Plasma Shell Crash Loop After `nala full-upgrade`: What the Report Does—and Doesn’t—Tell Us

The accessible post does not reveal its successful fix or identify the distribution and Plasma version. Here is what the report establishes, plus Debian Plasma 6 service and widget diagnostics for similar crashes.

The exact fix behind the report “This article worked!” cannot be confirmed: the accessible post shows its title and author, but not the linked article’s contents. The post also does not identify the Linux distribution or Plasma version. That means there is no evidence-based way to name the successful remedy or claim that nala full-upgrade caused the crash. If you are troubleshooting a similar loop, use the version-appropriate service logs to investigate first; the Debian Plasma 6 steps below are specific to that setup, not universal instructions.

What is known about the reported crash

The post describes a loop after the author ran sudo nala full-upgrade and rebooted. It says trying the old kernel, cleaning the cache, reinstalling Plasma Shell, and reinstalling widgets did not help. Its title says a linked article worked, but the accessible page does not reveal that article’s contents. The author’s distribution, Plasma version, exact diagnosis, and eventual fix are therefore unknown.

This is an individual report, not evidence that Nala generally causes Plasma Shell crashes. Debian’s Nala manual explains that full-upgrade can install new packages and remove packages when necessary, as can the analogous APT full-upgrade mode. That describes what the command may do; it does not connect it to this incident. Debian Nala manual

For Plasma 6 on Debian: check the user service and logs

Debian’s Plasma 6 troubleshooting guidance suggests checking the Plasma Shell user service, restarting it if needed, and examining its journal. These commands gather diagnostic information and attempt a service restart; they are not a guaranteed repair. Confirm that you are using Plasma 6 on Debian before applying this distribution-specific guidance.

Investigate widgets without deleting them wholesale

KDE’s debugging guidance recommends checking widgets individually. A widget is a diagnostic possibility, not an established cause of the reported crash. If the journal points to one, or disabling it reliably changes the behavior, isolate that widget rather than removing every widget or resetting the entire desktop configuration.

Before editing user configuration or moving widget files, make a backup. Change one suspected item at a time and check whether the crash recurs; this preserves a way to undo the test and makes the result easier to interpret. KDE’s Plasma debugging guidance explains widget investigation and these locations.

What the failed attempts do—and don’t—establish

The title reports that booting an old kernel, cleaning the cache, reinstalling Plasma Shell, and reinstalling widgets did not resolve that person’s problem. Those attempts do not identify the cause, and the post does not provide enough detail to judge whether each was performed in the same environment or with the same package state as another reader’s system.

For a separate incident, capture the service status and journal before making more broad changes. If the commands above do not apply to your distribution or Plasma version, use that system’s documentation for the corresponding user service and log tools rather than assuming Debian’s service name is universal.
