat is unsupported. Remote Play mirrors the console experience, but controller count, game support and console features still determine what multiplayer options work. Do not assume that a game’s local or online features behave identically in both paths.

Add-ons and saves
When streaming a PlayStation Plus game through the PC app, Sony says game add-ons and DLC cannot be used. Remote Play uses the game installation and account data on your console, so it is the more appropriate route when your play depends on installed expansions or console-specific settings.
These restrictions can settle the choice even when both services otherwise seem convenient. A game that is in the catalog but not marked streamable is not a cloud-streaming candidate. A title that depends on VR or an extra accessory is not a Remote Play candidate under Sony’s stated compatibility rules. If your priority is a specific game or feature, check that exact title and its requirements before choosing a service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Connection and picture troubleshooting
Stuttering, blocky video or disconnects
- Test the PC and, for Remote Play, the console on wired Ethernet.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups and video streams on the same network.
- Prefer a 5 GHz or newer Wi-Fi band when Ethernet is impractical, and move closer to the access point.
- Check whether the problem occurs at particular times; household or ISP congestion can affect either service.
- For Premium, treat 5 Mbps as a floor rather than a performance guarantee; Sony lists 15 Mbps for 1080p, but actual quality still varies.
For Remote Play, test the console’s connection as well as the PC’s: a strong signal at the computer does not resolve a weak or congested connection at the console. For Premium, there is no local console to test, so focus on the PC’s route to the service and other traffic using the home connection. Make one change at a time—such as switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet—so you can tell whether it helped.
Controller not responding
- Reconnect the controller by USB and close other software that may capture gamepad input.
- Use DUALSHOCK 4 for the broadest overlap between the two documented services, or use DualSense/DualSense Edge with Remote Play.
- If using a third-party XInput pad with the PlayStation Plus app, remember that Sony does not guarantee full compatibility.
A game is missing or will not start
- For Premium, verify that the title is specifically marked as streamable in your regional catalog.
- For Remote Play, check for VR, special-peripheral or Premium-streaming requirements.
- Confirm that the account, subscription and region match the service being used.
Decision checklist
| If this describes you… | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| I do not own or cannot access a PS4/PS5 | Premium cloud streaming | It is the only one of the two that does not depend on a local console |
| I own a PS5 and want its installed games on a laptop | Remote Play | The game runs on your console and Remote Play controls it |
| I mainly want selected subscription catalog titles | Premium cloud streaming | Its purpose is access to eligible catalog streams |
| I rely on installed DLC or expansions | Remote Play | Premium PC streaming does not support game add-ons or DLC |
| I need VR or unusual peripherals | Neither is guaranteed | Remote Play excludes those requirements, and Premium only supports eligible streamable titles |
| I want the broadest controller choice | Remote Play | Sony explicitly lists DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense and DualSense Edge |
| I use a Mac | Remote Play | Sony lists Mac support for Remote Play; the PS Plus PC app is a Windows option |
| I need to play a specific title with its DLC | Check the console version and use Remote Play if supported | PS Plus PC streaming does not support game add-ons or DLC |
Verdict
For a PC-only setup, PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming is the direct fit: it provides selected PS4 and Classics Catalog games without requiring a PS4 or PS5 beside you. For anyone who already has a console and wants to play its installed library from a computer, Remote Play is the better tool. Premium’s subscription, changing catalog, unsupported DLC and two-player limit make it a narrower service, while Remote Play’s dependence on a console and its VR, peripheral and Premium-streaming exclusions prevent it from replacing cloud streaming. Verify the current regional support pages before committing, especially the Windows version, catalog availability and controller requirements.

Do I need PlayStation Plus Premium for Remote Play?
Remote Play is a feature for controlling a PS4 or PS5 over a network, not a way to access Premium’s cloud-streaming catalog. Sony explicitly says games that must be streamed using a PS Plus Premium membership are not compatible with Remote Play.
Can every PlayStation Plus catalog game be streamed on PC?
No. Sony describes PC streaming as covering selected PS4 Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles, and warns that some catalog games cannot be streamed. Check the regional catalog listing for the specific game.
What internet speed do I need for PlayStation Plus streaming on PC?
Sony lists a minimum of 5 Mbps for the PC app and 15 Mbps for 1080p on its US plan page. Those figures are guidance, not a guarantee of image quality, frame rate or latency. Sony describes Remote Play as requiring a high-speed network but does not provide a directly comparable speed threshold on the cited page.
Which controllers work with PlayStation Plus PC streaming and Remote Play?
Sony names DUALSHOCK 4 for the PlayStation Plus PC app and lists DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense and DualSense Edge for Remote Play on PC and Mac. Some third-party XInput controllers may work with the PS Plus app, but Sony does not guarantee full compatibility.
Can I use Remote Play on a Mac?
Yes. Sony lists Remote Play support for Mac and names supported macOS versions on its regional support page. The PlayStation Plus PC streaming app is documented for Windows PC, so do not assume it is available on Mac.
Can I use DLC or Party Chat while streaming PlayStation Plus games on PC?
Sony says game add-ons and DLC cannot be used while streaming a PlayStation Plus game through the PC app, and Party Chat is not currently supported there. Local multiplayer is limited to two players on compatible games.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Premium cloud streaming for eligible catalog games on a Windows PC without depending on a console; choose Remote Play to control a PS4 or PS5 you can access. Premium requires the membership and offers a limited streamable catalog, while Remote Play requires the console and cannot handle Premium-only streamed games or certain VR and peripheral titles.
