Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

OLED pixels produce their own light, so an OLED display needs no separate backlight. The difference is how the image is lit—not simply a basic-versus-premium product label.
What does “LED” mean on a TV or monitor?
In common consumer display terminology, an LED TV is generally an LCD TV with an LED backlight. The LEDs provide light, while the liquid-crystal display (LCD) layer controls how much of that light passes through each pixel to form the picture. It is therefore more precise to call the technology an LED-backlit LCD. OLED-Info’s comparison of OLED and LCD explains this common usage.

“LED display” can also mean a direct-view screen in which LEDs themselves form the image. That is a different use of the term. In the ordinary TV comparison “LED vs. OLED,” “LED” usually refers to LED-backlit LCD, not a display made from image-forming LED pixels.

How do LED-backlit LCD and OLED screens make an image?
LED-backlit LCD
LEDs illuminate the LCD panel, either from behind it or from its edges. The liquid crystals modulate that light to create the image. Some LCD TVs and monitors use local dimming: the backlight is divided into zones whose brightness can be adjusted independently. Those zones are larger than individual LCD pixels, so local dimming does not switch off each pixel’s light source separately. Samsung Display describes local dimming as adjustment of sections of an LCD backlight.

OLED
OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode. Its light-emitting materials produce light when electrically driven, and each pixel can be controlled independently. A pixel can also turn off, which lets OLED produce black without a backlight shining behind that pixel. OLED-Info’s technology comparison and Samsung Display’s OLED overview explain the distinction.
What differences are visible in everyday use?
| What you notice | OLED | LED-backlit LCD |
|---|---|---|
| Black and contrast | Individual pixels can switch off, supporting very dark blacks and high contrast. | The backlight remains a separate light source. Local dimming can darken zones, but it cannot control each LCD pixel’s illumination independently. |
| Halos around bright objects | Pixel-level light control avoids the backlight-zone light leakage that can create halos. | With local dimming, a bright object against a dark background can illuminate a larger zone and create a visible halo. |
| Brightness | Brightness depends on the model and image; OLED is not automatically brighter. | Some LCD displays can reach higher peak brightness, depending on model and conditions. Samsung’s monitor guidance says OLED monitors generally struggle to match LCD peak brightness, particularly in well-lit environments; this is broad manufacturer guidance, not a rule for every display. | Prolonged static images | Long periods showing static content can contribute to image retention or burn-in. Risk varies with model and use, and manufacturers describe mitigation features. | The cited sources do not establish a model-independent longevity advantage over OLED. |
These are technology-level tendencies, not guarantees about every product. Actual brightness, picture quality, protections and warranty terms depend on the particular model and how it is used.

Does OLED have burn-in?
Burn-in is a potential concern when OLED displays show the same static elements for extended periods; it is not inevitable, and the risk is not identical across models or use patterns. Samsung’s OLED Monitor Buying Guide describes burn-in as a form of permanent image retention that can result from extended display of static images. Manufacturers also describe features intended to mitigate image retention. If a display will show fixed interface elements or other static content for long stretches, check the specific model’s protections and warranty rather than assuming all OLED screens behave alike.

What do dimming and halo claims actually establish?
OLED controls brightness at the pixel level, while LCD local dimming adjusts sections of the backlight. Samsung Display reports that its laptop OLED display received UL halo-free certification in 2022. That is a product-specific reported certification, not a blanket certification of all OLED displays. How should you use the terms when comparing screens?
- If a TV listing says “LED,” read it as LED-backlit LCD unless it clearly describes a direct-view LED display.
- Look for the screen’s actual panel technology and local-dimming design; “LED” alone does not tell you how many dimming zones it has or how well they work.
- Compare model-specific brightness and performance for your room and content. A technology label alone cannot establish which screen is better for your needs.
- If your viewing includes long stretches of static content, consider OLED’s potential image-retention risk alongside the model’s mitigation features and warranty.
