In Photoshop desktop, you can soften a selection either before drawing it by setting Feather in the Options bar, or after drawing it with Select > Modify > Feather. The Feather Radius is measured in pixels; choose it for the image and transition you need, because there is no universal best value.
Which feathering method should you use?

Both routes soften the selection boundary. The first applies the setting as you make the selection; the menu command adjusts a selection already in place. Adobe’s desktop instructions document both methods in its selection guidance.

Set Feather before making a selection
- Select a Lasso or Marquee tool from the toolbar.
- In the Options bar, enter a Feather value in pixels. A value of 0 leaves the edge hard.
- Draw the selection. The feathering is applied to its boundary.
Marquee tools create geometric selections, while Lasso tools support flexible, hand-drawn or edge-following selections. Choose the tool that fits the shape, then set Feather before drawing. Adobe’s current help pages describe the Marquee tools and the Lasso tool.

Feather a selection you have already made
- Make and keep the selection active.
- Choose Select > Modify > Feather.
- Enter the Feather Radius in pixels and choose OK.
If you are adjusting an existing selection, Adobe notes that Feather and anti-alias settings can be preserved when modifying it. See Adjust selections in Photoshop for that context.

Choose a radius and check the result
The radius controls the width of the softened transition. A restrained starting value is usually easier to evaluate than a large one, but the right amount depends on the image scale, the size of the selection, and how gradually the edit should blend. Adobe’s instructions explain where to enter the radius but do not prescribe one value for every image.
Do not rely on the marching-ants outline to judge the full softness. Adobe says the feather becomes visible after you move, cut, copy, or fill the selection. Apply the edit you intend to use, or test with a fill or mask, and inspect the transition in the image.

What to do about the 50% selection warning
If Photoshop reports that “No pixels are more than 50% selected,” the feather radius is too large for the selection to produce a clearly defined selected area. Reduce the radius or make a larger selection, then apply Feather again. Adobe notes that you can continue with the current mask even when the edges are not visible, but the resulting selection may be extremely faint.

Feather, anti-aliasing, or Select and Mask?
- Use Feather when you want a broad, gradual fade between selected and unselected areas. It blurs the boundary, which can also soften fine detail there.
- Use anti-aliasing when the edge is jagged and you want to smooth pixel stair-steps rather than create a broad fade. For supported tools, enable it in the Options bar before making the selection.
- Use Select and Mask when the boundary is complex and needs detailed refinement, such as hair. A large global Feather Radius is not a substitute for refining those edge details.
Adobe distinguishes feathering from anti-aliasing in its selection-edge guidance and lists Feather among Select and Mask’s global refinement options in its hair-selection instructions.

Photoshop desktop and iPad steps are not interchangeable
The menu path and Options bar steps here are for Photoshop desktop. Adobe has also documented a Feather setting for selections on iPad, but that reference was updated in 2019, so its controls should not be assumed to match the current desktop interface.
