A phpMyAdmin 500 error during a large SQL import does not identify the cause by itself. Check the PHP and web-server error logs first, then verify which PHP runtime and configuration Laragon is actually using. Only after that should you adjust upload and execution limits or test a different import route. The available account of this specific failure does not establish the author’s logs or final fix, so this walkthrough separates a practical diagnostic sequence from one Laragon user’s reported experience.
Start by pinning down when the import fails
Before changing settings, record the conditions of one reproduction. A 500 can arise at different stages, and a file that fails before upload completes points to a different part of the path than one that uploads and then fails while queries run.

- SQL dump size and the exact visible error.
- Whether the browser fails during upload or after the import begins processing.
- Laragon version, selected PHP version and build, phpMyAdmin version, and database-server version.
- Any recent configuration changes and the time of the failed attempt.
This helps avoid treating a generic server error as proof that the dump exceeds an upload limit. In a Laragon discussion dated November 23, 2025, a user reported a 400 MB dump and a 500 error despite increasing several PHP limits; that report is a separate case, not a diagnosis of every similar failure. Check the active logs before raising limits
Reproduce the failure once while checking the PHP error log and the web-server error log configured for the running Laragon setup. Laragon maintainer leokhoa advised checking the PHP error log in the November 2025 discussion. The participant reported that a particular laragon/tmp/php_errors.log file had no entries, but the discussion did not establish a final diagnosis for that NTS PHP configuration.

If that presumed file is empty, locate the error log configured for the active PHP runtime and check the web-server log too. An empty file is not evidence that no server-side error occurred; it may simply not be the log receiving the request’s errors.
Confirm Laragon’s active PHP version and phpMyAdmin compatibility
Laragon can manage multiple PHP versions, so a php.ini edit in an installed but inactive PHP folder may have no effect on the web request. Confirm the selected runtime in Menu > PHP > Version, then make sure you are inspecting the configuration used by that runtime. Laragon documents adding PHP versions and adding phpMyAdmin through Menu > Tools > Quick add > phpmyadmin. Review PHP’s upload and execution limits as a set
The phpMyAdmin project’s FAQ for version 5.2.2 identifies four PHP settings to inspect when large imports fail: max_execution_time, upload_max_filesize, memory_limit, and post_max_size. It explicitly notes that post_max_size must be larger than upload_max_filesize. phpMyAdmin FAQ, section 1.16
Check these values in the configuration that handles the web request, not just in a separate PHP installation or command-line environment. Adjust only the settings implicated by the dump size, import stage, logs, and available machine resources. Restart the relevant Laragon service after changing PHP configuration, then reproduce once while watching the logs. The documentation does not prescribe universal values for every dump or computer.

phpMyAdmin also has import/export controls named $cfg['ExecTimeLimit'] and $cfg['MemoryLimit']. They are not substitutes for understanding PHP’s server-side limits or the error evidence. Raising them blindly does not explain or resolve every HTTP 500. phpMyAdmin configuration reference
Compare PHP builds only when the evidence points there
If the logs and compatibility checks leave runtime behavior as a plausible cause, a controlled PHP-build comparison can be informative. In the November 2025 Laragon discussion, the maintainer suggested testing PHP 8.2.28 Thread Safe against the user’s PHP 8.2.28 NTS setup. The user later reported that PHP 8.2.29 Thread Safe imported successfully, while noting other issues remained. That is one user’s outcome, not a general rule that Thread Safe builds fix phpMyAdmin imports.

For a useful comparison, keep the dump, database, phpMyAdmin version, and relevant settings as consistent as possible while changing the PHP runtime. Follow Laragon’s version-switching instructions, and treat a successful import as a clue about that setup rather than proof of a universal cause. Laragon discussion

Use phpMyAdmin’s configured UploadDir
phpMyAdmin supports importing a SQL file placed in the directory configured as $cfg['UploadDir']; the file can then be selected from the Import tab. Keep this directory outside the publicly served web tree where possible. Import with the MySQL command-line client
The phpMyAdmin FAQ describes using the MySQL client directly. From the client connected to the intended database, run:
source filename.sql;Use the correct database connection context before sourcing the file. This skips phpMyAdmin’s browser upload route; it does not guarantee that a SQL error, database-server constraint, or resource problem will disappear. phpMyAdmin FAQ, section 1.16
