In Procreate Dreams, choose a Flipbook when the artwork needs to change from frame to frame, and choose a Drawing when a painted element should stay visually consistent while it moves. Create either from the Create menu, draw in Draw & Paint, then return to the Timeline to build the scene or refine the motion.
Choose between a Drawing and a Flipbook
The key question is what changes during the animation: the artwork itself, or the placement of one consistent piece of artwork. Procreate’s official Dreams handbook describes a Flipbook as “a multi-track cel animation that is completely contained.” A Drawing, by contrast, can serve as a static scene element or one animated as a whole.

How to start drawing in Procreate Dreams
- Create the content: Tap Create, then choose Drawing or Flipbook to enter Draw & Paint.
- Choose a tool: Select Paint, pick a brush and color, then draw with a finger or Apple Pencil. A Pencil is optional; check compatibility with your particular iPad if you plan to use one.
- Return to the Timeline: When the artwork is ready, go back to the movie Timeline to arrange it with other content and animate it as appropriate.
For a whole painted object that moves without changing shape, make it a Drawing and animate that element in the Timeline. For motion made of successive drawn poses, start with a Flipbook instead.

How to draw frame by frame with a Flipbook
Set the project frame rate before planning the frames
Flipbook’s initial frames correspond to the project’s frames-per-second setting. Set the rate when creating the movie or, for an existing project, use Movie settings → Project → Frames per second. Choose with the intended playback in mind; no single rate is best for every animation.
Build poses on tracks
Draw the poses needed for the movement, then use Flipbook’s multiple drawing tracks to organize parts or layers of the animation. Tracks can be reordered, and their visibility, opacity, blend mode, and masks can be adjusted. This means a Flipbook is not restricted to one drawing layer.

Use frame holds to control rhythm
Not every frame needs a new drawing. Hold a frame or extend its duration when a pose should remain on screen longer; extending frames can create animation “on twos” or “on fours.” Preview playback and adjust durations until the movement reads clearly. Treat those labels as timing approaches, not automatic settings for every scene.
Animate a drawing without redrawing it
When an element’s appearance stays the same but its position or other whole-element motion changes, use a Drawing and animate it through the Timeline’s keyframing or Perform workflow. Procreate Dreams distinguishes Compose, Perform, and Keyframe modes for working with content in the Timeline. This is a better fit than making duplicate poses solely to move an unchanged prop or background element.

Combine drawings, animation, and other content
A Dreams movie can bring together Drawings, Flipbooks, still images, video, text, and audio in tracks. Keep each element in the form that suits its job: a background can remain a Drawing, while a character requiring changing poses can be a Flipbook. Organize and adjust track properties when you need to manage how the visual elements interact.
