For web designers, that makes Fill suited to adjusting a bounded detail and Expand useful when a photograph needs more room for a banner or hero layout. Neither guarantees a clean, on-brand result: inspect the generated area and test the final crop at the sizes your site will use.
What each Photoshop feature does

Adobe announced both Photoshop features as generally available in October 2024. Adobe’s announcement describes Fill as a way to add, remove, or modify content in an image and Expand as a way to extend images.
When Generative Fill is useful
Use Fill when the change belongs within a selected portion of an image. A web designer might adjust a small distracting detail in a source photograph or replace an element that conflicts with a layout. The prompt guides the edit, but it should not be treated as a reliable way to reproduce exact product features, brand marks, text, or other factual details.

Look for mismatched lighting, edges that do not blend, or details that seem repeated or implausible. For product or editorial imagery, also check that the result still represents the subject accurately.
When Generative Expand is useful
Expand addresses a different problem: the composition needs to extend outside the original image boundary. For example, if a photograph is too tightly framed for a wide website hero, expansion can generate additional surrounding image area. This is a practical application of Adobe’s image-extension feature, not a promise that the new area will match perfectly.

- Choose a source image and the target composition, such as a wide hero area.
- Use Photoshop’s Generative Expand to extend the canvas beyond the existing image bounds.
- Inspect the generated edges for inconsistent lighting, implausible objects, repeated patterns, or visible seams.
- Preview the asset in the actual page layout and test its crop at relevant responsive breakpoints.
Check the full image at the size it will appear on the site, not only in a close-up editing view. A generated edge that looks plausible at one crop may become conspicuous when a narrower breakpoint removes surrounding context.
Keep Photoshop and Illustrator Generative Expand distinct
Photoshop Generative Expand extends a raster image. Illustrator has a separate feature with the same name: Adobe’s June 17, 2025 update describes Illustrator Generative Expand as growing vector graphics or an artboard beyond its original bounds, with generated vectors that remain editable. That vector workflow is not the method for extending a photograph in Photoshop. Adobe’s Illustrator update explains the distinction.

Credits and access depend on the plan
Adobe currently categorizes Photoshop Generative Fill and Generative Expand as standard generative features. Its Help Center says most standard generations use one credit per generation, notes exceptions, and explains that access depends on plan; partner models are categorized as premium. Check the current documentation and your account for applicable access and credit terms rather than assuming a fixed monthly allowance. Adobe’s generative credits guide has the current details.

What Adobe’s usage figure does—and does not—show
Adobe reported that 22 billion assets had been generated in just under two years in an April 24, 2025 Firefly announcement. That is Adobe’s cumulative company-reported figure; it is not an independent measure of image quality, designer adoption, or time saved. Adobe’s announcement provides the figure.

- Fit to the asset: Does the edit look consistent with the surrounding image’s lighting, perspective, and detail?
- Fit to the design: Does the result support the page’s purpose and visual direction rather than merely filling empty space?
- Responsive behavior: Does the image still work when the layout crops or resizes it at different breakpoints?
- Accuracy: Could generated details mislead viewers about a product, person, place, or event?
- Rights and model terms: Do not assume every output or model has identical clearance or terms; check the applicable Adobe documentation for the feature and plan.
These are review criteria, not claims of a benchmark or hands-on test. Adobe’s feature descriptions establish what the tools are intended to do, but they do not establish that a particular prompt will yield a production-ready asset.
