Photoshop Freezes When Printing on Windows 11: What to Check

A practical way to diagnose Photoshop crashes or freezes during printing on Windows 11, starting with whether other apps can print.

If Photoshop crashes or stops responding when you print in Windows 11, first check whether the same printer works from another app. That helps separate a Photoshop-specific failure from a Windows printing problem. Adobe’s current guidance covers general Photoshop crashes and a narrower unresponsive Print Settings button; it does not establish one confirmed cause or universal fix for Photoshop crashes during printing.

Start by locating where printing fails

Before changing settings, note your Photoshop version, Windows 11 build if available, printer model and connection type, and the exact step that triggers the freeze. Does it happen when opening the print dialog, selecting Print Settings, submitting the job, or waiting for output? Also note recent Photoshop, Windows, printer-driver, or connection changes. These details help describe the problem; none alone proves its cause.

Try printing to the same printer from another application. If another printer is available, testing it from Photoshop can also help narrow the scope. These comparisons are diagnostic steps, not confirmed fixes.

  • Other apps also fail, or jobs get stuck: investigate Windows printing, the printer driver, and the Print Spooler.
  • Other apps print, but Photoshop fails: focus first on Photoshop updates and Adobe’s crash-isolation steps.
  • Only the Print Settings button is unresponsive: use Adobe’s specific guidance for that control; it is a narrower issue than a full Photoshop crash.

If printing fails in more than Photoshop

Windows 11’s printer troubleshooting path is the right starting point when multiple applications cannot print or the queue appears stuck. Microsoft recommends running the printer troubleshooter in Get Help. Its guidance also covers checking drivers and clearing or restarting the Print Spooler. A spooler problem can leave jobs stuck and cause applications to hang when printing.

  1. Open Microsoft’s Windows printer connection and printing troubleshooting guidance and follow the Windows 11 steps, including the Get Help troubleshooter.
  2. Check for stuck jobs and follow Microsoft’s instructions for the Print Spooler if the queue will not clear or applications hang when printing. See Microsoft’s Print Spooler troubleshooting.
  3. Check whether the printer driver is current and compatible with your Windows version. Use the printer manufacturer’s support channel for its driver rather than an unrelated driver-download utility.

If the problem appears limited to Photoshop

Adobe’s crash guidance recommends checking known issues and updating Photoshop. Make one change at a time, restart Photoshop, and try printing again so you can identify whether a step made a difference. Adobe’s instructions address general crashes, not a confirmed Windows 11 printing-specific bug.

Temporarily test the graphics processor

As a diagnostic, turn off Use Graphics Processor in Photoshop’s preferences, restart the app, and test again. If this changes the behavior, it points toward a possible graphics-related interaction, but does not by itself establish a permanent fix. Follow Adobe’s known issues and crash troubleshooting guidance for the relevant version and steps.

Test without optional or third-party plug-ins

Adobe also recommends isolating optional and third-party plug-ins when troubleshooting crashes. Launch Photoshop while skipping them, then test printing. Treat this as a temporary diagnostic; restore normal plug-in loading after the test unless you have identified a specific plug-in problem. Adobe’s performance and freezing guidance covers GPU and broader performance troubleshooting.

Reset preferences only if needed

Resetting Photoshop preferences restores defaults. Before doing it, preserve any settings you rely on; then use Adobe’s crash guidance for the current reset procedure. Re-test printing after the reset rather than changing several other settings at the same time.

If only Print Settings is unresponsive

Adobe has a specific article for an unresponsive Print Settings button, including when Printer Manages Color is involved. It identifies older drivers, files printed with an older driver, or damaged printer-driver preferences as possible factors and recommends obtaining a current driver compatible with Windows from the printer manufacturer. See Adobe’s Print Settings troubleshooting. This advice applies to that control’s symptom; it is not proof that a driver update fixes every crash during printing.

When it still crashes

If the failure continues, record the exact steps that reproduce it, whether other apps or printers work, and any changes you tested. Include the Photoshop version, Windows build, printer model, and connection type when contacting Adobe support or submitting a crash report through Adobe’s available route. Avoid describing a suspected cause as confirmed unless a repeatable test supports it.
