First find out where the game keeps each kind of progress: on your device, in a platform cloud service, or on the publisher’s servers. Back up the files and cloud saves you can access, verify the copy is current, and follow the game’s official shutdown notice for any export, migration, or offline-play option. A platform save backup may not include server-side characters, inventory, achievements, or purchases.
Start by identifying what you need to preserve
Write down the exact game, platform, and mode you use—such as a downloaded PC game, a streamed PlayStation game, or a console version. Then check the game’s official support page and shutdown announcement for instructions about account progression, cross-progression, save exports, offline play, and deadlines.

Different kinds of progress can have different storage and transfer rules. A local or platform save does not necessarily contain a game account’s server-side state. For example, Zen Studios’ end-of-support terms distinguish server-stored progression and inventory from locally stored content; that is a title-specific example, not a universal rule. See Zen Studios’ terms and conditions.

- Platform cloud save: A copy managed by Steam, Nintendo, or another platform. Availability and compatibility depend on the game.
- Server-side progress: Data controlled by the game operator. A platform’s save-backup feature may not capture it; only the game operator can confirm whether it can be exported or migrated.

Check Steam Cloud and let syncing finish
Steam Cloud is configurable by game, so do not assume every Steam title syncs saves. Check the game’s Steam store page for its Steam Cloud indicator and confirm synchronization has completed. Steam lists common Cloud file locations as C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata on macOS, and ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata on Linux. These are not guaranteed locations for every game’s saves; developers may use other folders. Consult Steam’s Cloud guidance and the game’s own save-location instructions.

If Steam reports a conflict between local and cloud saves, compare their timestamps and choose the version that reflects your latest play. Do not assume Steam Support can restore a lost save: Steam says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts.
Copy the save files, not just the installed game
Steam’s Backup feature is for game installation files and may not include saved games. Valve says backups for Valve-created games do not include saves; third-party games may store them in locations chosen by their developers. If the game provides an official save-location guide or export tool, follow it. Otherwise, copy the identified save files to a separate folder or removable drive, leaving the originals untouched. Steam’s Backup Feature guidance explains the installation-backup limitation.

Nintendo Switch: confirm cloud compatibility; treat console transfer as a move
Nintendo Save Data Cloud supports only compatible Switch 2 and Switch software and requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check compatibility for the specific title and inspect its backup status or timestamp. Nintendo notes that unsupported software may show: “This software doesn’t support Save Data Cloud backup”. See Nintendo’s backup instructions.
A nearby-console save transfer is not a second copy. Nintendo requires both consoles to be online and the same Nintendo Account to be linked to the relevant user on each console. It warns: “This does not create a copy of your save data. Once sent, the save data file will be deleted from the source system.” A transfer can also overwrite target save data, which cannot be undone. Use it only when you intend to move the save, not archive it. Details are in Nintendo’s nearby-console transfer instructions.

PlayStation: account for streamed versus downloaded games
Sony describes streamed PlayStation Plus game saves as stored on PlayStation, while saves for downloaded games are stored on the PS5 or PS4 console. Saved data does not automatically transfer between streamed and downloaded versions. Sony says PlayStation Plus cloud storage can be used to upload and download saves between those game types. This describes platform save handling; it does not establish that the game’s server-side progression can be exported. Follow Sony’s save and transfer guidance for the relevant game type.

Look for an explicit save-download, account-migration, local-conversion, offline-patch, or server-world export process. Note the deadline and what each downloadable snapshot contains; a shutdown does not automatically create an export, and snapshots may differ in completeness.

PixARK illustrates why timing matters. Snail Games announced that its retired server saves would be downloadable for a limited period: the listed server shutdown date was August 24, 2026, and the download service was to remain available until September 24, 2026 (Beijing Time, UTC+8). The announcement described an August 3 snapshot and an August 24 final snapshot. Those dates apply to that announced transition, not to other games. Check the game’s current official notice and preserve any downloaded archive in more than one place. See the PixARK announcement.

Check the backup before the shutdown
- Confirm what it contains. Identify whether the copy is a local save, a platform cloud save, or an official server-world export. Do not treat one as proof that the others are included.
- Check its date. Compare the local file’s timestamp or the platform’s backup status with your most recent play session. Resolve any sync conflict before relying on the cloud copy.
- Keep the original safe. When copying PC files, leave the source untouched and place the copy in a separate folder or removable drive. For an official archive, retain the downloaded original rather than editing it.
- Verify the game’s instructions. Confirm supported versions, destination platform, import steps, and deadline in the game operator’s notice. Do not assume a save can move across platforms or become playable offline without explicit support.
