Google says Smooth Display increases battery usage and recommends turning it off to save power. However, Google’s published guidance does not compare that change with lowering resolution, so it cannot establish which saves more—or by how much—on a particular phone.
What each setting changes
- Refresh rate is how often the screen updates. A higher rate can make scrolling and animations look smoother; Smooth Display enables a higher refresh rate on supported Pixel models.
- Resolution is the amount of rendered detail on the screen. Lowering it, where that option exists, reduces the image detail the phone displays.
These settings affect different aspects of the display. Do not assume every Pixel offers a resolution control: the available settings depend on the model and software version.

Which setting has clearer battery evidence?
Google’s Pixel display guidance explicitly says Smooth Display “increases battery usage,” and Google’s battery-saving recommendations include turning it off. That makes refresh rate the more clearly documented first experiment—not a proven winner in a measured comparison against resolution reduction. Google’s published pages do not provide a controlled test ranking the two changes or a percentage or runtime gain for either one. - Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch.
- Tap Smooth Display, then turn it off.
- Use the phone as you normally would and compare battery use over a comparable period. Treat the result as specific to your own phone and usage; the change is not a guaranteed or quantified saving.
Menu labels and availability can vary by model or software version. If Smooth Display is not listed, check your phone’s current display settings rather than assuming the feature is supported.

What Smooth Display supports across Pixel models
Google’s display-settings help lists the following supported maximum refresh rates. These are feature specifications, not estimates of battery saved by switching the feature off. Google Pixel Help: Smooth Display availability.
| Pixel model | Published Smooth Display range or maximum |
|---|---|
| Pixel 8a | Up to 120 Hz |
| Pixel 8 Pro | 1–120 Hz |
| Pixel 8 | 60–120 Hz |
| Pixel Fold | Up to 120 Hz |
| Pixel 7 and Pixel 7a | Up to 90 Hz |
| Pixel 7 Pro | Up to 120 Hz |
Google’s hardware specifications list the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 at 1080 × 2424 resolution with Smooth Display at 60–120 Hz. Those figures describe the phones’ specifications; they do not show how much battery a resolution or refresh-rate change saves. Google Pixel phone specifications. Other display settings worth trying
Google’s battery guidance also recommends reducing screen brightness, turning off Always-on Display, and choosing a shorter screen timeout. These are additional options, not evidence that one particular change will produce a predictable saving on every Pixel. Google Pixel Help: battery-saving recommendations.

How to interpret the result
Battery impact varies with the phone model and how the display is used, including brightness and time the screen stays active. Google’s published advice supports trying Smooth Display off, but it does not quantify the effects of these interacting factors or compare refresh-rate reduction with resolution reduction in a controlled test. For a numeric head-to-head answer, you would need a model-specific test under comparable conditions.
