Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →First check whether the photo actually transferred. If no file appears on the computer, troubleshoot the phone connection, permissions, USB mode, or cloud access. If the file is there but will not open, check its format: Windows may need support for HEIC/HEIF photos or HEVC videos.
Find out whether the photo transferred
Open the folder where you expected the photo to land. If the file is missing, focus on getting the phone detected and making the original available. If the file exists but an app rejects it, focus on format support instead. A transfer problem and an image-opening problem are different failures, even if they begin with the same phone connection.

If the computer cannot see the phone or import photos
Import from an iPhone or iPad to Windows
- Connect the device with a USB cable that supports data transfer, turn it on, and unlock it.
- If the device asks whether to trust the computer, tap Trust or Allow.
- Open Microsoft Photos, choose Import, and select the connected device. Current Apple Windows guidance also calls for installing Apple Devices before connecting and importing through Microsoft Photos.
- If iCloud Photos is enabled, download the original full-resolution photos to the device before importing. Alternatively, access photos that are stored in iCloud using iCloud for Windows.
See Microsoft’s phone-to-PC import steps and Apple’s Windows transfer guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Transfer from an Android phone
- Unlock the phone and connect it to the computer with a data-capable USB cable.
- On the phone, tap the notification that says Charging this device via USB.
- Under Use USB for, select File Transfer.
- Check whether Windows detects the device, then look for the photos or import them using the computer’s photo app.
If it still does not appear, restart the phone and computer, check for Android updates, try another USB cable and USB port, or test with another computer. A cable that only charges the phone will not transfer files. Google’s Android USB file-transfer instructions cover this mode and related checks.

If the copied photo will not open
Check the file extension and media type
Look at the filename ending or the file’s information. HEIC and HEIF usually identify still-image formats; HEVC identifies video encoding. Windows Photos may ask for an extension when it cannot decode HEIF/HEIC images or HEVC video. A video-only HEVC warning does not by itself mean a still photo is damaged.
Microsoft documents several options: install the Windows extensions needed for the format, use a compatible viewing app, or transfer/share the media through a route that converts it. Microsoft also notes that HEIF/HEVC files can be viewed through OneDrive’s website in a browser, while downloaded originals may still need a codec to open locally. A cloud preview therefore does not prove that the local Windows app can decode the original file. See Microsoft’s codec guidance for Photos and its HEIF/HEVC and OneDrive guidance.

Choose a remedy that fits the problem
- Install a codec or use a compatible viewer: addresses local format support and can leave the original file unchanged.
- Convert or reimport a compatible copy: can make the result easier to open, but creates media in another format or encoding. Effects on quality and metadata depend on the method; the cited guidance does not quantify them.
- Use cloud access: helps when the original is stored online rather than on the phone, or when you prefer wireless access. It does not necessarily solve local codec support.
- Try another data cable: may fix a connection or transfer problem, but cannot make an unsupported image format open.
Keep the original before converting or deleting anything. If you use a conversion or sharing route, check that the new copy opens before removing the source.
Keep future iPhone captures compatible with Windows
Apple recommends setting the iPhone camera to Most Compatible for future captures; this uses JPEG for photos and H.264 for video. On current guidance, the path is Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible. The setting affects new captures, not HEIC files already taken or copied. Some iOS devices may not offer this option. See Apple’s compatibility guidance and Apple’s information about HEIF and HEVC media.

If transferring an existing original from an iPhone or iPad, Apple’s current route is Settings > Apps > Photos > Transfer to Mac or PC > Keep Originals to avoid automatic conversion during USB transfer. Menu wording can differ by OS version, so follow the labels shown on the device. On a Mac, Photos or Preview can export an HEIF image as JPEG or PNG; QuickTime can export HEVC video as H.264.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the format and connection checks do not help
Update the computer’s operating system and the app you are using, then identify the file format from its extension or file information. Try a reputable app that supports that format if you believe the file is intact. Older or specialized formats may not work in a particular device, OS, or app. File damage is also possible, but an app’s failure to open a photo alone does not establish that the file is corrupt. Apple’s general guidance on unsupported media is at Apple Support.
