For first-time Pixel Watch buyers and people upgrading from much older models, the Pixel Watch 5 looks like a capable Android smartwatch; for Pixel Watch 4 owners, the higher price and modest changes make upgrading difficult to justify. In her August 19, 2026 review, CNET reviewer Vanessa Hand Orellana praised its familiar design and Android integration but found practical battery life short and some advertised features unfinished during testing. Her findings reflect a week of personal use, not an independent laboratory assessment.
What does the Pixel Watch 5 cost, and which version is covered?
Orellana reported a $400 starting price for the 41mm Wi-Fi model, $50 more than the prior generation. She also listed a $580 Stephen Curry Special Edition in 45mm with cellular connectivity. The watch is offered in 41mm and 45mm sizes, with Wi-Fi and cellular configurations; those reported prices and configurations are publication-time details, so check current availability and pricing before buying.

The reviewer’s direct battery and tracking observations were made with the 41mm watch. Her review compares the Watch 5 with the Pixel Watch 4, but does not provide a controlled comparison against every competing smartwatch.

If you already own a Pixel Watch 4
The case for replacing a Watch 4 is weak on the evidence in this review. The Watch 5 costs more, while the reviewer describes the predecessor as a strong competitor. Her conclusion is that the price increase is hard to justify for current Watch 4 owners.

If you are buying your first Pixel Watch or upgrading from an older model
The Watch 5 is more compelling if you do not already have a recent Pixel Watch. Orellana recommends it to first-time buyers and people moving from much older models, particularly those who want Wear OS and Google services on their wrist. The value still depends on whether the size, connectivity option, and everyday battery trade-offs suit you.
How long does the battery last, and how quickly does it charge?
In Orellana’s 41mm test, the watch lasted about 24–28 hours with always-on display enabled, one night of sleep tracking, and a 30-minute outdoor GPS run. She reported a full charge in under 45 minutes. These are her observations under that described use, not a guarantee for every wearer.
Google’s estimate cited in the review was 30 hours for 41mm and 40 hours for 45mm. That manufacturer estimate is distinct from the reviewer’s observed runtime. Battery Saver activates at 10%, changing display and background behavior, so results may differ if that mode is reached or use patterns change.

What did the review establish about heart-rate and sleep tracking?
Heart rate during two runs
Orellana compared Watch 5 readings with a Polar H10 chest strap on a three-mile uneven-terrain run and a one-mile track run. The reported average differences were 0.96 bpm (0.70%) and 1.65 bpm (1.10%), respectively. Across those two comparisons, the average difference was under 2 bpm, or roughly 1%. These small-sample observations describe those runs only; they do not establish clinical accuracy or performance across users and conditions.
The reviewer also noticed that the watch was slower to follow rapid changes in heart rate. In her one-mile comparison, the Pixel Watch 4’s reported average difference was 8.68 bpm (5.64%), but that single comparison is not a broad model-to-model performance finding.
Sleep tracking
The review includes sleep tracking in the battery-use description, but Orellana did not validate sleep accuracy in a sleep study. It therefore does not establish how closely the watch’s sleep measurements match clinical or laboratory measurements.
Rank #3
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
GPS evidence
The review did not test Google’s strongest GPS comparison claim in the relevant dense-city environment. It cannot establish how the Watch 5 performs against that claim in those conditions.
How does the design hold up?
Orellana liked the circular, all-screen design, while noting that exposed glass may be vulnerable to scratches. She had not scratched her Watch 5 after a week; her concern was informed partly by her earlier experience with the Pixel Watch 4, so it is a caution rather than a reported scratch on the new watch.

Workout Builder and Coach
Workout Builder was unavailable on the watch during the review, although Orellana could use the phone app’s workout-creation flow. She also described Coach, which can use a photo and prompt to build a workout for Google Health Premium subscribers. The review listed that subscription at $10 per month as of August 2026; that is a dated report, not confirmation of current pricing or availability.

Health Guardian and longer-term trends
The review describes Health Guardian as extending emergency health features, including detection of possible breathing emergencies and persistently low blood oxygen, with emergency-contact behavior if the wearer is unresponsive. It also discusses potential longer-term blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends.
Orellana said the trend features were not intended to diagnose conditions and did not have FDA clearance at the time of publication. Do not treat these functions as diagnoses or assume their regulatory status has since changed without current authoritative confirmation. The review’s account of intended emergency behavior is not a substitute for emergency services or medical advice.
What software and phone ecosystem does it suit?
Orellana identifies Wear OS 7, Live Updates, connected-device controls, and integration with Android services as strengths. Those features are most relevant to people who use compatible Android services and want them available from a watch. The review also relays Google’s promise of additional Gemini features later in 2026; that was a future promise at publication, not a feature the review established as available.
What is the verdict?
The Pixel Watch 5 is easier to recommend as a first Pixel Watch or an upgrade from a much older model than as a replacement for the Pixel Watch 4. The one-week review found useful Android integration, fast charging, and close heart-rate readings in two runs, but also short practical battery life, exposed-glass concerns, and features that were not ready during testing. Buyers should weigh those observed trade-offs against the reported $400 starting price and confirm current pricing and feature availability.
