To build an MCP server for a Django app, either register a small set of purpose-built tools with the official Python SDK or adapt selected Django REST Framework (DRF) views with a Django MCP integration. Choose based on how much of your API you want agents to see. In either case, explicitly verify caller identity, permissions, and deployment behavior: an MCP endpoint does not automatically make every exposed operation safe.
MCP gives model hosts a standard way to access capabilities such as tools, resources, and prompts. The official Python SDK supports stdio, Streamable HTTP, and SSE, and its documentation requires Python 3.10 or later and identifies the v2 documentation line as stable.

Choose how Django capabilities should appear to an MCP client
The main design choice is whether to create a deliberate agent-facing interface or adapt existing API operations. A custom server is usually the better fit when an agent should have a few carefully defined capabilities. A DRF adapter can reduce duplicated definitions when existing API views already represent the operations you want to expose.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Approach | What you define | Best fit | Review closely |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official Python SDK with custom tools | Typed Python functions and, when useful, resources | A small, intentionally limited set of agent operations | Input validation, caller context, and the code path that enforces permissions |
| DRF MCP adapter | Selected ViewSets or views, or configured view discovery | Reusing an established DRF API surface | Which actions become tools, generated names and schemas, and whether API permissions apply to each invocation |
DRF commonly organizes endpoints with ViewSets and routers, and supports authentication and pagination. Those features are useful building blocks, but an API being available to ordinary clients does not by itself make every operation appropriate for an agent.

Build a purpose-built server with the official Python SDK
Register typed tools and resources
The SDK lets you register ordinary Python functions as tools and URI-addressable functions as resources. Type hints supply tool input schema, so a small server does not require manually writing JSON Schema or parsing MCP protocol messages.
from mcp.server import MCPServer
mcp = MCPServer("Demo")
@mcp.tool()
def add(a: int, b: int) -> int:
"""Add two numbers."""
return a + b
This is the SDK’s illustrative pattern, not an application-ready Django integration. Replace a demonstration function with narrowly scoped operations that call your application’s existing service or domain logic. Define the inputs an agent actually needs; do not expose broad model access merely because it is convenient.
Develop and inspect the protocol surface
The SDK quickstart documents uv run mcp dev server.py to start MCP Inspector for development. Inspector requires Node.js tooling, including npx, on PATH. Use it to inspect registered tools and their inputs as you develop; it does not replace tests of Django permissions or the deployed HTTP path.

For project background on the DRF layer, LearnDjango’s DRF tutorial points readers to William S. Vincent’s Django for APIs. That is API-layer learning material, not an MCP implementation guide.
Adapt an existing DRF API selectively
Register only the views and actions you mean to expose
DRF MCP’s getting-started guide describes project setup and registration of specific ViewSets, as well as view auto-discovery. Its example maps ViewSet actions such as list, retrieve, create, update, partial update, and destroy to separate tools.
That mapping is a capability, not a recommendation to publish every action. Before enabling discovery or registering a ViewSet, enumerate the operations an agent should perform and exclude everything else. Inspect the resulting tool names and argument schemas; confirm that list operations are bounded and that write operations express the intended constraints.

Account for package-specific behavior
Integrations differ in how they configure endpoints, express tools, and pass request context. The django-mcp-server repository, for example, documents a declarative Django-style toolset and a DJANGO_MCP_AUTHENTICATION_CLASSES setting, including DRF token authentication as an example. Its documentation also points to an OAuth2 integration.
That repository warns that Django session state and low-level SDK tool decorators can interact poorly with WSGI request and thread behavior. Treat this as guidance for that integration, not a universal property of Django or MCP; verify it against the package version and the server interface you deploy.
Make identity and authorization explicit
Do not assume that exposing an operation through MCP automatically carries over the protection of the API endpoint it resembles. Verify how the integration authenticates each call, which user or service identity reaches Django, and whether the relevant authorization checks execute for every tool invocation. A package setting is not evidence that a particular deployment is protected correctly.

Authentication defaults can vary by package and release. The PyPI page for django-mcp-server 0.5.7, released October 10, 2025, says its authentication-class setting defaults to no authentication. That is a version-specific statement, not a safe assumption about other versions or integrations; check the documentation for the package you actually install.
- Identify the caller for each MCP request, including whether it is an end user or a shared service account.
- Enforce the appropriate object-level and action-level permissions inside each exposed operation.
- Keep sensitive reads and destructive writes out of the agent surface unless they are explicitly needed and appropriately constrained.
- Test denied as well as allowed requests, including attempts to access another user’s data.
Test the MCP boundary and the Django boundary
Test tools in process
The SDK quickstart shows an in-memory test using Client(mcp) to call a server tool directly. This exercises protocol interaction without starting a subprocess, opening a port, or selecting a transport. Use this layer to check registered tool names, input validation, result and error shape, and behavior for representative calls.

Test Django API behavior separately
DRF’s testing guide documents tools including APIClient and RequestsClient. RequestsClient can exercise API views in a more end-to-end style while remaining in process; it does not make real network requests. These tests help verify authentication, permissions, pagination, and application responses at the API boundary.
Use a real HTTP client against a test deployment when the question is about network behavior—such as reverse-proxy headers, transport authentication, or connection to the deployed MCP endpoint. In-process tool and API tests cannot prove that the production-facing route is configured correctly.
Cover the failure paths that matter
- Confirm invalid and missing inputs fail predictably.
- Check that list tools return bounded results and that pagination behavior is clear.
- Verify authenticated user context and permission-denial behavior for both reads and writes.
- Exercise at least one request through the intended HTTP deployment path if you will deploy over HTTP.
Deploy Streamable HTTP with its surrounding server configured
Set host and origin allowlists
The SDK’s deployment guide explains that Streamable HTTP host and origin checks help protect against DNS rebinding. Its defaults are localhost-oriented. For a real hostname, configure TransportSecuritySettings with the allowed host and, for browser clients, the allowed origin. A mismatched Host can produce HTTP 421; an invalid Origin can produce HTTP 403.
Handle TLS termination and proxy trust
If TLS terminates at a reverse proxy while Uvicorn serves HTTP behind it, the guide says to configure trusted proxy headers with --proxy-headers and --forwarded-allow-ips. This lets the application recognize the original HTTPS request and avoid redirects that downgrade to HTTP. Trust only the proxy addresses you control rather than arbitrary forwarding hops.
Provide process management and cross-process coordination
“An MCPServer is a protocol implementation, not an application server,” as the SDK deployment guide puts it. The SDK exposes an ASGI app for an external server or process manager; production process management, health checks, and settings belong to the surrounding deployment. The guide describes Uvicorn as an example for running multiple workers, rather than providing a workers= setting on the MCP server itself.
If your server uses change notifications across multiple processes, the SDK’s in-memory subscription bus is not enough to coordinate them. The deployment guide says to provide a cross-process bus for that use case. Deployment details may change across SDK releases, so verify the guide for the version you deploy.
Match the transport to the way clients connect
The Python SDK documents three transport options. Select one based on the client integration and operating environment rather than assuming every Django MCP server should use HTTP.
Quick Recap
| Transport | Typical consideration |
|---|---|
| stdio | Useful when a local client launches the server as a process; configure the client and process lifecycle together. |
| Streamable HTTP | Suitable for a network endpoint; plan host and origin checks, TLS proxy handling, and an ASGI process manager. |
| SSE | Supported by the SDK; confirm client compatibility and consult the installed SDK’s transport guidance for deployment details. |
