Before moving a law firm to new practice management software, plan the work around five connected tasks: assign an internal owner, define what data will move, settle configuration and integration responsibilities, prepare staff for their workflows, and agree on go-live checks and support. Treat the rollout as an operational change project—not just a software installation.
Why implementation planning matters
Legal management software touches matter records, documents, everyday workflows, connected systems, and the people who use them. A rushed or poorly scoped transition can leave gaps in migrated information, unfinished setup, or users unsure how to complete routine work. Centerbase’s 2024 buyer guide calls a smooth implementation critical to user acceptance; that is vendor-authored buyer guidance, not a measured industry result.

The available vendor materials support a practical planning framework, not a universal legal or technical checklist. Requirements and responsibilities can differ by jurisdiction, firm, and platform, so make the vendor spell out what applies to your proposed rollout.
Build the plan around five workstreams
1. Set goals, ownership, and milestones
Define which business problems the change is meant to address and which workflows are in scope. Name an internal project lead who can coordinate with the vendor, gather decisions, and escalate blockers. Agree on milestones, decision owners, a timetable, and an escalation route before work begins. Centerbase recommends appointing a project manager and setting a timetable; a Wolters Kluwer whitepaper also emphasizes identifying needs and goals before technical implementation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Define and validate the migration
Inventory the matter data, documents, and history the firm needs, then ask exactly what the vendor will migrate and what it will not. Establish how the firm will review the converted material and who must sign off before the live transition. Where the platform supports it, request a sample or trial conversion and use it to check that records and documents arrive as expected. LEAP’s Australian onboarding description presents a trial transition, review and validation, and then a live transition; Centerbase advises buyers to ask about migration handling and safeguards against loss or corruption.
3. Confirm configuration and integrations
List the users, permissions, rates, workflows, precedents, accounting tools, and add-ons the firm needs. Confirm which setup tasks the vendor will perform, which are the firm’s responsibility, and whether any integration work falls outside the proposed scope. LEAP describes configuration and integration setup as onboarding stages, while LawVu describes configuring its system around a team’s systems and business.

4. Prepare staff for their actual work
Plan training by role and have users practise the workflows they will rely on, rather than limiting preparation to a general product tour. Agree how the firm will communicate the change, where users can find continuing learning resources, and who will answer questions. LEAP describes role-based sessions, on-demand modules, and practice with day-to-day scenarios. Wolters Kluwer advises adapting training to user needs, and LawVu describes change management, training, and communication as part of its implementation approach.

5. Define readiness checks and post-launch support
Before go-live, decide how the firm will check migrated data, precedents, and integrations, and who can approve readiness. Establish who handles troubleshooting during cutover and how users will get help after launch. LEAP describes final checks and dedicated go-live support; LawVu describes success planning and ongoing customer-success support. Include responsibility for follow-up improvements in the plan rather than assuming every workflow will be settled at launch.

Compare vendors on the same implementation scenario
Ask each prospective vendor to respond to the same firm-specific scenario, then record the answer, the responsible party, and any assumptions or exclusions. Centerbase’s 2024 guide urges buyers to clarify timetable, support, training, integration, migration, and migration safeguards. LawVu says implementation timing varies with scope, team size, plan, and availability of key participants; the reviewed materials do not establish a typical duration that can be applied across firms.
- Who is the project lead on the vendor’s side and on the firm’s side, and what milestones are included?
- Which data, documents, and history will move, and how can the firm test and validate the result?
- Which configuration tasks and integrations are included, and which require additional work?
- What role-based training and self-service learning resources are available?
- What help is available during cutover and after go-live, and what response expectations apply?
- What assumptions, exclusions, delays, or extra work could change the plan?
Sources and scope
The planning points above draw on vendor materials: LEAP’s UK implementation page and Australian onboarding page, LawVu’s implementation page, Centerbase’s 2024 buyer guide, and a Wolters Kluwer implementation whitepaper. These sources describe vendor approaches and buyer guidance; they do not demonstrate that one provider is superior or quantify industry-wide adoption outcomes.
