Buy a game separately if you want dependable access to one particular title over time, it is missing from the catalog or may leave before you finish, and its current price makes sense for you. There is no universal break-even point: the answer depends on the games, prices, subscription period, and benefits you will actually use.
Start with the games you actually plan to play
Extra is a subscription, not a way to claim every catalog game permanently. Sony describes its Game Catalog as a changing library: games are added regularly, and some have announced dates when they leave. Check each title in the catalog for your PlayStation Store region, along with any published departure date, before counting it as a reason to subscribe. Catalog contents can vary by region, tier, platform, and device. Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page lists current plan information; the US PS Plus Usage Terms describe access conditions.

For instructions on finding and accessing games, see Sony’s PlayStation Plus game access guide. Verify the title itself rather than relying on a catalog’s advertised size: a large library is of little help if it does not contain the games you want to play.

Compare the cost over your real play window
Compare what Extra would cost for the period you expect to subscribe with the separate price of the game or games you will actually play. Do not automatically compare a game against the full annual fee if you would subscribe for less time, or assume a single month will cover a longer play schedule. If you are considering multiple games, include only the ones you genuinely intend to play during that subscription period.

As a dated US reference, Sony’s PlayStation Plus page displayed Extra at $16.99 for one month, $43.99 for three months, and $134.99 for twelve months when checked on October 4, 2026. These are US prices shown on that date, not guaranteed future prices or prices for other regions. The page describes the subscription as continuing until canceled. | Choice | What to compare | Access trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Extra | The plan price for the period you expect to subscribe, weighed against the games you will play and the other benefits you value. | Catalog access depends on an active subscription and continued title availability. |
| Buy separately | The current price of the specific game and the value you place on returning to it later. | A digital Store purchase is licensed for use under Sony’s terms; it is not unrestricted, transferable ownership. |
Count the benefits you would otherwise use
Extra includes Essential benefits such as online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, and cloud storage, plus the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics, according to Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page. If you already want those benefits, they are part of the comparison; if you would not use them, do not treat them as savings or assign them an invented cash value. Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page

Consider how long you want access
Extra: access while membership and catalog conditions hold
Asked whether PlayStation Plus games are theirs to keep, Sony answers: “Yes, for as long as you remain an active subscriber.” That qualification matters: a downloaded catalog game remains subject to an active membership and the title’s availability in the service. If your membership lapses or a game leaves the catalog, you may lose access through Extra. Sony’s PlayStation Plus FAQ

Separate digital purchase: a license, not unrestricted ownership
A separately purchased digital game is not equivalent to owning a freely transferable copy. Sony’s US Terms of Service, published in March 2026, say Store buyers receive a personal license for private, non-commercial use and state: “This means you can use a product in the ways described in the license, but do not own the product.” The terms say the license is not transferable unless local law requires otherwise. Physical editions: check the exact game and console

Sony’s March 2026 US terms refer to a boxed game as an example of a physical item. Sony’s US Terms of Service
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know what happens to add-ons if access ends
Sony’s US PS Plus Usage Terms say that continued access to features and benefits requires an active subscription. They also warn that the number and availability of included games can change. If a catalog game leaves or your membership lapses, add-ons or similar consumables bought for that PlayStation Plus game may not be usable until you renew or buy the same game from the Store. Consider this before purchasing extras for a title you access through Extra. Sony’s US PS Plus Usage Terms

Check the US refund rules before buying or subscribing
For a digital game bought through the US PlayStation Store, Sony’s policy allows a cancellation and refund request within 14 days of purchase only if you have not started downloading or streaming it. Once download or streaming has begun, the purchase is generally not refundable unless the content is faulty. The policy also permits a subscription cancellation and refund request within 14 days of the initial transaction, with a pro-rata reduction for service already used. These are US policy terms; local law may provide additional rights, and rules differ by region. Sony’s US PlayStation Store cancellation policy

Use this decision check
- List your games. Look up each one in the current catalog for your Store region and note any announced departure date.
- Set your likely subscription period. Compare the applicable Extra price for that period with the separate price of the games you expect to play.
- Account for access needs. Decide whether you need to revisit a particular title beyond your subscription or its time in the catalog.
- Include relevant benefits. Consider online multiplayer, monthly games, discounts, cloud storage, and other included benefits only to the extent you would use or otherwise pay for them.
- Check the purchase route and terms. For a physical copy, confirm disc-drive compatibility and edition; for a digital copy or subscription, review the local Store terms and refund policy.
