In the U.S., Essential covers core PlayStation Plus benefits, Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics, and Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming. Choose based on the specific features and games you will use: a higher tier is not automatically better value.
What is the difference between Essential, Extra, and Premium?
| Plan | What it includes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Monthly games, online multiplayer for games that require it, cloud storage, Share Play, discounts, and other core benefits. | Players who want core membership features, especially multiplayer access for games that require Plus. |
| Extra | Essential benefits, plus the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Sony describes the Game Catalog as hundreds of games. | Players who expect to play games currently available in the catalog. |
| Premium | Lower-tier benefits, plus the Classics Catalog, game trials, and cloud streaming. Sony’s U.S. plan page also lists the Sony Pictures Catalog. | Players who want the added classics, trials, or supported streaming features. |
Benefits can differ by territory. See Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Plus plans and benefits for the current plan descriptions.

Do you need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer?
All three plans include online multiplayer, but a subscription is not required for every multiplayer game. PlayStation support says that “In order to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription.” Check the individual game’s PlayStation Store listing to confirm whether it requires Plus. Sony’s PlayStation Plus support page gives the current qualification.
How the game catalogs and monthly games work
Monthly games
Essential includes monthly games. Sony states that from January 2026, PS4 titles will be added less regularly to monthly game lineups. This does not mean PS4 games have stopped appearing. The monthly lineup changes, so check the current offer rather than assuming a particular title will remain available.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics
Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Sony describes the Game Catalog as hundreds of games, but catalog contents change over time; a particular game is not guaranteed to remain included. Premium also includes the lower-tier benefits. From January 2026, Sony says PS4 titles will be added less regularly to Game Catalog updates. See What’s new on PS Plus for current changes and Sony’s important notice for the PS4 update.
Classics, trials, and access after cancellation
Premium adds the Classics Catalog and game trials. Catalog access is tied to an active membership and to the content remaining available on the service; it is not the same as owning a game outright. Sony notes that DLC associated with a catalog game may become unusable if membership expires or that game leaves the service. Streaming does not support DLC or add-ons. Check Sony’s games and membership FAQ for current catalog and access details.

What Premium cloud streaming supports
Premium is the tier to consider if you want cloud streaming, but availability depends on the game, device, and territory. Sony’s U.S. FAQ describes streaming on PS4, PS5, and PC, as well as selected streaming to PS5 or PlayStation Portal; these options should not be assumed to apply worldwide. Sony lists a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p, on its current U.S. plan page. Those are Sony’s published minimums, not a guarantee of a particular streaming experience. Review the streaming details in Sony’s FAQ and the current plan page for supported devices and games in your region.
Cloud saves and sharing membership benefits
Sony’s U.S. support page lists 100 GB of cloud storage for PS5 and PS4 saves across the plans. A membership is tied to the subscriber’s account, but selected benefits can be shared on a primary PS4 or on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. See PlayStation Plus support for the current storage and sharing terms.

How to decide which plan is worth it
- Choose Essential if you mainly want monthly games, cloud saves, discounts, Share Play, or multiplayer for games that require Plus.
- Consider Extra if you plan to play games currently in the Game Catalog or want Ubisoft+ Classics.
- Consider Premium if its Classics Catalog, trials, or supported cloud streaming are features you will actually use.
- Check the exact games first. Catalog inclusion changes, so look up the titles you intend to play before paying for a higher tier.
- Compare the displayed price and term. A consistent current U.S. price comparison for all three plans is not established here. Sony directs customers to sign in to see available options, and the amount can vary by term, offer, account, and territory. Confirm the price and renewal frequency shown in the PlayStation Store before purchase.
Renewal, cancellation, and paying for membership
Sony’s U.S. information says subscriptions renew automatically until canceled; the purchase screen shows the price and renewal frequency. Review those details before confirming a subscription, and use Sony’s current membership information for account-specific options: PlayStation Plus membership information.
A PlayStation Store gift card is an optional way to add wallet funds; it is not required to subscribe and is region-restricted. Sony’s U.S. terms say wallet funds may be used to renew a subscription, and its support explains how to redeem a PlayStation Store voucher code. A PlayStation Plus subscription voucher is different: it specifies a plan and term and may convert existing membership time. See Sony’s U.S. guide to PlayStation Plus vouchers.
