If calls go straight to voicemail—or only certain people can’t reach you—look for caller screening, blocked numbers, or call forwarding instead. The right menu depends on your phone and software version.
Start by identifying what happens when someone calls
Ask someone to call while you watch the phone. Note whether the incoming-call screen appears without sound, the call goes to voicemail, or you see a missed call only afterward. A silent screen points first to sound or interruption settings; calls that do not reach the phone call for checks of filtering, blocking, forwarding, or service.

Check ringtone volume and silent settings
iPhone
Turn off Silent mode and check that the ringtone is audible. Apple’s guidance for calls that do not ring or go straight to voicemail also recommends updating iOS. See Apple’s call troubleshooting steps.
Android
Make sure the phone is not set to vibrate or silent and raise the ringtone volume. Android menu labels and paths vary by manufacturer and software version, so use your phone maker’s instructions if the controls differ from the ones described here.

If only certain callers are missed, check call handling
iPhone: unknown callers, filtering, and blocked contacts
Go to Settings > Apps > Phone and review unknown-caller screening, call filtering, and blocked contacts. These settings matter when calls from unknown numbers or particular people do not ring; raising the volume will not resolve a call that is screened or blocked.
Samsung Galaxy: blocked callers and forwarding
Check the blocked callers list and call forwarding settings. If calls are diverted or rejected, the problem is call handling rather than the ringtone.

- Awesome Ringtones For Your Phones
Test sound output before assuming the speaker is broken
Play another sound, such as a ringtone preview or other audio. If other sounds play normally but incoming calls are quiet, return to ringtone volume, silent settings, and interruption modes. Account for connected headphones or other audio output. If the phone makes no sound at all after checking these settings, a speaker problem becomes more plausible; Samsung recommends checking the speaker when no sounds are heard. One missed call by itself does not establish a hardware fault.

When calls go to voicemail despite the settings
If the phone’s settings do not explain calls going straight to voicemail, check whether cellular service is weak or unavailable and contact your carrier for account- or network-specific help. On iPhone, Wi-Fi Calling may let calls use Wi-Fi when mobile service is weak or unavailable, but it depends on carrier support and may not appear as an option. Apple’s call troubleshooting guidance covers this conditional check.
