Philips Hue’s ambition is no longer just to put a bulb on a phone app. Founder George Yianni describes light as a tool for shaping a room, joining entertainment and supporting daily routines. Recent examples include AI-assisted scenes and automations, easier TV synchronization and integrations with other brands—while connected lighting remains Hue’s foundation.
Hue began as a way to control lights from a phone
Signify says the idea took shape around 2008, when Yianni was working on remote controls for Philips LivingColors. He used an iPhone mock-up to explore lighting controls without repeatedly building hardware. The concept became an internal venture and eventually a connected-lighting product.

In a 2020 retrospective, Yianni said the team placed 100 early Hue kits in homes and gathered diaries and interviews to learn how people used them. That was product-development research, not a customer or sales count. Signify also says Apple’s decision to stock Hue bulbs helped signal that the product offered something distinctive.
Yianni later described the ambition as “not just looking at a lighting product, but at an industry-defining paradigm shift for how we approach the way we interact with light in our homes.” That is his retrospective characterization, not an independently measured industry verdict.

What “beyond smart lighting” means
In Signify’s account of Yianni’s vision, lighting should do more than switch on and off: “Lighting is all around us, all the time, so it should be doing something more than just being on or off.” The company frames that broader role in three ways.
Room ambience and decoration
Hue can change the feel of a space through color and brightness, offering a flexible alternative to changing decor such as wall color or curtains. The emphasis is on using light as part of a room’s atmosphere, not merely as a remotely controlled utility.

Entertainment synchronization
Hue can coordinate lights with what is on a screen, making illumination part of a viewing or gaming setup. The goal is to connect lighting to the entertainment experience rather than treating it as a separate background task.

Signify says Hue aims to support healthy circadian rhythms and better sleep. That is a company-stated product ambition; the sources cited here do not establish that Hue improves sleep or produces clinical health outcomes.

How AI and TV features put that vision into practice
In a September 3, 2026 interview with TechRadar, Yianni discussed two AI applications. The distinction he drew was between using AI to solve a specific user problem and adding it simply because AI is fashionable: “There’s a push for AI for the sake of it, and we’ve really tried to shy away from that.”
SpatialAware scenes
SpatialAware uses the positions of lights in a room to create and apply lighting scenes. The idea is to make the result responsive to where the lights are, rather than treating every bulb as an isolated control.

Custom AI Behaviors
Custom AI Behaviors lets users describe a desired routine in natural language and translates that description into an automation. In practical terms, it is an attempt to make setting up behavior easier than manually configuring each condition and action.
TV synchronization options
TechRadar also reported that Philips Hue Play Screen Sync offers a camera-based way to synchronize lights with a TV. The interview described a setup using a single light strip over Bluetooth without a Hue Bridge, as well as an updated 4K HDMI Sync Box option. Those are specific reported configurations, not evidence that every Hue feature works without a Bridge; setup and compatibility depend on the product.

Why Hue is integrating products from other brands
A September 8, 2026 T3 interview report described a Hue–Nanoleaf collaboration involving decorative Nanoleaf panels. Hue representatives said the panels filled a gap for people who wanted the Hue experience in more rooms. Yianni’s explanation of the partnership was straightforward: “If what’s there is already a great fit, why would we do it ourselves?”
The same report says selected Hue switches, including Tap Dial, can control Sonos speakers. These examples suggest Hue is willing to connect with other brands when an existing product addresses a user need. They do not establish a specific future partnership pipeline: Hue representatives said further brand and platform integrations were under consideration but did not name planned partners.
Hue is broadening lighting, not leaving it behind
The shift is best understood as an expansion of what connected lighting can do. Hue’s original proposition—controlling individual lights—still matters, but the platform now also reaches room ambience, entertainment synchronization, AI-assisted customization and integrations with other products. The bulb remains central; the larger ambition is to make light participate more naturally in how people use their homes.

That platform approach also reflects an ongoing feedback loop. Signify says user input helps shape Hue’s roadmap, while leaving room for unexpected ideas. Its 2025 annual-report excerpt names products and portfolio additions including Hue Bridge Pro, Hue Essentials and Hue Secure video doorbell products, though those examples do not by themselves establish how every feature works or what is available in each market.
