To reset word suggestions, use the settings for the keyboard that is active on your phone. On iPhone, choose Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary. In Gboard, choose Dictionary > Delete learned words. In Samsung Keyboard, choose Reset to default settings > Clear personalised data. If only one word is wrong, remove that suggestion individually where the keyboard allows it.
First, identify the keyboard you use
The reset controls belong to the keyboard, not to a universal phone setting. The iPhone steps below apply to its built-in keyboard; the Android steps apply only if you are using Gboard or Samsung Keyboard. If the menus differ, check the active keyboard in your phone’s keyboard or language settings, then look for that keyboard’s own dictionary or learned-word controls.

Reset suggestions on an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset Keyboard Dictionary and confirm.
Apple says this dedicated reset erases only words you added to the keyboard dictionary and returns the dictionary to its default state. Apple also notes that rejecting a word suggested while typing can add a word to the dictionary. Choose Reset Keyboard Dictionary, not Reset All Settings or Erase All Content and Settings; those are broader actions. Apple’s support guidance was checked on October 7, 2026.

- Open Gboard’s settings. How to open them varies by device.
- Go to Dictionary > Delete learned words and follow the on-screen confirmation, if shown.
These instructions apply only when Gboard is the active keyboard. If you use another keyboard app, its controls and reset behavior may be different. Google’s Gboard support guidance was checked on October 7, 2026.

Clear personalised data in Samsung Keyboard
Samsung lists this route: Settings > General management > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Samsung Keyboard > Reset to default settings > Clear personalised data. Samsung also documents an alternate route through Predictive text > Clear personalised data.
Menu names and routes can vary by Galaxy model and software version. Samsung says words may be saved as “learned words” while you type and appear in the predictive-text toolbar. Its support guidance was checked on October 7, 2026.

Remove one bad suggestion instead of resetting everything
- Gboard: Touch and hold the unwanted suggestion, then drag it to the Bin.
- Samsung Keyboard: Touch and hold the unwanted suggestion in the predictive-text toolbar.
These actions target an individual suggestion, so they can be a better fit than clearing all learned data. The exact behavior is specific to the named keyboards.
Hide predictions without clearing learned words
Turning off predictive text controls whether suggestions appear; it is different from resetting or deleting learned words. Apple and Samsung document predictive-text controls separately from their dictionary or personalised-data reset options. If you want to keep learned data but stop seeing suggestions, look for the predictive-text setting in the active keyboard’s settings. The precise route depends on the keyboard and software version.
