Google Voice is the clearer choice if your priority is a provider that says it does not use service content for advertising and encrypts texts and attachments in transit and at rest. Pinger’s TextFree offers a free, ad-supported option, but Pinger says it may analyze keywords from outbound messages to tailor ads. Neither service’s cited disclosures establish end-to-end encryption, and their retention statements cover different kinds of data.
That makes this a comparison of published policies and selected features—not a security audit or a full feature-by-feature test. The best fit depends on whether you value TextFree’s free, ad-supported model or Google Voice’s stated approach to advertising and data protection.

How each service uses messages and other data
Pinger TextFree: ad-supported use may include message keywords
Pinger says the ad-supported TextFree app uses data from users, devices, and app use for tailored advertising. Its policy specifically describes analyzing keywords from outbound message content to place users into audience segments. Pinger says the extracted keywords do not include personal or identifying information about message participants. That is Pinger’s disclosure of its own practices; it is not independent verification of how the system operates.
Pinger also lists call and text times, durations, and phone numbers, and says records in that category are retained for two years. It lists account-associated contacts as retained while the account remains open. Do not interpret the two-year period as the retention period for all TextFree messages or content: Pinger identifies a particular category of records. Its policy also describes disclosures to communications back-end providers, service providers, and advertising companies for stated purposes, as well as longer retention of specific information in connection with legal and governmental requests. Google Voice: no advertising use, but service processing still occurs
Google says information in Google Voice is not used for advertising. It also says content may be processed for service functions such as spam filtering, while performance and crash data are collected for reliability and troubleshooting. Not using Voice content for ads does not mean Google does not process data to operate the service.
Google describes call history—including numbers, dates, times, and durations—as well as greetings, voicemail, SMS, recorded conversations, and other account-related data as information it stores and processes to provide Voice. Google’s Voice data description explains the categories it lists.

What the encryption statements do—and do not—mean
Google says Voice texts and attachments are encrypted in transit from a Google Voice client to Google and encrypted at rest in Google data centers. That is useful protection for data moving to Google and data stored there, but it is not the same as end-to-end encryption, which would mean the service provider could not read the message content in the same way. The cited Google statement does not claim end-to-end encryption.
The cited Pinger materials do not establish end-to-end encryption either, and they do not provide a matching, specific account of encryption for TextFree calls and messages. So neither service can be described on the basis of these disclosures as offering verified end-to-end-encrypted communications. Do not treat Pinger’s optional privacy tools as encryption: they are described as separate features, not as protection that changes how TextFree messages are encrypted.

What deletion means for each service
Pinger’s listed retention periods are category-specific
Pinger states two years for certain call/text time, duration, and phone-number records, and says account-associated contacts remain while the account is open. Those are distinct data categories, not a blanket schedule for all information. Pinger also says it may retain specific information longer in part to respond to law-enforcement and governmental needs. Pinger’s policy is the source for these statements.
Google says some deleted data may persist temporarily
Google says users may delete Voice call history, voicemail, SMS, and recorded conversations. It cautions that some information may remain temporarily on active servers for billing or other business purposes and that residual copies may remain in backup systems. It also says anonymized copies of call-record information are retained for reporting and auditing. Deleting an item therefore should not be read as a guarantee that every related copy disappears immediately. Google’s Voice data description covers these qualifications.

The two companies’ statements are not directly comparable retention schedules: they describe different categories and use different qualifications. For either service, consult the current policy for the particular type of data you want removed or understand.

Calling and device differences to check before choosing
Pinger’s calling FAQ says the web version of TextFree does not support placing or receiving phone or video calls. Google says Voice texts, calls, and voicemails sync across devices. These statements are useful distinctions, but they do not establish a complete parity chart for every device, country, or account type.
Availability, number eligibility, porting rules, emergency-calling treatment, and supported devices may depend on geography and account type. The cited material does not establish a current, comprehensive matrix for those questions. Check each service’s current official availability and feature information for your country and account before relying on a particular number or calling capability. Google publishes a separate privacy disclosure for Workspace customers; its number-porting description includes exchanging details such as name, address, and phone number with the losing carrier, so do not apply Workspace terms automatically to consumer Voice. Google Workspace Voice privacy disclosure.
Which service is a better fit?
- Consider Google Voice if the published policy statements that Voice content is not used for advertising and that texts and attachments are encrypted in transit and at rest align with your priorities. Remember that the cited encryption description does not establish end-to-end encryption.
- Consider TextFree if a free, ad-supported service suits your needs and you accept Pinger’s disclosed use of outbound-message keywords for ad targeting. If you want ad-free use or its optional data-protection features, check the current TextFree Plus terms rather than assuming those features are included in the free version.
- Compare your actual calling needs against each service’s current rules for your country, account, device, and number. In particular, do not assume TextFree’s web version can place or receive calls.
These are the companies’ published disclosures, not independent audits of their systems. For sensitive communications, neither of the cited source sets establishes end-to-end encryption; choose a service whose documented protections match the confidentiality you require.
