Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMost Pixelmon server failures come from one of four mismatches: the Minecraft release, Pixelmon release, mod loader, or Java runtime. A client can also be rejected when its installed Pixelmon version differs from the server, while a server that starts but lags usually needs log-based diagnosis rather than a blind RAM increase.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Use this order: identify the exact software stack, correct Java and loader compatibility, make the client and server mod sets identical, verify that Pixelmon actually loaded, then investigate memory, networking, and side-mod errors. The version matrix and Java requirements below are those documented by the Pixelmon Wiki server guide.

| What you see | Most likely area | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The server closes immediately or never reaches a running state | Java, loader, server pack, or a missing dependency | Read the first explicit error in the startup console and verify the Java executable and loader. |
| Pixelmon is absent from the server’s mods list | Installation or launch-path problem | Confirm that the Pixelmon server pack is installed in the directory being launched and that you are not starting a vanilla jar. |
| You reach the server but receive “Mod Rejection” | Client/server version or mod-set mismatch | Compare Minecraft, Pixelmon, loader, and required sidemod versions character for character. |
| The server starts but has severe lag or crashes under load | Insufficient resources, a faulty sidemod, or a recurring server error | Check the console and latest log while the problem occurs; use 3 GB as the documented starting allocation, not as a universal answer. |
| Local players can join but friends outside the home network cannot | Network reachability or hosting limitations | Determine whether the server is bound to the local network and whether remote access has been configured. |
Do not apply a fix from another Pixelmon branch. Java 21 cannot be substituted into an older branch simply because it is newer, and extra memory cannot repair an incorrect loader or missing mod.
Verify the complete version stack
Write down every component before changing anything: Minecraft version, Pixelmon version, loader, Java version, launcher or server start script, and every sidemod or plugin. Pixelmon’s requirements are branch-specific.

| Minecraft | Pixelmon releases documented for that branch | Loader | Java requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.21.1 | 9.3.0–9.3.13 | NeoForge | Java 21 |
| 1.20.2 | 9.2.4–9.2.10 | Forge | Java 17 |
| 1.20.1 | 9.2.0–9.2.3 | Forge | Java 17 |
| 1.16.5 | 9.1.12 | Forge | 64-bit Java 8 |
Pixelmon 9.3.0 and later uses NeoForge. The 9.2.x branches listed above use Forge, as does the documented 1.16.5 release. The official guide warns that Java 8 is required before Pixelmon 9.2.0, Java 17 is required for 9.2.0 through 9.2.10, and Java 21 is required for 9.3.0 or newer; earlier or later Java releases will not work for those documented branches.
Check which Java the server really invokes
Having a suitable Java installation on the computer is not enough. A start script can call a different executable from the one you tested. In a terminal, run java -version, then inspect the startup output for the Java version and path used by the server. On Windows, where java shows candidate executables; on macOS or Linux, which java does the same. If the script contains an absolute path, test that exact executable, for example "/path/to/java" -version, and update the script to the intended 64-bit runtime.

After the change, start it again and confirm the console reports the expected major version. A Java 17 server for a 9.3.x installation, or Java 21 for a 9.1.12 installation, is still a compatibility error even if the process opens.
Use the matching loader installation
Install the loader required by the selected branch and launch the generated modded server file, not a vanilla Minecraft server jar. For 1.21.1 with Pixelmon 9.3.x, that means NeoForge. For the listed 1.20.x and 1.16.5 branches, it means Forge. If a control panel or script offers several jars, check its selected server jar instead of assuming the newest file is active.

Make the client and server identical
Every player connecting to a server must use the same Pixelmon version as that server. The Pixelmon Wiki states that a differing version produces a “Mod Rejection” error and prevents the connection. Match the Minecraft release and loader as well; a correct Pixelmon number on the wrong Minecraft branch is not compatible.
What to compare
- Minecraft Java Edition release.
- Pixelmon release, including the full patch number.
- Forge or NeoForge, as required by the branch.
- Pixelmon sidemods and any other mods installed on the server.
- Configuration files when a mod requires synchronized settings.
Compare the version shown in the client’s mods screen with the server console or server mods directory. Remove an old Pixelmon jar rather than leaving two releases in the same folder; duplicate or stale jars can create a different failure from a straightforward rejection.

Confirm the edition
Pixelmon is a Forge- or NeoForge-based Java Edition mod. Bedrock Edition, console editions, and other editions cannot run this server mod. If a player is using a Bedrock or console client, changing RAM or reinstalling the Java server will not make that client compatible; the player needs the Java Edition setup required by the same branch.
Check whether Pixelmon actually loaded
If Pixelmon does not appear in the server’s mods list, treat that as an installation failure. Do not proceed to port forwarding or performance tuning until the mod is visible and the startup log shows it being discovered.

- Stop the server completely. Wait for the process to exit and make a backup of the world and configuration files.
- Open the directory used by the launch command. A frequent mistake is placing files in one server folder while the script starts another folder.
- Inspect the mods directory. Confirm that the Pixelmon jar and the required loader files belong to the same Minecraft branch. Remove duplicate or obsolete jars.
- Verify the server pack. If you installed a packaged server, repair or reinstall that pack rather than copying only the client mod into a vanilla server.
- Check the selected jar or panel profile. Ensure the command starts Forge or NeoForge, not a vanilla jar or an old profile left over from a previous installation.
- Start once and read the console. Look for Pixelmon being loaded and for explicit messages such as “requires,” “missing,” or “wrong version.”
A server that launches without Pixelmon can still create a normal-looking Minecraft world, which makes this check important. Stop it before inviting players, because a world created under the wrong mod set may need a backup restore when you correct the installation.
Allocate memory sensibly
The Pixelmon server documentation recommends starting with at least 3 GB of memory. Treat that as a baseline, not a guarantee: the appropriate allocation depends on player count, world size, view distance, and the installed mods or plugins.
When more memory may help
- The server reaches a running state but repeatedly reports out-of-memory errors.
- Garbage-collection pauses coincide with players exploring or generating new terrain.
- The player count or mod/plugin load has grown beyond the original setup.
When more memory will not help
- The server uses the wrong Java major version.
- The wrong Forge or NeoForge loader is being launched.
- Pixelmon is missing from the mods list.
- The client is rejected for a version mismatch.
- A sidemod throws a recurring exception or has an incompatible dependency.
Increase the allocation in small steps and observe the console after each change. Do not assign nearly all system RAM to Minecraft: the operating system, Java process, and any panel or backup service also need headroom. Record the previous value so you can reverse an unsuccessful change.
Read the first meaningful error in the logs
The final shutdown trace is often a consequence, not the cause. Start the server with the console visible and identify the first recurring exception or explicit compatibility line. Pixelmon’s performance guidance points to the server console when a recurring error appears as ticks per second (TPS) decline. For a support report, include the complete relevant log rather than a cropped final line.

Files to collect
- The current server console output from startup through failure.
- The latest
latest.logfile. - The dated compressed log if the incident occurred before the latest restart.
- A crash report, if one was generated.
- The exact Minecraft, Pixelmon, loader, Java, and sidemod versions.
Remove passwords, access tokens, IP addresses you do not want to publish, and other private data before sharing a log. Do not delete the first error while cleaning it up; support needs the surrounding lines and the stack trace that identifies the offending mod.
Useful error wording
- “Requires” or “missing dependency”: install the named dependency for the exact branch, or remove the mod that requires it.
- “Wrong version”: return to the version matrix and correct Minecraft, Pixelmon, loader, or Java.
- “Mod Rejection”: compare the connecting client’s complete mod set with the server.
- Pixelmon absent: repair the installation or launch path before changing gameplay settings.
- Repeated tick or TPS errors: capture the console while the slowdown occurs and test sidemods one at a time.
Repair a broken installation without losing the world
A clean repair is safer than repeatedly overwriting a live directory. Keep the world and configuration backup separate from the repaired server so you can roll back.
- Stop the server and copy the world folder, configuration folder, player data, and any custom scripts to a dated backup location.
- Record the exact stack that worked previously, if known, including Java and loader versions.
- Create a fresh server directory for the selected Minecraft and Pixelmon branch.
- Install the matching Forge or NeoForge server files and the correct Pixelmon server pack.
- Start the fresh directory once, accept the required license file if prompted, and stop it cleanly.
- Compare the generated directory with the old one. Move only verified configuration files and sidemods; do not copy an unknown collection of old jars.
- Start again and verify that Pixelmon appears in the mods list before restoring the world.
- Restore the backed-up world, start the server, and test with one matching client before allowing other players in.
If the fresh directory works but the old one does not, add sidemods and custom settings back in small groups until the failing component is identified. Preserve the working copy during this process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix connection and local-network problems
A server can be healthy locally and still unreachable from the internet. Local hosting generally serves players on the same local network; it does not automatically provide a public endpoint for friends elsewhere.
Best Value
Separate software failure from reachability
- Join from the host computer or another device on the same network. If that fails, return to the loader, mod, and log checks.
- Test a second local device with the server’s local address. This confirms whether the server is listening on the expected interface.
- If local joining works but remote joining fails, investigate firewall rules, router forwarding, the address being shared, and whether the internet connection permits inbound connections.
- Re-test after every network change, while keeping the client and server mod sets unchanged.
Do not expose a server publicly until you have backups, account security, and an update plan. A hosting move can solve remote-access and capacity constraints, but it does not remove Java, loader, Pixelmon, or sidemod mismatches.
When managed hosting is reasonable
The Pixelmon server guide strongly recommends paid hosting for bigger servers because of performance, stability, and safety. Consider it when the home connection cannot reliably accept remote players, the machine lacks capacity, or you need operational help with backups and uptime. Before committing, verify the provider’s supported Pixelmon branch, Java and loader options, mod installation method, backup policy, player limits, storage, and recurring price. A host that supports only a different branch will reproduce the same compatibility problem on a faster machine.
Handle the documented Turkish-language registry error
The Pixelmon guide documents a special Forge issue on systems using Turkish as the system language. A player may see “Fatally missing registry entries,” and some server-side functions may not work correctly. The documented workaround is to change the system language to English, then restart the affected server and client and test again. Apply this only after recording the original locale so you can restore it if the workaround does not address the problem.
Update Pixelmon safely
Pixelmon does not automatically update an existing installation. Treat an update as a controlled migration, not as replacing one jar while the server is running.
- Read the target branch’s Minecraft, loader, and Java requirements.
- Back up the world, configurations, player data, and current server directory.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Install the target loader and Pixelmon release in a test or copied directory.
- Start it and confirm that it remains running and that Pixelmon appears in the mods list.
- Join with a client using the same Minecraft, loader, Pixelmon, and sidemod versions.
- Test a Pixelmon feature, movement, saving, and a return visit before inviting the rest of the community.
- Keep the old installation intact until the new one has passed those checks.
Do not update only the client. A client on a newer Pixelmon release will be rejected by an older server, and the reverse is also true.
Choose the remedy that matches the failure
| Constraint | Appropriate remedy | What it cannot fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong Java or loader | Install the branch-required Java release and launch Forge or NeoForge as specified. | It will not correct a client mod mismatch or a damaged world. |
| Pixelmon missing from mods | Repair the server pack, mods directory, and launch path. | It will not solve a firewall or router problem. |
| Mod Rejection | Make the client’s Minecraft, Pixelmon, loader, and sidemods identical to the server. | It will not improve TPS caused by a separate performance issue. |
| Low TPS or memory pressure | Read the console during the slowdown, remove faulty sidemods, and adjust memory from the 3 GB starting point according to load. | It will not make an unsupported Java/loader combination compatible. |
| Remote players cannot connect | Configure network access or move to suitable managed hosting. | It will not bypass version requirements. |
Final pre-launch checklist
- The Minecraft and Pixelmon versions appear together in the supported matrix.
- The loader matches the branch: NeoForge for 9.3.0 and later, Forge for the documented older branches.
- The Java executable used by the start script is the required 64-bit release.
- Pixelmon appears in the server’s mods list and startup output.
- The server has at least 3 GB allocated as a starting point, with additional capacity evaluated against actual players and mods.
- Every client uses Java Edition and the identical Minecraft, Pixelmon, loader, and sidemod set.
- The latest log and console are available if a failure returns.
- A tested backup exists before updates, configuration changes, or world migrations.
- Remote access has been tested separately from local joining.
If the server still fails after this checklist, send support the exact stack details and the unedited relevant console and log files. The first explicit “requires,” “missing,” “wrong version,” or “mod rejection” line is usually more valuable than the final shutdown message.
