PLA filament can turn brittle after moisture exposure or as it ages, but snapping by itself does not prove the spool is wet. First look for moisture-related print symptoms, then check whether the spool, filament path, or a damaged section is putting the filament under mechanical stress. Dry it only according to the filament maker’s instructions, and store it sealed with desiccant afterward.
Why PLA filament becomes brittle
Moisture is one possible cause: damp PLA may become brittle and can print poorly. But brittleness alone is not a reliable moisture test. PLA is generally less affected by humidity than more hygroscopic printing materials, yet it can still encounter moisture-related problems in some storage and printing workflows. Over time, PLA can also lose toughness; Dow notes that moisture can accelerate performance loss during storage and shipping, but that does not mean drying will restore every brittle spool.

Filament can also snap because it is being pulled too hard or forced through a poor feed path. Phrozen identifies brittleness and tension as common causes of breakage. A tangle, misaligned path, spool that does not turn freely, or locally damaged filament can create stress even when moisture is not the issue.

How to tell whether moisture may be involved
Look for a cluster of symptoms during printing rather than relying on a single clue. Wet-filament indicators reported by Polymaker and Prusa include:

- Popping or hissing as filament melts; visible bubbling may also occur.
- More stringing, oozing, or blobs than usual.
- Rough or inconsistent surface finish.
- Inconsistent extrusion or weak layer adhesion.
- Smoke in cases of high moisture, as described by Prusa.
These symptoms are reasons to investigate moisture, not a definitive test: print settings and other faults can also affect print quality. If the filament snaps before it reaches the hot end, inspect the mechanical feed path as well.
Check the filament path before drying
- Make sure the spool turns freely. Check that it is not catching on its holder or another part of the printer.
- Follow the filament from spool to extruder. Confirm the route is aligned and does not pull sharply or rub against an obstruction.
- Look for tangles. Carefully unwind and clear any crossed turns that could tighten as the spool feeds.
- Remove damaged filament. Cut away brittle, kinked, or visibly damaged sections before loading a fresh length.
If snapping stops after correcting a tangle or feed restriction, drying was not the fix needed for that failure.

Dry PLA only to its maker’s instructions
Drying recommendations are not universal. Phrozen’s general guidance suggests 40–50°C for a few hours, while Prusa specifies 45°C for six hours for Prusament PLA/rPLA. Those are different manufacturer recommendations for their stated contexts, not interchangeable settings for every PLA spool. Check the instructions for your exact filament and spool before applying heat.

Polymaker distinguishes an active dryer, which uses heat and airflow to remove moisture, from a dry box used to store filament. A dry box may help keep a spool dry, but it is not necessarily a substitute for active drying when moisture is suspected.
Keep dried filament dry
After drying, put the spool in an airtight bag or closed dry box with desiccant. This helps limit further moisture exposure during storage. Storage prevents reabsorption; it does not repair a mechanical feed problem or guarantee that age-related loss of toughness can be reversed.

If the filament still snaps
If brittleness persists after following the maker’s drying instructions and reducing feed stress, try a short section of filament or compare the result with a fresh spool. The available guidance does not establish a universal method for restoring filament degraded by age or another cause. Drying may help when moisture is responsible, but it is not a guaranteed repair.
