PlayStation Plus Extra vs. Premium: Which Tier Has the Games You Want?

Extra and Premium both include the Game Catalog. Premium adds classics, trials, cloud streaming and other benefits in the US comparison—but check your region’s live catalog before subscribing.

Both PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium include the Game Catalog. Premium adds a Classics Catalog, select game trials, cloud streaming and—on PlayStation’s US comparison page—the Sony Pictures Catalog. If the games you want are already in Extra’s catalog and you do not need Premium’s extras, Extra is the more direct fit. Check your local catalog before subscribing: game availability changes by region and over time.

What Extra and Premium have in common

Both tiers include the Game Catalog, Ubisoft+ Classics, monthly games, online multiplayer, exclusive discounts, exclusive content, cloud storage and Share Play, according to PlayStation’s US plan comparison. The shared benefits mean that the deciding factor is usually whether you want a game or feature that Premium adds.

What Premium adds

In PlayStation’s US comparison, Premium includes everything in Extra plus the Classics Catalog, Game Trials, cloud streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog. The exact benefits and availability can differ by country; check the plan page for your territory before relying on a feature.

  • Classics Catalog: Access to eligible classic games beyond Extra’s Game Catalog.
  • Game Trials: Time-limited trials for select games, rather than an assurance that every game can be tried.
  • Cloud streaming: Supported games can be streamed on eligible devices, subject to title and territorial restrictions.
  • Sony Pictures Catalog: Listed as a Premium benefit on the US plan page; check local availability and the current selection.

Compare the US plan benefits and prices

This comparison reflects PlayStation’s US plan page when accessed on October 7, 2026. Prices are recurring subscription charges, not universal quotes, and can change. Check your local PlayStation Store for current prices and billing terms.

How to check whether a specific game is included

  1. Open PlayStation’s PS Plus games page for the relevant territory and search for the exact title.
  2. Confirm which catalog contains it—Game Catalog or Classics Catalog—and whether your intended tier includes that catalog.
  3. Check the game’s listing for the supported access method. A title’s presence in the service does not by itself mean it can be streamed.
  4. Recheck close to purchase. PlayStation says catalog availability varies by tier and over time, and titles can leave the service.

For a single must-play game, this check matters more than the tier name: make sure the exact title is currently offered in your region before paying for a subscription.

Choose based on how you will play

Choose Extra if its catalog covers your games

Extra is the practical choice when the games you want are in the Game Catalog and you do not expect to use Premium-only classics, trials, streaming or the Sony Pictures Catalog. You still get the shared benefits listed above.

Choose Premium for a specific added feature

Premium makes sense when you want an eligible Classics Catalog game, expect to use trials for eligible titles, or will use cloud streaming or the Sony Pictures Catalog where those benefits are available. Weigh that use against the price difference for your chosen billing period.

Downloads, streaming and device limits

PS5 games can only be downloaded to a PS5. PlayStation’s games FAQ says Premium cloud streaming is available on PS4, PS5 and PC, but not every title is streamable; territory and age restrictions can also apply. The plan page may emphasize PS5 streaming, so check the game’s listing and local service details for your device.

PlayStation states that cloud streaming needs a connection of at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p. These are Sony’s stated minimums, not a guarantee that streaming quality will be stable on every connection.

Catalog changes to keep in mind

Catalog inclusion is not permanent. PlayStation’s US plan page states: “From January 2026, PS4 games will be added only intermittently.” That is a statement about additions on the US page, not a promise about how often any specific title will appear or remain available. Confirm the current listing in your region before subscribing.
