In short: A disc-based PS5 game requires a compatible console with a disc drive and the disc itself; a digital game is bought and downloaded through a PlayStation account. Digital games can be shared with other users on one PS5 when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. Neither format should be treated as an unconditional promise of resale or permanent access: Sony’s cited terms are a Europe-region document from October 2020, and game-specific services can change.
What changes when you choose a disc or a digital copy?
The main difference is how you access the game. A disc copy uses physical media and requires the disc drive to be installed in your PS5. A digital copy is obtained from PlayStation Store through the purchasing account; the game is downloaded to the console.

Sony’s PS5 Quick Start Guide for CFI-71XX states that digital purchases and downloads require an internet connection and account sign-in, while disc-based games can be played when a disc drive is installed. These are setup requirements, not a universal ranking of which format is more convenient.

Can I resell a physical PS5 game?
Do not assume that having a physical disc automatically means you can resell it without restrictions. Sony’s Software Usage Terms document labeled October 2020, issued for Europe, says users must not resell disc-based or digital software unless Sony expressly authorizes it and, when another company publishes the software, that publisher additionally authorizes it. The document’s date and regional scope matter: it does not establish current resale law or the terms that apply in every country.

The same cited clause covers digital software, so a digital purchase should not be assumed transferable or resalable either. Check the current terms and applicable law for your location before relying on a specific resale right. The relevant document is Sony’s October 2020 Software Usage Terms.
Can I share my digital PS5 games?
Yes, within Sony’s stated console-sharing setup. When Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on a PS5, any user of that console can play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games, including when that PS5 is offline. Sony allows the feature on one PS5 at a time; it is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in.

Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play
- Sign in to the PS5 with the account that owns the games.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable if the feature is not already enabled for that console.
To enable it on a different PS5, disable it on the previous console first. If you cannot access that console, Sony’s account-management option to deactivate all devices can be used remotely, but Sony says remote deactivation is available only once every six months. These are separate features from whether a game was bought on disc or digitally. Sony says selected PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared with other users on a primary PS4 and one PS5 with the relevant console setting enabled; that does not mean every Plus benefit is shared. Sony also says most PS4 and PS5 online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus, with some game-specific exceptions. Check PlayStation Plus support for which benefits apply.

Share Play lets an invited online friend watch or participate in a game session without owning the game. It is not the same as giving that friend the digital purchase or enabling offline access on their console.

Choose based on the friction you would rather manage. A disc avoids downloading the game as the initial route to access, but requires a compatible drive and the disc must be on hand. Digital avoids disc handling, but requires account access and a completed download. The official guidance cited here sets out those requirements; it does not quantify download times, storage needs, prices, or a universal convenience advantage.

- Consider disc if you have a drive-equipped PS5 and prefer access through physical media.
- Consider digital if account-based access and downloading suit the way you use the console, and Console Sharing and Offline Play fits your household.
- For either format, do not equate owning or retaining the copy with guaranteed perpetual access to online services. Sony’s guide says specific online features may be withdrawn on reasonable notice and service availability is not guaranteed.
