Chrome Reading mode lets you change how reading text looks without changing the original webpage. On a computer, you can adjust the font, color theme, size, line height, and letter spacing. On Android, you can choose a font style, text size, and background. The available controls depend on your device.
Customize Reading mode on a computer
- Open a text webpage in Chrome and open Reading mode. You can right-click the page and select Open in reading mode, select Reading mode in the address bar if it appears, or go to More > More tools > Reading mode. Google also documents keyboard shortcuts: ⌘ + Option + r on macOS, or Alt + Shift + r on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS. See Google’s computer instructions.
- To change the text size, select Font size at the top right, then choose to decrease, increase, or reset the size.
- To change the font or colors, select Settings at the top right, then choose Font or Color theme.
- In the same Settings menu, adjust Line height or Letter spacing if needed.
These controls affect Reading mode text, not the original website or other Chrome content.

Customize Reading mode in the Side panel
- Open More > More tools > Reading mode.
- In the Side panel toolbar, choose Font, Font size, Color theme, Line height, or Letter spacing and select your preferred setting.
- To keep Reading mode readily available, select the panel’s pin control.
Side panel settings apply only to reading text in that panel; they do not restyle websites or change general Chrome content. Details are in Google’s Side panel instructions.

Customize Reading mode on Android
- Open a webpage in Chrome and tap More > Show Reading mode beside the address bar.
- Pull up the Reading mode sheet.
- Choose Sans Serif, Serif, or Mono for the font style.
- Scroll to set the font size, then choose a Light, Sepia, or Dark background.

Why Reading mode may not appear or show all the text
Reading mode is not supported reliably on every page. Google lists image galleries, interactive maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages, and login screens among page types where it may not work as expected. On Android, Chrome displays a message when Reading mode is unavailable for a page.
If Reading mode is missing or content does not appear on a computer, Google recommends updating Chrome. If text is still absent, highlight the relevant content on the original page to trigger Reading mode.
