If you mean Drifter: Wild West RPG, the located rules describe how to try to escape after combat begins: at the end of a round, attempt to flee unless the event forbids it. For another game, check its title and edition before using these mechanics.
First, identify which Wild West RPG you are playing
Several western tabletop RPGs use bandits and posse encounters, including Drifter: Wild West RPG and Boot Hill. Their rules are not interchangeable. Check the game’s title and edition on the cover or title page; the instructions below apply only to the located Drifter rules, not to western RPGs generally.

How fleeing works in the located Drifter rules
Combat proceeds in rounds. After everyone has attacked in a round, the player may try to flee unless the event says otherwise. The flee attempt uses a D6 outcome table. The rules include a successful result that moves the player to an adjacent hex, and a failed result that keeps combat going and causes a light wound. The available rule text does not establish the specific die faces for those outcomes, so consult the table in your copy rather than guessing.

What to expect while combat continues
Drifter’s combat attacks use a D10, with the roll adjusted by the difference between the attacker’s and opponent’s Finesse. If you have partners, they attack after you. When facing multiple opponents, you choose whom to attack; opponents attack in the order listed in the event. These are combat procedures, not a way to prevent an encounter or guarantee that bandits will not attack.
#1 Best Overall
- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
What you need to follow these rules
If Drifter is your game, use its combat and flee rules and have a D10 available for attacks. The flee procedure calls for a D6. These dice and mechanics should not be assumed necessary for a different Wild West RPG.
