Use Face Unlock as the convenient first option when your Pixel supports it and can see your face; keep Fingerprint Unlock available for low light, sunglasses, face coverings, or whenever you prefer a touch. Neither is a universal winner, and both work alongside your PIN, pattern, or password.
Which Pixel models support each method?
Google’s Face Unlock guidance lists Pixel 7 and later, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. A separate Google screen-lock page also lists Pixel 4, so availability depends on the device and the specific support guidance. Check your model’s Settings if you do not see the option. Google’s Face Unlock setup instructions and screen-lock guidance describe supported devices.

Fingerprint sensor placement also varies: Pixel 6 and later phones have an in-display sensor near the bottom of the screen, Pixel 5a and earlier have a rear sensor, and Pixel Fold uses its power button as the sensor. Google’s fingerprint setup instructions cover the relevant models.

#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
When should you choose Face Unlock?
- Choose it as your everyday first option if your Pixel supports it, you commonly pick up and look at the phone, and your face is usually unobstructed and well lit.
- On Pixel 8 and later, it can also verify supported app sign-ins and purchases.
- Keep another unlock method ready for dim conditions, sunglasses, or a face covering. Google’s Face Unlock guidance describes those limitations.
When is fingerprint unlock the better fit?
- Prefer it when you want to unlock by touching the phone instead of presenting your face.
- Use it as the alternative when Face Unlock cannot recognize you because of low light, sunglasses, or a face covering.
- It can verify supported app sign-ins and approve purchases. Sensor location depends on the Pixel model, as described in Google’s fingerprint instructions.
What should you know about security and privacy?
Google cautions that biometric unlocking may be less secure than a strong PIN, pattern, or password. Use a strong screen-lock credential as your backup, and remember that Face Unlock is not immune to someone else unlocking the phone: Google says, “Your device can also be unlocked by someone else if it’s held up to your face.” Google also warns that a person who looks very similar to you, such as an identical sibling, may be able to unlock it. A copied fingerprint can pose a risk as well.
Google says the face model is stored securely on the device, is used only for Face Unlock, and is not shared with Google services or apps. Its fingerprint security guidance says, “Your fingerprint data is stored securely and never leaves your Pixel device or Nexus phone.” Apps receive only whether a fingerprint was verified.
