On the evidence available, the Google Pixel Watch 5 has the edge for plotting routes through dense urban areas—but that is a conditional result, not proof that it has more accurate GPS in every situation. Google reports that its July 2026 internal comparison favored the Pixel Watch 5 over the Garmin fēnix 8 Pro in challenging urban conditions. A small independent test in London’s Canary Wharf also found the Pixel’s route line closer to the runners’ actual path on two short outings. Neither result settles how the watches compare across other terrain, activities, GPS modes, or software versions.
Which watch has more accurate GPS?
For route plotting in the tested urban conditions, the evidence leans toward the Pixel Watch 5. Google’s own comparison favored it, and TechRadar reviewer Michael Sawh reported that its track stayed closest to the route on two short runs around Canary Wharf’s tall buildings. The independent test is a useful real-world check, but two outings are not enough to establish a general winner.

That distinction matters: a watch can draw a route line close to the path without being proven more accurate for every GPS-related measure. Route deviation, total distance error, repeatability, and pace stability are separate outcomes. Sawh noted pacing fluctuations across all three watches in his test, including the Pixel Watch 5.

What the head-to-head evidence shows
Google’s internal comparison
Google says the Pixel Watch 5 outperformed the Garmin fēnix 8 Pro and Apple Watch Ultra 3 for route-map accuracy in challenging urban settings. The company says its comparison used pre-production Pixel Watch 5 devices in July 2026 during outdoor running, walking, and biking sessions lasting no more than three hours, with good network conditions. This is a manufacturer-reported result, not an independent benchmark. Google’s engineering account describes the result and its conditions.

TechRadar’s field test
In a comparison published on 29 August 2026, TechRadar’s Michael Sawh took the watches on two short outings in London’s Canary Wharf area, including a section near tall buildings, and swapped wrists between runs. He reported that the Pixel Watch 5 remained closest to the actual route in the difficult section, while the Garmin and Apple tracks wandered at points. The fēnix 8 Pro also recorded a longer distance on the first run. Sawh cautioned that two short runs did not prove the Pixel definitively more accurate. Read TechRadar’s account of the test.
GPS hardware: similar capabilities, not a verdict
Both watches support advanced satellite positioning, but their specification labels do not tell you which one will produce a more accurate track in a particular setting.

| Watch | GPS specification | Constellations listed |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel Watch 5 | Dual-frequency GPS | US version: GPS, Galileo, GLONASS. Rest-of-world version: GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou, QZSS. |
| Garmin fēnix 8 Pro | Multi-band GPS | Not stated on the cited comparison page. |
These details come from Google’s Pixel Watch 5 specifications and Garmin’s fēnix comparison page. Dual-frequency and multi-band describe positioning capabilities; neither label alone is a measured accuracy score. Performance also depends on conditions such as buildings that reflect satellite signals, the selected GPS mode, and how the device processes its location data.

How Google says the Pixel Watch 5 corrects urban GPS errors
Google describes a system that combines GPS reference-station information with 3D building models to address satellite and atmospheric discrepancies and urban signal reflections. It says the watch compresses raw GPS data, sends it for external processing, and receives corrected results through the Google Health app back end. Those are Google’s descriptions of its engineering approach; the available evidence does not independently measure how much each element improves a route or establish how the system behaves under all network conditions. Google’s engineering article explains the approach.

What to look for in a meaningful GPS comparison
When judging route accuracy, look beyond the number of supported satellite systems or a single route screenshot. A useful comparison should specify what was measured and where the test took place.
- Route-line deviation: How closely the recorded path follows a known route, particularly near tall buildings or under tree cover.
- Distance error: How the recorded total compares with a measured reference. A watch that draws a plausible line can still report a different distance.
- Repeatability: Whether results hold across repeated runs, different routes, and multiple units rather than a single outing.
- GPS mode and battery use: Which positioning mode was selected and what battery cost accompanied it.
- Network dependence: Whether the method requires connectivity or remote processing, and what happens when that connection is limited.
- Pace stability: Whether pace readings fluctuate. This is worth checking separately from route-line accuracy.
The reported head-to-head evidence centers on difficult urban routes; it does not provide a broad, ground-truth comparison across environments, modes, and repeated trials.

Which one should you choose for GPS?
If your main concern is keeping a route line close to your path among city buildings, the Pixel Watch 5 is the more promising choice on the evidence available. Google’s urban comparison and the small independent Canary Wharf test both point in its favor, with important limits on how widely those results apply.

The published comparisons do not settle performance across open terrain, tree cover, GPS modes, network conditions, or repeated measured trials. Compare results from the environments and activities that matter to you, and treat hardware labels as specifications rather than proof of real-world superiority.
