You may not: fractional shares and dollar-based orders can let you buy part of an eligible stock or ETF instead of paying for a whole share. The right app depends less on its advertised minimum than on its fees, investment choices, automation, account terms, and what happens when you sell or transfer your holdings.
What a micro-investing app actually does
“Micro-investing app” is an informal umbrella term, not one specific kind of financial service. An app may help you save, recommend or manage investments, let you buy and sell securities, or combine those functions. Investor.gov advises checking whether a firm and its professionals are appropriately registered for the services they provide.

It helps to distinguish two approaches:
- Self-directed brokerage: You choose investments and place orders. You control the selections, but you are responsible for deciding what to buy and understanding the risks.
- Automated or advised investing: The service recommends or manages a portfolio based on information you provide. This can reduce the number of decisions you make, but it does not remove investment risk or make fees irrelevant.
Some services combine investing with saving features such as round-ups or scheduled deposits. A convenient deposit method is not the same thing as an investment strategy.
How investing with a small amount works
A fractional share is less than one whole share of a stock or other security. With dollar-based investing, you specify an amount of money rather than a whole number of shares; if the brokerage supports it for that investment, the order can buy a fraction. The SEC’s November 9, 2020 bulletin explains that fractional-share features differ by firm and may be limited to particular securities or order types.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That means the minimum advertised by an app does not necessarily apply to every investment in its menu. Before placing an order, check the eligible stocks or ETFs, minimum purchase, order timing, and any transaction or account charges that apply.
Compare these apps by the job you want them to do
The services below illustrate different ways to start small. Their official pages describe features, not a standardized comparison of total costs, investment choices, account types, support, or suitability. Treat plan prices and terms as changeable, and check the current agreement and fee schedule before opening an account.

| Service | What its official information describes | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Acorns | Subscription plans, recurring deposits, round-ups, and recurring investments as low as $5 per day, week, or month. | Current plan price, which features are included, eligibility, and the total cost relative to your balance. |

| Robinhood | Recurring stock and ETF investments on a selected schedule, which may result in fractional shares. | Current minimums, eligible securities, order terms, and account charges. |
| Fidelity | Fractional shares of stocks and ETFs, with recurring investments also described on its official pages. | Eligible investments, recurring-investment terms, and applicable account charges. |
These are examples to investigate, not a ranking or recommendation. The best fit depends on whether you want to choose investments yourself, automate contributions, receive portfolio guidance, or use a particular account type.
Calculate fees against the balance you expect to have
A flat monthly charge can take a meaningful share of a small account. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy gave a hypothetical example in its September 6, 2023 subscription-fee bulletin: a $3 monthly fee on a $500 account totals $36 per year, more than 7% of that account’s value. This is an illustration, not an average fee or a claim about any one app.

Make your own comparison in dollars: multiply any monthly subscription by 12, then add other applicable account charges and the expenses of the funds you hold. Compare that total with the account balance you realistically expect—not only the minimum deposit shown in an advertisement. A percentage-based advisory fee can also grow in dollar terms as the balance rises, so compare fee structures rather than assuming one format is always cheaper.
Investor.gov’s fee guidance emphasizes that investment costs affect portfolio value over time. Read the full fee schedule, including fund expenses and ancillary charges, and identify whether a fee is recurring, activity-based, or tied to a particular service.

Check flexibility before buying fractional shares
Fractional holdings do not always work like whole shares. Firms can set their own rules for eligible investments, order types, execution timing, minimum amounts, liquidity, voting rights, and transfers. Some firms aggregate fractional orders, and a fractional position may not be transferable to another brokerage. You may have to sell it when moving an account.

Review the brokerage’s fractional-share disclosures and account agreement for the specific position you intend to buy. If you expect to transfer your investments later, find out how fractional holdings are handled before you begin; selling can have tax consequences depending on your circumstances.

Decide whether the app fits your goals and risk tolerance
A low minimum makes it easier to begin, but it does not make an investment safe or guarantee growth. Investments can lose value. Investor.gov recommends considering your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, diversification, liquidity needs, and fees when making investment decisions.
Quick Recap
- Clarify the purpose: Money needed soon may not be suitable for investments that can fall in value.
- Understand the portfolio: Check what the service invests in and whether the holdings provide the diversification you intend.
- Review automation: Understand how round-ups or scheduled contributions are collected, when orders are placed, and what portfolio assumptions or recommendations the service uses.
- Know the exit process: Check how to stop recurring deposits, sell holdings, close the account, or transfer investments.
- Check registration and disclosures: Investor.gov recommends verifying registration for brokers and advisers and reviewing their agreements, fees, and compensation arrangements.
A practical checklist before opening an account
- Choose between a self-directed brokerage and an automated or advised service based on how much investment decision-making you want to do.
- Confirm the minimum contribution and which securities are eligible for fractional or dollar-based purchases.
- Calculate recurring charges for the balance you expect to maintain, and include fund expenses and other account fees.
- Check recurring-investment schedules, order execution rules, and how to pause or cancel contributions.
- Read the rules for selling, voting, and transferring fractional holdings.
- Match the investments to your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, diversification needs, and liquidity needs.
