You may not be able to freeze a hosted model or its decoding behavior, but you can define what a patch must contain and reject proposals that violate that contract. Treat the generator as untrusted: keep apply credentials outside its environment, validate its structured output locally, and require independent tests and human review before changes are applied.
This workflow is a set of design proposals, not an independent security standard or an empirical evaluation. Its central distinction is practical: constrain the patch that crosses your boundary rather than relying on a remote endpoint to behave consistently. As the source article puts it, “Chat output is not a safe apply API.”

A remote generator can change, produce different output on a later request, or return text that is not a usable patch. Instead of treating its response as trusted instructions, require a specific envelope: a defined intent, a fixed base revision, an explicit set of file changes, and named tests. Then make a local gate decide whether the proposal is even eligible to reach review.

This does not pin the model, guarantee repeatable generation, or prove a patch is correct. It pins the conditions under which a generated change may be considered.
Define the envelope before requesting a patch
The example uses JSON Schema Draft 2020-12. Its PatchEnvelope rejects additional properties and requires four fields: intent_id, base_sha, files, and tests. It requires at least one file and one named test. Each file action is either modify or add, and paths are restricted to src/ or tests/.

These are example policy choices, not universal requirements. In particular, the sample excludes deletions and absolute paths, which may rule out legitimate work in a particular repository. Adapt the allowed actions and directories to the project deliberately rather than loosening checks implicitly at apply time.
Use a local gate before review or application
Separate the workflow into intent preparation, remote generation, envelope validation, and application. The generator should return the envelope; a local process should decide whether it satisfies the contract.
Rank #3
- Freeze the intent and base. Assign an
intent_idand record the checked-out base SHA before generation. The envelope must carry both so a patch cannot silently drift to a different task or revision. - Request structured output. Ask the generator for the specified envelope rather than treating free-form chat text as an apply command.
- Validate the schema locally. Reject missing fields, unexpected properties, malformed data, disallowed actions, or paths outside the contract.
- Check repository-specific constraints. Compare
base_shawith the checked-outHEAD; reject absolute paths and parent traversal; reject amodifyaction for a file that does not exist. - Discard invalid output. Do not repair an invalid envelope inside the apply environment. If you retry, create a fresh intent ID and preserve the failed attempt for traceability.
- Run a dry apply check, then tests and review. A successful dry apply shows that the diff parses and can be applied in that context. It is not evidence that the behavior is right; the named tests and human review address different questions.
Test the gate itself with deliberately invalid output, such as an extra property, a stale base SHA, a path containing parent traversal, or a modification of a missing file. A gate that has not been shown to reject bad envelopes is only an intended control.
Keep the generator outside the trust boundary
Treat the remote generator’s server disk as hostile. Do not mount the working tree into that environment or put credentials capable of applying changes there. Apply credentials should remain in a separate local or otherwise controlled environment, after validation.

Decide what information leaves the repository before using a remote generator. The source cautions against remote generation for secrets, customer data, unreleased code, and work that will not receive human review. If the task requires such material, this workflow does not make disclosure safe; use an appropriate alternative process.
Make behavior tests independent
Named tests should be written independently of the model proposing the patch. If the same model generates both a change and its only tests, the gate can become circular: the tests may merely encode the model’s assumptions rather than independently check the intended behavior.

Keep the intent, returned envelope, and test output together so the change can be replayed or audited later. That record helps explain what was requested, what was proposed, and what checks ran; it does not turn a passing test suite into proof of correctness.
Quick Recap
What this contract can—and cannot—establish
- It can reject structurally invalid proposals: schema, base-revision, path, and file-existence checks can prevent certain classes of bad input from reaching review.
- It cannot certify product intent: a patch may satisfy the schema and still do the wrong thing.
- It cannot guarantee test coverage: named tests can miss behavior, and even independent tests cover only what they exercise.
- It does not establish race or performance properties: the described gate does not score model quality or prove those system characteristics.
- It does not replace human acceptance: a reviewer must still assess whether the proposed change is appropriate for the project.
