If your phone shuts off and will not turn back on, first check the charger, cable, outlet and charging port; then give a deeply drained battery time to respond and try the restart steps for your exact model. A blank screen can also point to a display problem, and no single cause can be identified from the symptom alone.
Why a phone may shut off and stay off
A completely depleted battery or a charging problem is a sensible first possibility to check. Other causes include a temporary software freeze or a hardware fault. Samsung lists these and system malfunction among possible reasons a Galaxy device may not turn on; the same symptom by itself does not establish which cause applies to your phone.

Check the charging setup before troubleshooting further
- Plug the phone into a known-working wall outlet using a compatible cable and power adapter. Make sure both ends are firmly connected.
- If possible, test the cable and adapter with another device, or try a known-working compatible cable and adapter. Google recommends checking these components and trying alternatives if the current setup does not work (Pixel Help; Android Help).
- Remove a case if it prevents the connector from seating fully. Look for visible debris or damage on the cable and charging port. Do not insert a metal object into the port. Samsung also advises checking for signs such as corrosion, bent pins, liquid exposure, overheating, swelling or physical damage (Samsung Support).
- Leave the phone connected and allow time for a depleted battery to respond. A charging icon may not appear immediately.
Charging times in manufacturer guidance are specific to the device family, not a universal rule. Apple advises charging an iPhone for one hour before trying again if it will not turn on. Google says a Pixel whose battery was fully drained and that has been off for a long time may show no charging icon, vibration or display response for up to 25 minutes while plugged in. Follow the guidance for your model rather than treating either interval as a rule for every phone (Apple Support; Google Pixel Help).
Try the restart sequence for your exact phone
A force restart can help when a phone is frozen, but button combinations vary by model. Use the manufacturer’s directions if your phone is not one of the examples below.

iPhone with Face ID
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Apple gives different button combinations for older iPhones with a Home button. Check its model-specific instructions if your iPhone does not have Face ID.
Samsung Galaxy example
Hold the Power/Side button and Volume Down together for at least seven seconds. Release when the phone vibrates or the logo appears, following Samsung’s guidance for the device (Samsung Support).

For the initial restart attempt, Google’s Pixel guidance says to hold the Power button for 5–7 seconds. Its page includes additional checks for an unresponsive phone, so consult it for your model rather than assuming this step applies to every Android device (Google Pixel Help).

A blank display does not prove the entire phone has failed. If the device appears unresponsive, try the correct restart sequence, then see whether it can ring by calling it from another phone or using Google’s Find Hub. Google advises contacting an authorized repair center if the phone rings while its screen remains blank. That is a useful diagnostic clue, not proof of a particular screen fault (Google Pixel Help).

When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
If the phone remains unresponsive after you have tried a known-working charging setup, allowed time for charging and used the correct restart procedure, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. Check warranty and service options for your device. Apple says service may be needed if an iPhone still will not turn on (Apple Support).
Do not jump to a factory reset as an early fix. Google describes a manual reset procedure as an option but warns that it erases all device data. Consider it only after understanding the data loss and whether your information is backed up (Google Pixel Help).
