If your Pixel is running out of space, turn on Smart storage to automatically remove photos and videos that are already backed up. But if the warning is about your Google Account storage, Smart storage will not help: check the shared Gmail, Drive and Photos quota instead. These are separate storage limits, so first identify which one is full.
First identify which storage is full
Your Pixel’s device storage holds apps and files on the phone. Google Account storage is a separate shared quota for Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. A full phone needs a local cleanup; a full account needs you to review cloud usage, change applicable backup settings or add capacity.

| Option | What it addresses | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|

| Change Google Photos backup quality | Storage used by future or qualifying backups | Effects on existing items and Pixel-specific terms vary. |

Free up space on the Pixel with Smart storage
Smart storage is the one-setting fix when the phone itself is nearly full and backed-up photos or videos are taking up space. Google says it can automatically clear those local copies when device storage is almost full. The backed-up copies remain available in Google Photos while you are connected to the internet. See Google’s Pixel instructions for freeing up phone space.
- Open Settings → Storage → Free up space.
- Tap the menu, then Settings.
- Turn on Smart storage.
To remove selected items manually instead, use Settings → Storage → Free up space, where the available options depend on your device and Android version. If you want to keep local files but move them off the phone, Google also documents copying files and folders to a computer with a USB cable.

If Google Account storage is full, find what is using it
Google Account storage is shared by Gmail, Drive and Photos. Google lists up to 15 GB per account across those services; check your account’s current usage rather than assuming Photos is the cause. Google Photos’ storage manager can show usage and suggest cleanup categories such as large photos and videos. You can access the manager even without a paid Google One membership.
- Open Google Photos on Android and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Photos settings → Backup → Manage storage.
- Review the usage and suggested categories, then inspect items before choosing anything to delete.
For details on the shared quota, see Google Photos’ storage and activity guidance and the Android storage manager instructions.

Check backup quality before changing it
Google says Google Photos backups in Original quality use Google Account storage. If Photos appears to be using a large share of the quota, review the backup-quality setting and its terms before changing it. The effect depends on the device’s eligibility and the existing library; changing a setting should not be assumed to reclaim space already used by every photo in the account.
Google documents historical exceptions, including some older uploads and some eligible Pixel device backups. Those exceptions depend on dates and device eligibility, so they do not apply automatically to every Pixel. Google’s storage policy guidance explains the conditions. For context, Google announced that new High quality uploads would begin counting toward shared storage on June 1, 2021, while eligible uploads made before that change were exempted; this is a historical policy date, not a general exemption for current uploads.
Be careful when deleting cloud content
Removing a cloud item to free Google Account storage is different from clearing a local copy to free phone space. Before confirming a cleanup, check which service and copy you are deleting. Google says Photos items in the bin are permanently deleted after 30 days. Items deleted from Drive or Gmail through the storage manager are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered; Google also warns that permanently deleted content cannot be recovered with Google Takeout.

Copy files to a computer
Use this for local files you want to keep but do not need stored on the phone. You need a compatible USB data cable and computer. Copy and verify the files before deleting the phone copies; this process does not increase your Google Account quota.

If the shared account quota is genuinely full and you want to keep the content, a Google One plan is an option for more storage. Plan details and availability vary. First use the storage manager to establish what is consuming the existing quota; cleanup may be enough.
