Pixel 6 vs. Pixel 7: Which Used Google Phone Is the Better Buy?

The Pixel 7 is the stronger default used buy for similar-condition phones, while a substantially cheaper, well-checked Pixel 6 can be the better value.

For two unlocked Pixel phones in similar condition and with the same storage, the Pixel 7 is the better default buy: it is lighter and slightly smaller, uses the newer Tensor G2 chip, and has roughly a year more of Google’s update runway. The Pixel 6 makes sense if it costs substantially less and the specific phone checks out. There is no verified current used-price comparison here, so compare live listings rather than assuming one model is always cheaper.

Pixel 6 vs. Pixel 7: the differences that matter used

Google’s specifications show two closely related phones, not a complete redesign. Both have 8 GB of RAM, a 50 MP main rear camera, a 12 MP ultrawide camera, and an OLED display with a refresh rate up to 90 Hz. The distinctions most likely to affect a used-phone decision are the Pixel 7’s newer processor, slightly smaller and lighter body, front-camera resolution, and later start to its update period.

Specifications are from Google’s Pixel 6 specifications and Google’s Pixel 7 specifications. Storage choices and network features can vary by region and model variant. Megapixel counts and zoom limits do not, by themselves, establish which phone takes better photos in everyday use.

How long will Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 get updates?

Google commits to five years of operating system and security updates for both models, counted from when each first became available on the Google Store in the US. Because the Pixel 7 arrived about a year after the Pixel 6, its support period also began later, giving it roughly a year more runway. Google’s policy wording describes the commitment but does not give exact final support dates for these models on this page. Check Google’s current Pixel update policy for the applicable terms. Google says updates may roll out gradually and can depend on the carrier and device.

#1 Best Overall
Google Pixel 6 5G, 128GB, Stormy Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Google Pixel 6 powered by Google’s first-generation Tensor processor, enabling advanced on-device AI features such as more natural voice typing, quick language translation, and improved image processing without relying heavily on cloud services.

To see the software and patch level on a phone you are considering, open Settings → About phone → Android version and check the Android version and security update information. A current patch level is useful when assessing the handset today; it does not change the model’s original update-window start date.

Does the Pixel 7 justify paying more?

That depends on the actual listings. Compare the total delivered cost for the same storage, similar condition, and similar seller protections; a lower sticker price can be offset by shipping, a weak return policy, or uncertain repair history. No current used-price premium is established here, so there is no reliable universal amount the Pixel 7 is worth paying extra.

  • Premium Display Technology: 6.1" FHD+ up to 60Hz, OLED, HDR at 429 ppi, 1080x2400 pixels, 20:9 ratio, Android 12, upgradable to Android 13, 4410mAh Battery

  • Advanced Camera System: Rear Camera: 12.2MP, f/1.7 + 12MP, f/2.2, Front Camera: 8MP, f/2.0, Under Display optical Fingerprint
  • Wide Network Compatibility: Global 4G LTE and 5G Bands
  • Carrier Unlocked Freedom: Discontinued US model, Carrier Unlocked without carrier logos, Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Straight Talk, and other carriers, Unlocked Bootloader not available on carrier unlocked models
  • Choose the Pixel 7 if the price gap is modest, both phones are similarly clean, and you value the newer Tensor G2 generation, lighter body, or longer update runway.
  • Choose the Pixel 6 if it is clearly cheaper, passes your condition checks, works with your carrier, and its remaining update period fits your plans.
  • Walk away from either listing if the seller cannot confirm unlock status, charging is unreliable, the screen or frame is damaged, or battery condition is unclear and there is no meaningful return option.

What to check before buying either used Pixel

A model specification cannot tell you whether an individual battery has aged well or whether the phone has hidden damage. Ask the seller about repairs and battery behavior, and use a return period to test the device rather than treating its original capacity rating as a health report.

  1. Confirm identity, storage, and carrier fit. Verify the exact model and storage, whether it is unlocked, and compatibility with the carrier and region where you will use it. Network support can vary by model variant.
  2. Inspect the screen and frame. Look for cracks, pressure marks, display abnormalities, and frame damage. Check that the screen responds across its surface.
  3. Test cameras and charging. Try the front and rear cameras, inspect the lenses, and confirm that the phone charges reliably. Pay attention to unusual heat during ordinary use.
  4. Review the seller’s terms. Compare return windows and warranty coverage, and ask whether the phone has been repaired or has known battery issues. Prefer a clear remedy if a fault appears after delivery.
  5. Compare like with like. Evaluate total delivered price against phones with the same storage and comparable condition, not a damaged or differently configured listing.

The listed typical capacities are 4,614 mAh for Pixel 6 and 4,355 mAh for Pixel 7, according to Google’s specifications. These are model-level figures, not measurements of the battery in a used unit; they should not be used to predict that one particular phone will last longer than another.

Google Pixel 6 5G, 256GB, Stormy Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Google Pixel 6 powered by Google’s first-generation Tensor processor, enabling advanced on-device AI features such as more natural voice typing, quick language translation, and improved image processing without relying heavily on cloud services.

Size, handling, and cases

The Pixel 7 is 197 g with a 6.3-inch display, compared with the Pixel 6 at 207 g and 6.4 inches. That makes the Pixel 7 the more compact, lighter option on paper. The phones have different listed dimensions, so buy a case made for the exact model rather than assuming Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 cases will fit interchangeably.

What the camera and processor specifications do—and do not—tell you

The rear-camera headline hardware is similar: both list 50 MP wide and 12 MP ultrawide cameras. Google lists Super Res Zoom up to 7x on Pixel 6 and up to 8x on Pixel 7; the front camera is listed at 8 MP on Pixel 6 and 10.8 MP on Pixel 7. Those numbers describe specifications, not a controlled comparison of image quality. Likewise, Tensor G2 is a newer processor generation than the original Tensor, but these specifications do not quantify a real-world speed or battery-life advantage.
