To join a teacher’s live Gimkit game, students usually do not need to log in: open gimkit.com/join and enter the game code, or use the host’s QR code or join link. Signing in is for account features; educators need an account to create kits and host games.
Joining a game is different from logging in
Choose the route that matches what you want to do:
| Goal | Sign-in needed? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Join a teacher’s live game | Usually not for students | Open gimkit.com/join and enter the code, scan the host’s QR code, or open the join link. Gimkit’s joining instructions explain these options. |
| Use student account features such as Classes, XP, or cosmetics | Yes | Sign in to the student’s account. Gimkit’s Account FAQ describes account features and notes that students can play live games and assignments without an account. |
| Create kits or host games as an educator | Yes | Create or use an educator account, then sign in. See Gimkit’s account-creation guide. |
How to join a Gimkit game with a code
- On a phone, tablet, or computer, open gimkit.com/join.
- Enter the game code shown by the host.
- Enter a name, or approve the nickname if the host is using Gimkit’s Nickname Generator.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to enter the game.
The host can also display a QR code or share a direct join link. A QR code appears when the host hovers over the game code; scanning it avoids typing the code. A direct link can bypass manual code entry. Gimkit’s QR code instructions cover that option. If the teacher uses Classes and you are signed in, Gimkit says you may be able to join automatically.

How to sign in to a Gimkit account
If you already have an account, use the sign-in method associated with it. Gimkit’s account-creation guide describes creating an account with Google or email; it does not establish that every account or device has an identical sign-in flow. A student does not need to create an account just to join a live game.

What to do if you forgot your Gimkit password
- Go to the Gimkit login page and enter the email address for the account.
- Select Forgot Password and submit the request.
- Look for the password-reset link in that email account’s inbox, then follow it to set a new password.
If the message does not arrive, check the spam folder. Gimkit’s password-reset guide, updated May 19, 2026, also notes that school network settings may interfere. School email filtering can block account messages, so ask school IT to allow relevant Gimkit sender domains. If needed, contact Gimkit support from the email address on the account.
Why a school Google login might not work
One documented issue affects some school-managed Google accounts belonging to students under 18 who use Google single sign-on (SSO). Google Workspace for Education controls may block the sign-in until a Workspace administrator marks Gimkit as trusted. Students should ask their teacher or school IT administrator for help rather than changing administrator settings themselves.

Gimkit’s guidance on this issue was updated October 18, 2023. Its administrator menu path may have changed, so school IT should check the current Google Workspace controls. If Google SSO is unavailable, Gimkit says email-and-password sign-in may be an alternative; the account may first need a password set through Forgot Password. Students can still join games without signing in. See Gimkit’s Google Workspace guidance and its Account FAQ.

A failed game connection does not necessarily mean your password is wrong. Gimkit recommends checking its service status and running its compatibility test. Its troubleshooting article, updated August 14, 2024, says school firewalls or proxy settings may block secure WebSocket connections or access to *.gimkitconnect.com, which Gimkit uses for game servers. Ask the school’s IT department to check the network if the problem occurs at school. See Gimkit’s game-server troubleshooting guide.
