Extra is better value if you will actually play games from its Game Catalog. Essential is better value if you mainly need online multiplayer and the monthly games. Both tiers include online multiplayer, so you don’t need Extra for that. What Extra adds is catalog access and Ubisoft+ Classics, and it costs $55 more per year at the US 12-month prices.
What each plan includes
PlayStation lists monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage, Share Play and exclusive content among Essential’s benefits. Extra includes all of those. In PlayStation’s words on its US PlayStation Plus games page: “Extra members can enjoy all game content from PlayStation Plus Essential, as well as download access to the Game Catalog, which features hundreds of games.”

Do you need Extra for online multiplayer?
No. PlayStation Support says most PS4 and PS5 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. That requirement is met by Essential just as it is by Extra. If online play is your only reason to subscribe, the extra money buys you nothing you need.

These are the prices shown on PlayStation’s US subscription page. Your region, account offers and any promotions may differ. The page states that subscriptions renew until canceled. The per-month and difference figures are my own arithmetic from those prices.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
| Billing period | Essential | Extra | Extra premium | Premium per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | $10.99 | $16.99 | $6.00 | $6.00 |
| 3 months | $27.99 | $43.99 | $16.00 | about $5.33 |
| 12 months | $79.99 | $134.99 | $55.00 | about $4.58 |
On the annual plans, Essential works out to about $6.67 a month and Extra to about $11.25. Paying yearly lowers the monthly gap, but it also commits you to more money up front.

There is no universal break-even point. The sources give no usage data, and the value of a game depends on what you would otherwise pay for it. Work through three checks:

- Check your local price. Look at the price for your region and the billing period you would actually choose. The gap in the table above is the figure to beat.
- Browse the Game Catalog. Count the games you would really play, such as ones you were about to buy or have been meaning to try. If their combined purchase price clearly exceeds the premium for the period you’d be subscribed, Extra pays for itself. If you can’t name any, it doesn’t.
- Ask whether Essential is enough. If online multiplayer and the monthly games cover your play, stay on Essential.
Catalog caveats that affect value
- It changes. PlayStation describes the catalog as having hundreds of games, with new titles added regularly. It gives no precise count. Availability varies over time and by plan, so a game you want today may not be there later.
- PS4 additions are slowing. PlayStation’s plan page says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026. That refers to future additions, not removal of PS4 games already in the catalog. If you mostly play PS4 titles, expect fewer new ones.
- Short-term use can work. Because the catalog is download access, you can subscribe to Extra for a month or a few months to play specific games, then drop back to Essential. This costs the monthly premium, so it suits a few targeted games better than an annual commitment.
Who should pick which
Essential suits you if
- You play online multiplayer and want the monthly games.
- You buy the specific games you want rather than sampling.
- You want the lowest recurring cost.
Extra suits you if
- You like trying many games without buying each one.
- Several catalog games match your backlog.
- You want Ubisoft+ Classics access included.
