Compare the setup you actually need: compatible bulbs and fixtures, hub requirements, controls, smart-home compatibility, and the cost of adding remotes or sensors. If you already own a hub or lighting system, that existing equipment may matter more than the price of a bulb.
How to choose between Philips Hue and IKEA smart lighting
Start with your current devices and the way you want to control your lights. List any Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro, IKEA DIRIGERA hub, older IKEA gateway, bulbs, remotes, sensors, and smart-home controller you already own. Then check whether the specific products you plan to buy work with that setup.

Build a like-for-like comparison for one room or the whole home. Match the bulb base and fixture, brightness, white-temperature or color capability, and the controls you need. Include any hub, remotes, or sensors required for your preferred app, voice commands, schedules, or automations. - Check the product generation: IKEA’s older TRÅDFRI instructions do not necessarily describe every newer IKEA product.
- Confirm the connection path: A device may connect directly, through a vendor hub, or through a smart-home platform. Matter support does not guarantee that every feature is available on every platform.
- Check local availability: Product ranges and compatibility details can vary by market; verify the exact model and listing where you live.
What the hubs and Matter support mean
Philips Hue Bridge and Bridge Pro
Philips says Hue Bridge and Bridge Pro support Matter, and Hue products connected through either bridge can use Matter after the bridge software update. Hue products connected by Bluetooth cannot use Matter through the Bridge. Philips also lists Alexa, Apple Home, and Google Assistant integrations. Philips notes specific feature exceptions: the Hue Play HDMI sync box and the dial on the Tap dial switch are not included in the same Matter support statement. If you rely on either accessory, check its compatibility details rather than assuming Matter exposes every function.
IKEA DIRIGERA and older IKEA lighting
IKEA describes DIRIGERA as a hub for newer and older IKEA smart-home devices and as a Matter bridge for supported products. Its UK guide says DIRIGERA can bridge older Zigbee devices and that supported IKEA Matter devices work with platforms including Apple Home, Google Nest, and Amazon Echo. IKEA announced its DIRIGERA Matter Bridge plans on 11 September 2024. The announcement describes IKEA’s intended interoperability, not a guarantee that every IKEA device, generation, or feature works with every Matter platform. See IKEA’s announcement.
Do IKEA smart lights work with the Philips Hue Bridge?
Some do, subject to the product and software version. IKEA’s US support page says the IKEA lights covered by its instructions can pair with a Philips Hue Bridge when their software is version 1.2.x or later. For older software, IKEA instructs users to update the lights with a TRÅDFRI gateway and the IKEA Home smart app first. Do you need an IKEA DIRIGERA hub?
It depends on the devices and controls you want. IKEA’s UK guide recommends DIRIGERA to connect new and older IKEA devices and describes its Matter roles. For the legacy IKEA system covered by IKEA US, app control requires a TRÅDFRI gateway; without it, the legacy app cannot control those devices. Requirements differ by generation and use, so check the product’s regional support page before buying a hub.
IKEA’s US legacy support material describes timers, groups, scenes, app controls, remotes, and voice integrations with a TRÅDFRI gateway. It lists Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant integrations for the products covered there. Do not assume these instructions apply unchanged to every current IKEA product or platform.

Compare the complete setup, not just bulb prices
- Identify the fixtures. Record each socket or fitting, bulb size, and whether you need a bulb or an integrated lamp or panel.
- Match lighting capabilities. Compare brightness and whether you need adjustable white temperature or color. Check the exact product specifications in your local market.
- Choose the controls. Decide whether you need app control, schedules, scenes, voice commands, physical remotes, or sensors.
- Map the hub path. Check whether each device works directly with your platform or requires a Hue Bridge, Bridge Pro, DIRIGERA, or an older IKEA gateway for the desired functions.
- Price the whole basket. Use current local listings for the same number and type of lights, plus any hubs and controls you need. No matched current price basket is established here, so a general price winner cannot be stated.
Which system is right for your home?
- Consider Philips Hue if you already use Hue or want Hue products connected through a Bridge or Bridge Pro to participate in Matter, subject to Philips’s stated exceptions and Bluetooth limitation.
- Consider IKEA if you are building around IKEA lighting or devices and the specific products, hub, and local platform support suit your plans. DIRIGERA is the route IKEA describes for bridging supported newer and older devices.
- Consider mixing them only after checking the exact IKEA model, software, and connection path. IKEA documents Hue Bridge pairing for certain lights at software version 1.2.x or later; that is not a blanket claim that every IKEA and Hue product or feature works together.
