An AI-generated layout becomes a working website only after you choose how it will be maintained and published, replace placeholders with trustworthy content, connect real data and behavior, and check the result across screen sizes. A polished mockup is a useful starting point, not proof that its links, forms, content, or responsive states are ready to go live.
First decide whether you need editable source code in a project or prefer to build and publish inside a managed visual platform. That choice affects what you can hand off, how you maintain the site, and which conversion workflows will fit your existing design.

What counts as a working website?
A generated page can look complete while still being only a visual proposal. A real site must also have a delivery path, accurate content, functioning navigation and controls, any necessary data connections, and layouts that remain usable at the screen sizes your visitors use. Figma’s product description says, “An AI website generator turns a description into a working, responsive site, including layout, content, and code.” Treat that as a description of its offering, not as independent proof that every generated result is production-ready.
The difference matters because a screenshot does not tell you what a menu should do, where a form should send its data, whether a button has a valid destination, or how a page behaves when its text is longer than the placeholder. Figma’s own guidance advises connecting a backend and testing flows with real content before publishing; it also cautions that generated copy can sound plausible while being wrong about the thing being built.

Think of the AI output as a first draft of the interface. Your job is to turn that draft into a site whose content is dependable, whose controls have defined outcomes, and whose chosen publishing route suits the people who will maintain it.
Choose how the website will be delivered
Make this decision before investing time in conversion and refinement. A workflow that produces code you can maintain in a project is not interchangeable with one that publishes inside a managed visual platform. The visual result may look similar, but the handoff, editing model, and long-term dependencies differ.
| Route | What the documented workflow provides | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Figma Make and code-oriented workflow | Figma describes generating and refining a responsive site, working visually or in code, connecting data, testing flows, and publishing or pushing to a repository. Its AI code generator describes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript generation with code export or publishing options. | You need access to generated code or want a route that can connect to a code project. | Check the current plan requirements and export availability before committing; these can change. The source material does not specify a universal plan, export format, or repository setup. |
| Framer visual workflow | Framer describes importing Figma layers, groups, and structure, then refining layout, breakpoints, interactions, animations, CMS fields, SEO metadata, and publishing a live site. | You want to refine and publish visually within a managed website platform. | Framer says this route creates a live React-based website, not a downloadable static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript folder. |
| Webflow Figma conversion plugin | Webflow documents converting Figma auto-layout frames into Webflow and syncing a design system. | Your design is in Figma and you want to continue in Webflow’s visual environment. | Check that the specific frames and design system fit the plugin workflow; the documentation describes auto-layout conversion, not a guarantee that every arbitrary design transfers perfectly. |
| Webflow AI site builder | Webflow documents an AI builder route for creating a new site or working with an existing site originally made with that builder. | You are starting a site through that builder or already have an eligible site. | Webflow’s Help Center, updated September 11, 2026, says the AI builder cannot be applied to a pre-existing site that was not originally built with it. This is distinct from the Figma conversion plugin. |
These are vendor-documented capabilities, not the results of a comparative test. The table can help you identify a route, but it does not establish which tool will require the least effort for your particular layout.

- Who will maintain the site? If a developer or team needs source code in a project, investigate the code-oriented route and confirm what you can export or push. If editors need to make visual changes and publish in one platform, assess a managed visual workflow.
- What do you already have? Identify whether the starting point is a Figma design, generated code, an existing website, or only a visual concept. Webflow’s AI builder eligibility differs from its Figma plugin workflow, so do not treat them as one universal import feature.
- What has to connect? List any forms, content collections, dynamic information, or backend services the site needs. Confirm that the chosen workflow can support those requirements before you build around it.
- How much control do you need? Consider whether the people maintaining the site need access to code, content management, SEO settings, and visual editing. Framer documents CMS and SEO controls in its visual workflow; the cited product descriptions do not establish equivalent details for every route.
- What must be checked before paying or migrating? Verify current plan requirements, export availability, platform compatibility, and the exact handoff. Do not assume an advertised capability is included in every plan or works with every pre-existing site.
Turn the layout into a page specification
Before importing, generating more code, or polishing spacing, write down what each visible part of the design is for. This short specification prevents a common failure: faithfully reproducing the appearance while leaving the site’s actual behavior undecided.
- List the pages and their purpose. Record the intended audience and the main action for each page. A landing page might explain a service and invite an inquiry; a support page might help visitors find an answer. These purposes determine what content and interactions need to exist.
- Inventory every control. Note each navigation item, button, text link, menu, form field, tab, accordion, and interactive card. For each one, state the expected result: navigate to a destination, reveal content, submit information, or change a view.
- Identify data dependencies. Mark which content is fixed and which must come from a data source, backend, or content collection. If a form submits information, determine where that submission should go and what a visitor should see after submitting it.
- Replace placeholder content in the plan. Gather approved headings, body copy, images, labels, and destinations. Include realistic content lengths, not just short sample text, because longer text can change wrapping and page height.
- Record important display conditions. Note which elements need to change or rearrange on narrow screens, such as a navigation menu collapsing or a multi-column section becoming a single column. Treat the initial AI layout as a proposal until these conditions are checked.
This specification need not be a formal technical document. A page-by-page checklist is enough if it answers what each element is, what it should do, and what content or service it depends on.

Build the site in a deliberate sequence
1. Prepare the source and confirm the route
Keep the original design or prototype available as a reference. If the site needs to live in a code project, verify that the selected workflow gives you the code handoff you expect. If you plan to publish in a visual platform, confirm that your starting file or existing site is eligible for the chosen conversion route.
For a Figma design going to Webflow, the documented plugin converts auto-layout frames and can sync a design system. That is a specific workflow; it does not mean Webflow’s AI builder can be applied to any existing site. For Framer, the documented path is to import Figma layers, groups, and structure and then refine the result in Framer. It is a managed visual publishing path rather than a static-file export.
2. Generate or convert, then inspect the structure
Use the selected tool to bring the design into its destination, but do not equate a successful conversion with a finished site. Check that the resulting page contains the intended sections, hierarchy, images, and text areas. Look for missing content, duplicated elements, or places where the imported structure does not reflect the role of the original component.
In a code-oriented workflow, inspect the generated code and understand where the page structure, styling, and behavior are represented before making changes. Figma describes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript generation and options to export or publish code, but the exact plan requirements and export availability should be verified for your account. In a visual builder, inspect the imported layers and page structure in the editor before adding behavior.
3. Replace temporary content with approved content
Substitute real copy, images, labels, and destinations for generated or placeholder material. Review factual statements with the person or source responsible for them; fluent wording is not evidence of accuracy. Check that image choices are appropriate and that important information is not embedded only in an image when visitors need it as text.

Use the final or realistically sized content before fine-tuning layout. A short placeholder heading may fit on one line while the approved title wraps to three; a small sample paragraph may hide overflow in a card or push a call to action below the intended position. Content is part of the interface, not a last-minute decoration.

4. Connect data, forms, and other services
For every element that depends on outside information or accepts visitor input, identify the destination and expected outcome. Connect the required backend or data source, then verify that the page displays useful content when the connection is working and provides an understandable response when it is not.
A form is not complete because its fields appear on screen. Check that each field label communicates what to enter, that the submission has a defined destination, and that the visitor receives a confirmation or clear error state. The exact connection steps vary by tool and service; the documented Figma guidance establishes the need to wire up a backend and test with real content, but does not prescribe one backend or one universal form setup.
5. Implement the interaction model
Work through the control inventory and implement the behavior you specified. Navigation should lead to real destinations. Buttons should perform the action their labels promise. Menus should have a usable open and closed state. Any tab, accordion, or other interactive component should communicate which content is active or revealed.
Do not add an interaction simply because the design contains a control-like shape. If an element is decorative, make its presentation clear; if it is actionable, give it a defined result. This avoids dead buttons and misleading affordances that make an otherwise attractive page feel unfinished.

6. Refine layout and responsive states
Review the page at both narrow and wide viewport sizes, then adjust the actual breakpoints and layout rather than assuming an automatic responsive setting has solved the problem. Framer documents responsive refinement as part of its workflow, and Figma describes responsive site generation; neither capability establishes that every generated layout works correctly at every width.
Check each page for text wrapping, navigation collapse, image cropping, spacing, and the size and placement of controls. Verify that content remains in a sensible reading order and that no important element is clipped or pushed off screen. Use the longest real headings and a representative amount of real body copy during this pass.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the result before publishing
Testing should follow the user’s path through the site, not just a visual review of the home page. Figma’s stated process is to connect a backend, test flows with real content, and then publish. Use the following checks on the actual version you plan to release:
- Links and navigation: follow each menu item, button, and text link. Confirm that each destination is correct and that visitors can move between the intended pages.
- Forms: submit a realistic entry and check what happens next. Verify the expected confirmation or failure message and, where relevant, that the data reaches the intended destination.
- Interactive states: open and close menus, activate tabs or accordions, and check any animation or state change. Confirm that the control remains understandable after it changes.
- Content accuracy: review headings, descriptions, labels, and claims against their authoritative source. Remove placeholder language and check that the approved copy is present in every relevant state.
- Responsive presentation: inspect narrow and wide layouts. Look for cramped navigation, unexpected wrapping, awkward image crops, inconsistent spacing, and controls that are difficult to reach or use.
- Data-dependent areas: check that connected content appears as expected and that a missing or unsuccessful response does not leave a confusing blank area.
Fix problems in the order that affects visitors most: broken destinations or submissions first, misleading or inaccurate content next, and layout issues that obscure or impede content after that. Then repeat the relevant flow; changing a page can introduce a new problem in a state that previously worked.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing a workflow based on appearance alone
Two tools may produce a similar-looking page while offering different code access and publishing models. Decide based on ownership, editing, and maintenance needs, not just whether the preview resembles the design.
Best Value
Assuming an import creates a finished website
Conversion can carry over design structure, but the documented workflows still include refinement. Review the converted hierarchy and layout, then implement and test the behavior that the original visual could not specify.
Using generated copy without checking it
Generated wording can read smoothly and still be inaccurate. Verify claims, labels, and instructions before publication; replace placeholder content with material appropriate to the actual site.
Testing only one viewport or one happy path
A page that looks fine in one preview can still have broken navigation, incomplete form behavior, or awkward wrapping elsewhere. Test the controls and content at narrow and wide sizes with realistic copy.

Confusing distinct platform features
Webflow’s Figma plugin and its AI builder are separate routes. The AI builder’s eligibility restriction applies to pre-existing sites not originally made with that builder; it should not be read as a claim that the Figma plugin has the same input requirements, or that the builder imports every arbitrary layout.
Assuming plans and export terms are permanent
Plan requirements, export availability, and product capabilities can change. Check current terms for the account and workflow you intend to use before relying on a particular handoff or publishing option.
What to have ready when you publish
Before making the site public, confirm that the published version—not only the editor preview—contains the approved content and working connections. Keep a concise release checklist for the pages and visitor flows that matter:
- All intended pages and destinations are present.
- Each visible control has the expected behavior.
- Forms and data connections have been checked with realistic content.
- Generated claims and placeholder text have been reviewed and replaced where needed.
- Narrow and wide layouts have been inspected after the final content was added.
- The team responsible for ongoing changes understands whether the site is maintained as code or inside a managed platform.
The last point is especially important for handoff. A site that is technically online can still be hard to maintain if its owner expects editable source code but receives a platform-based publishing workflow, or expects visual editing but is handed a code project. Make that maintenance model clear to the people who will own the site after launch.
