In Republic Book V, Plato argues that women suited to the guardian role in his ideal city should receive the same education and share the same work as male guardians. That is a striking challenge to sex-based limits on civic training, but it is not a proposal for identical schooling for every girl, nor a modern claim that education is an individual right. Contemporary frameworks extend the question beyond admission to equal rights, resources, safety, learning and outcomes.
What did Plato think about girls’ education?
In Republic Book V, Socrates considers whether women should take part in the work of the city’s guardian class, which carries political and military responsibilities. His argument is that childbearing and begetting do not by themselves establish a relevant difference in the nature needed for guardianship. Women with the aptitudes for that role, he concludes, should receive the guardians’ education and share their pursuits. The same-education claim appears at 456d in the Perseus Digital Library translation.

“For the production of a guardian, then, education will not be one thing for our men and another for our women, especially since [456d] the nature which we hand over to it is the same.”

The scope matters: this is a proposal for capable women in the guardian class of Plato’s ideal city, not a plan for every girl in every society. And the argument is about preparing people to serve a just city, rather than grounding an individual legal right to education.

Inclusion with a stated limitation
The passage does not treat women as equal in every respect. It describes women as physically weaker than men and proposes lighter duties for them, even as it includes suitably capable women in guardian education and shared civic work. The text therefore combines an argument against excluding women from training solely because of sex with an assumption of comparative physical weakness.
How does the wider Platonic context affect the comparison?
The Laws also rejects separate education for men and women, according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy’s Summer 2026 entry on Plato’s ethics and politics. But scholars disagree about how that dialogue presents women’s capacities and political participation. Shared education is thus not confined to one line in the Republic, yet it should not be taken as evidence that Plato’s wider account of women matches modern egalitarian views.

How do modern views frame gender equality in education?
UNESCO defines gender equality in education this way: “Gender equality in education means that the right to education of all learners – girls and boys, women and men – is respected equally.” Its framework also concerns equal access to opportunities, resources and protections, as well as equal treatment and benefits. It considers participation, learning content and context, outcomes, and opportunities in life and work—not just whether a learner is admitted to school. See UNESCO’s gender equality in education overview.

What is the global situation concerning education and gender equality?
UNESCO and the UNESCO Institute for Statistics estimated that 273 million children and youth worldwide were out of school in 2024: 133 million girls and 140 million boys. These are global figures for that year, not a measure of conditions in every country or at every school level. UNESCO’s overview of gender equality in education notes that barriers vary with geography, income, disability, minority status, pregnancy, early marriage and gender-based violence.

Why is gender equality in education a priority?
UNESCO’s framework treats equality as more than access to a classroom: learners also need fair treatment, resources and protection, and the chance to learn and benefit from education. This broader lens differs from Plato’s role-focused question. His proposal asks which women should be trained for a specific civic responsibility; modern frameworks ask whether learners of all genders can participate and benefit on equal terms across education and its wider effects.
