1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf a Pine Script signal appears and then disappears, first find out whether it was an expected open-bar change or a mismatch that makes the script’s historical behavior unreliable. TradingView uses “repainting” for differences between historical and realtime calculations; the term alone does not prove that a script is defective. Check when values are confirmed, how alerts trigger, and whether higher-timeframe data or realtime-only logic is involved before relying on the signal.
What repainting means—and when it matters
TradingView defines repainting broadly: a script’s historical and realtime calculations or plots can differ. On an open bar, high, low, and close are still changing, so an indicator can show a condition that disappears before the bar closes. That is different from a script that displays a signal on a past bar only after the fact, uses future information in historical calculations, or depends on live updates that a conventional backtest cannot reproduce. TradingView’s repainting documentation explains these distinctions.

Instead of asking only “Does it repaint?”, ask what behavior your use case requires:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Does the script calculate or display the same way on historical and realtime bars?
- Do signal markers wait for the realtime bar to end?
- Do alerts wait for the end of the bar before triggering?
- Does the script plot or draw values into the past?
- Do its
request.security()calls expose future information on historical bars? - Does a strategy use
calc_on_every_tick = true?
A changing value may be acceptable for a live, provisional indicator. It is a problem if you treat that provisional value as a confirmed signal or assume a backtest represents behavior that only exists during realtime updates.

Debug the discrepancy in this order
1. Reproduce exactly what changed
Watch the signal on an open chart bar. Note whether it vanishes before the bar closes, remains at the close, or appears to move to an earlier bar after the chart reloads. Record the chart timeframe and the bar where the behavior occurs so you can compare the same event, rather than relying on a remembered alert or screenshot.
An intrabar condition that fades as price changes is not the same as a marker that is later drawn on a bar in the past. TradingView documents both fluid realtime values and misleading past plotting as repainting-related behavior, but they call for different investigations. See its repainting overview.
2. Trace calculations that use a developing bar
Inspect conditions and plotted values that depend on the current bar’s high, low, or close. Those values can change with each feed update while the bar is open. Indicators recalculate during that period; before an update, Pine rolls applicable state back to the last committed state, then commits the final execution when the bar closes. Historical bars hold the confirmed outcome, not the sequence of intermediate price movements. TradingView’s execution-model documentation describes this rollback and commit behavior.

This explains a common case: a condition becomes true during the bar, then false before the close. If your intended signal must survive on historical bars, decide whether it should become actionable only once the bar is confirmed.
3. Choose the confirmation point deliberately
To make a condition wait for the chart bar’s closing update, gate it with barstate.isconfirmed. TradingView documents this variable as true on historical bars and on the closing update of a realtime bar. Using a preceding-bar value is another way to base a decision on already confirmed data. Either approach can make output align with confirmed historical values, but the trade-off is latency: the signal is not final until the close, or until the next bar if you use the preceding bar’s value. The bar-states documentation covers confirmation, and the repainting documentation discusses confirmed-value approaches.
barstate.isconfirmed does not work inside a request.security() call. Do not assume adding it around a higher-timeframe request confirms that requested bar; audit the request itself in the next step.

4. Audit every higher-timeframe request
A higher-timeframe bar may still be developing while several lower-timeframe bars form. A request.security() call can therefore return a value in realtime that later differs after the script restarts and uses historical data. TradingView’s documented stable pattern offsets the requested expression by one bar and uses barmerge.lookahead_on:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchrequest.security(syminfo.tickerid, timeframe, ta.wma(close, length)[1], lookahead = barmerge.lookahead_on)
The offset requests a past, confirmed value. Do not pair barmerge.lookahead_on with an unoffset current-bar expression: on historical bars, that can make a higher-timeframe bar’s final value available earlier than it was in realtime. See TradingView’s documentation on other timeframes and data for the behavior and pattern.
5. Test alerts separately from chart markers
An alert can trigger while a realtime bar is still open, even if the plotted condition later disappears. If you want the alert to wait for the closing update, choose Once Per Bar Close when creating it. That controls premature firing on an open bar; it does not fix a higher-timeframe request that leaks future values into historical bars or a script that plots events into the past. TradingView’s alerts FAQ explains alert frequency, while its repainting documentation covers other causes.

6. Compare strategy execution with the history available
Check whether a strategy sets calc_on_every_tick = true. With that setting, it can execute on realtime price updates, but historical bars do not contain the same intrabar price path. Live order behavior can consequently diverge from historical calculations, so the backtest may not represent that realtime behavior. The execution model is documented in TradingView’s Pine Script execution-model guide.
7. Look for state or time that historical bars cannot recreate
varip can preserve state across realtime updates that ordinary historical OHLC data does not retain. timenow can also behave differently in realtime and on historical bars. These features may serve realtime purposes, but plots or backtests that depend on update-by-update information cannot be reconstructed from ordinary historical bars. If you find either, determine whether the script’s intended output is a live-only signal or a historically reproducible one. TradingView’s repainting documentation discusses these cases.

Classify the mismatch before changing code
| What you observe | What it can indicate | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| A signal appears during an open bar and disappears before close | A condition based on fluid realtime values | Current-bar high, low, and close; whether confirmation at bar close is required |
| A marker appears later on an earlier bar | Past plotting or future information in historical calculations | Plotting logic and any higher-timeframe request |
| An alert fires, but the plotted condition does not remain | The alert may have triggered before the bar was confirmed | Alert frequency and the condition’s confirmation point |
| A live strategy behaves differently from its backtest | Realtime intrabar executions may not be represented in historical bars | calc_on_every_tick and any logic using realtime-only state |
| A result changes after reload without an obvious code change | Historical/realtime calculation differences, data-feed revisions, or changes in chart history | Reproduce the event, then check the script’s data sources and execution assumptions |
TradingView notes that data-feed revisions and changes in available chart history can also change behavior outside the script author’s control. A reload difference is evidence to investigate, not by itself proof of a coding defect. See TradingView’s discussion of repainting and external data changes.

Match the fix to the signal you need
There is no universal switch that removes every form of repainting. Compare an approach against the intended use:
- Confirmed values: Waiting for bar confirmation improves consistency with confirmed historical results, at the cost of acting later.
- Higher-timeframe values: Use a prior-bar expression with
barmerge.lookahead_onwhen the goal is a stable confirmed higher-timeframe value; using the current expression with lookahead can create misleading historical results. - Alerts: Set frequency to Once Per Bar Close if the alert should wait for the chart bar’s closing update. This does not repair unrelated script logic.
- Realtime-only behavior: If the logic depends on intrabar state or updates that historical OHLC cannot preserve, treat its historical plot or backtest as unable to reproduce that live sequence.
The useful goal is not to eliminate every value that changes while a bar forms. It is to make clear which values are provisional, when a signal becomes final, whether history can reproduce it, and whether alert timing matches that decision point.
