Yes, someone may be able to locate you through your phone—but usually through a specific sharing feature, account or device they can access, app permission, carrier or data-broker records, or a Bluetooth tracker traveling with you. The official sources reviewed do not establish that an ordinary person can see your phone’s live location simply by knowing its number. Which routes apply, and how precise the location is, depends on your settings, accounts, device, network and jurisdiction.
How can someone get location information from a phone?
“Phone tracking” is not one mechanism. Some routes can show a live or recent location; others involve records collected earlier. A phone’s location toggle does not control every route.

| Route | Who may have access | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Location sharing | People selected in an account or service | Sharing settings for each account and device in use |
| App permissions | Apps allowed to access location | Per-app access and whether precise location is enabled |
| Account or device access | Someone who can access your account, an unlocked phone or another signed-in device | Sharing and access across accounts and devices—not just the phone’s location setting |
| Carrier or data-broker records | A mobile carrier or a service that collected or obtained location data | What the relevant service collects, retains and shares; controls vary |
| Bluetooth item tracker | The tracker’s owner may be able to see the tracker’s location | Unwanted-tracker alerts and the tracker’s own disable instructions |
Location precision also varies. App or device sharing can provide a live location, while carrier network information may be based on the cell sites a connected phone uses. Historical location records are different from a live view. The sources reviewed do not establish a single accuracy level that applies to all phones or services.

The official sources covered here describe location access through sharing, accounts, apps, carrier-held data and physical trackers; they do not establish that an ordinary person can obtain a phone’s live location just by knowing its number. A phone number by itself is not evidence that someone has access to your location. If you are concerned, check the routes below rather than assuming a number lookup explains what is happening.

How do you check who can see your location?
Review location sharing on Apple devices
Apple Find My shares the location of the device designated as the source. Apple’s Find My location-sharing guide explains the feature. On iPhone, Safety Check can help review sharing and access, stop location sharing with people in Find My, reset app privacy permissions and restrict some access to the device. See Apple’s Safety Check guide for its current instructions.
Safety Check does not cover every possible route. Apple notes that it does not address passwords and accounts, social-media sharing or information shared from another device. Review those separately if they apply.

Review Google Location Sharing
Google Location Sharing is off by default and applies separately to each account and device. People you select may see real-time location and information such as battery status; some services may show recent places or an address. Check every Google account and device you use, and consider Maps, Messages, Find Hub, Family Link or Personal Safety where relevant. Google’s Location Sharing help describes the settings.

Check app location permissions
On Android, app controls let you review whether an app can access location all the time, only while in use or not at all, and whether it can use precise location. Remove access that an app does not need. Google’s Android app location-data disclosure guidance says sharing disclosures may be supplied by developers and are not available for every app or store. Treat a disclosure as a clue, not an independent audit of an app’s practices.

Look beyond the visible phone setting
Someone with access to an account, an unlocked phone or another signed-in device may be able to see information beyond what the phone’s location toggle suggests. Check the accounts and devices you actually use, including any sharing features on them. A review of one phone setting cannot rule out access through another device or account.
What can carriers and data brokers know?
A mobile carrier can derive network location from the cell sites used by a connected device. In a US enforcement announcement dated April 29, 2024, the Federal Communications Commission said it fined AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon nearly $200 million for sharing access to customers’ location data without consent and without reasonable safeguards. That is a dated US regulatory action; it does not show that every carrier currently shares every customer’s location, or that the same rules apply in other jurisdictions. Read the FCC announcement.

The FTC’s August 2022 consumer alert describes how precise location information held by a data broker can reveal sensitive visits and patterns. Turning off app access does not establish that information already collected by an app or broker has been recalled or deleted. Collection, retention, access and available legal remedies vary by service and jurisdiction. See the FTC location-data broker alert.

What should you do if your phone warns about an unknown tracker?
An alert means a compatible tracker may be traveling with you; it does not tell you where or when its owner viewed the tracker’s location. Apple’s unwanted-tracking guidance covers AirTags, some AirPods, Find My network accessories and compatible Bluetooth trackers. Android’s unknown-tracker alert guidance covers supported Find Hub tags, headphones and Apple AirTags. Alerts and manual scans have compatibility and configuration limits, so no alert does not rule out tracking by another route.

- Follow the alert on your phone to view the map and identify or locate the item.
- If you find a tracker, use the manufacturer’s instructions to disable it if it is safe to do so. Apple says its trackers “should not be used to track people, and should not be used to track property that does not belong to you.” That guidance concerns those products, not every jurisdiction’s law.
- If you are worried about your safety, go to a safe public place and contact someone you trust or local authorities. Preserve information if doing so is safe.
Turning off your phone’s Bluetooth or Location Services, or enabling airplane mode, does not disable an external tracker. Apple and Android both advise that those phone settings do not stop the tracker itself; follow the tracker’s own disable steps.
What if you suspect stalkerware or coercive monitoring?
Stalkerware is software installed without your knowledge. The FTC warns that it can be concealed, and unusual battery drain or data use alone does not prove that it is present. See the FTC’s stalkerware guidance.
If abuse or coercive monitoring may be involved, a sudden app removal, reset or password change could alert the person monitoring the device. The FTC advises against contacting an advocate or law enforcement from a device that may be monitored. Use a safer device to seek help and, where possible, get safety-planning advice before making changes that could increase risk.
