Phone Keyboards: Choose the Right App for Better Texting

The right phone keyboard depends on your platform and priorities. Compare built-in options, SwiftKey, Grammarly Keyboard, Gboard, and optional Bluetooth hardware.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best phone keyboard depends on your platform and what you want it to do. Start with the built-in keyboard for a simple, no-install option; consider Microsoft SwiftKey for adaptable typing and multilingual input, or Grammarly Keyboard for writing suggestions. No comparable testing establishes one as the most accurate for everyone.

How to choose a phone keyboard

First decide whether you want a different way to enter text or help improving what you write. Then check that the features you care about are available on your phone: iPhone and Android versions do not always match. Try a candidate in the languages and messaging apps you use most, since typing comfort and correction quality depend on your habits and context.

  • For simplicity: begin with the keyboard already on your phone.
  • For swipe typing, customization, or language switching: consider Microsoft SwiftKey.
  • For grammar and writing suggestions: consider Grammarly Keyboard, with its iOS access and connectivity tradeoffs in mind.
  • For physical keys: a compatible Bluetooth keyboard is an optional alternative for longer messages, not a requirement for using an on-screen keyboard.

Compare the main options

Option Best fit Platform and features Important consideration
Built-in iPhone keyboard People who want a straightforward keyboard with no extra installation Native iPhone option; feature details are not stated in the cited comparison It is a low-friction starting point, not a proven accuracy winner.
Microsoft SwiftKey People who value swipe input, predictions, themes, toolbar tools, or multilingual typing Microsoft describes swipe typing, learned next-word suggestions, voice typing, themes, and toolbar customization. It says the app supports over 700 languages overall, with up to five simultaneous languages on Android and two on iOS. Features and language availability can differ by platform. Check the current language list and confirm the specific tools you need.
Grammarly Keyboard People who want help with grammar, clarity, or tone On iPhone, Grammarly describes correction suggestions and support for emoji and swipe features. Its support page lists iOS 17 or later; some advanced suggestion categories require a paid plan. On iOS, suggestions require full access and an internet connection for server-based checking.
Gboard People considering a broad-feature alternative, particularly on Android A 2026 comparison describes it as a broad-feature Android choice and an iPhone candidate, while noting platform differences. That characterization does not establish exact current features, privacy details, or device requirements.
Bluetooth keyboard People who prefer tactile keys or often type longer messages Separate hardware that connects to a compatible phone Check phone compatibility and current product listings; no particular model is established as best.

When the built-in keyboard is enough

If you mainly need to send everyday messages and do not want another app to configure, start with the keyboard already on your phone. A built-in option avoids a separate keyboard installation and offers native integration. If its layout or behavior does not suit you, try another candidate before assuming a paid tool or accessory is necessary.

What Microsoft SwiftKey offers

SwiftKey is a feature-led option for people who want to change how they type. Microsoft describes swipe typing, learned next-word suggestions, voice typing, customizable toolbar tools, and themes. Its product page says it supports more than 700 languages overall and allows up to five simultaneous languages on Android or two on iOS. Microsoft says, “Microsoft SwiftKey learns your writing style to suggest your next word.” That is the company’s feature description, not independent evidence of improved speed or accuracy. Check the current language list and the relevant platform version before relying on a particular language or tool.

When Grammarly Keyboard is a better fit

Choose Grammarly Keyboard when writing assistance matters more than extensive layout customization. Grammarly says its iPhone keyboard can offer corrections and suggestions and supports emoji and swipe features. Its support page lists iOS 17 or later as the requirement, and some advanced categories of suggestions are limited to paid plans. Those terms and features may change, so check the current support information for the specific plan and device.

Understand the iPhone access tradeoff

Grammarly says its iOS keyboard needs full access to connect to the internet and provide server-based checking. The company also says sensitive text, such as passwords and credit-card information, is ignored or excluded on a best-effort basis. This is Grammarly’s own disclosure, not an independent privacy audit or a guarantee. If you are uncomfortable granting that access, use a keyboard that fits your privacy preferences or keep writing suggestions turned off.

How to decide whether a keyboard works for you

  1. Check platform support: confirm that the app and the specific features you want are available for your iPhone or Android device.
  2. Test your everyday input: type and swipe in the languages, apps, and kinds of messages you use regularly.
  3. Review the tradeoffs: consider whether you want voice input, grammar suggestions, themes, language switching, or a physical keyboard, and whether any access or paid-plan requirements are acceptable.
  4. Keep the option that suits your habits: typing comfort varies by device, language, app context, and person, so a short personal trial is more useful than an unsupported universal accuracy ranking.

Why there is no universal accuracy winner

The available material does not provide a controlled, comparable test ranking consumer phone keyboards by speed or accuracy. A 2024 dissertation on text and numerical input discusses several mobile keyboards; its 12-person pilot concerned a separate text-editing study, not a head-to-head keyboard comparison. Claims that one keyboard is definitively fastest or most accurate for everyone therefore go beyond the evidence.
