Philips Baristina Review: Consistent Espresso, Little Control

The Philips Baristina automates grinding, tamping and brewing with consistent results, but offers little grind control, average espresso and no built-in milk frothing.

The Philips Baristina is easy to use and repeats its results well, but its espresso is average and it gives you little say over the shot. Expert Reviews’ assessment, published 16 September 2026, judges it a weak-value machine at its reviewed price of £300. It could suit someone who wants a simple step up from pods and accepts ordinary flavour. For anyone who wants genuinely good home espresso, it is a hard machine to recommend.

What the Philips Baristina does for you

Philips describes the BAR300/00 as a whole-bean espresso machine that grinds, tamps and brews espresso or lungo, and it advertises a 16-bar pump. Its product copy reads: “Just swipe the handle. Baristina automatically grinds, tamps and brews your coffee.” Treat the pump figure and the sales line as manufacturer claims. Expert Reviews did not present them as independent measurements.

Expert Reviews’ Danielle Amato describes the machine as a hybrid between a manual espresso machine and a fully automatic bean-to-cup model. It automates grinding, dosing, tamping and brewing, which leaves you very few decisions. That is the central trade-off: the Baristina prioritises convenience over control.

Making a shot, step by step

  1. Fill the 1.2L water tank.
  2. Load whole beans into the bean hopper, which holds up to 170g.
  3. Press the espresso or lungo button.
  4. If you want a stronger drink, press the strength button, which grinds an additional 1.5g.
  5. Swipe the custom portafilter into position. The machine grinds, tamps and brews.
  6. Remove the spent puck from the portafilter and dispose of it yourself.

How easy is it to use?

This is the Baristina’s strongest point. Amato found the process simple and the results consistent, and the controls are limited to the buttons and the portafilter swipe described above. The only hands-on task after each shot is removing and emptying the puck, so daily use involves less than a manual machine would demand.

PHILIPS Baristina Espresso Machine, Grinds, Tamps & Brews, Natural White
  • REAL ESPRESSO, MADE SIMPLE: Baristina grinds, tamps, and brews with a 16-bar pressure pump to extract a robust flavor from your beans.
  • SWIPE. BREW. ENJOY: Swipe the handle and let Baristina do the rest. Coming from bean to cup all in less than 60 seconds.
  • TINY - YET MIGHTY! Compact enough for any kitchen counter, powerful enough for barista-style coffee.
  • FRESH IS BEST: Freshly ground beans give you the greatest coffee aroma.
  • TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT: Espresso. Lungo. Extra intense. Your call.

Can you make adjustments to the Philips Baristina?

Very little. Philips says the grinder has 15 internal settings, but owners cannot choose between them. The machine picks the setting automatically, and Amato could not alter the grind size during testing.

Why the lack of grind control matters

Grind size is the main lever for dialling in espresso when you change beans, because lighter or denser coffees extract differently. With no direct adjustment, you cannot correct a shot that runs too fast or tastes thin. Amato found the grind relatively coarse in her tests. She links this partly to the pressurised filter basket with a single exit valve. That is her assessment, not a verified engineering finding.

Rank #2
PHILIPS Baristina Espresso Machine & Milk Frother Bundle, Black
  • REAL ESPRESSO, MADE SIMPLE: Baristina grinds, tamps, and brews with a 16-bar pressure pump to extract a robust flavor from your beans. In less than two minutes, the Frother produces perfect foam at just the right consistency
  • SWIPE. BREW. ENJOY: Swipe the handle and let Baristina do the rest. Coming from bean to cup all in less than 60 seconds. Hot and Cold: Set the temperature to hot or cold and master every coffee style, from latte macchiato to iced or any other milk based drink: matcha, hot chocolate, etc.
  • TINY - YET MIGHTY! Compact enough for any kitchen counter, powerful enough for barista-style coffee. Easy to clean: Smooth, non-stick surfaces mean you only need a rinse and a wipe to clean your Frother – while the whisk and lid are dishwasher friendly.
  • FRESH IS BEST: Freshly ground beans give you the greatest coffee aroma. With the Frother, you can have any milk, any time: Creates the best possible foam with different types of milk and plant-based alternatives.
  • TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT: Espresso. Lungo. Extra intense. Your call. For fine foam: Set to the ideal temperature and speed, creating the ultimate in stiff, fine foams.

What you can change

  • The coffee type: espresso or lungo.
  • The strength: the extra 1.5g of ground coffee from the strength button.
  • The bean you buy, since the machine accepts any whole beans.

What is the espresso like?

Amato’s verdict on the drink is that it is acceptable but lacks complexity. She used Curve Coffee’s house espresso beans for testing. The table below shows her measurements, which apply to her test setup and are not a guarantee for every bean or user.

Measurement Reviewer’s result (Expert Reviews, 2026)
Coffee in About 12g on average across separate measurements
Espresso out About 40g on average, varying by a couple of grams
Pour time Roughly 16.5 to 17.5 seconds, with a quoted pour of around 17 seconds
Beans used Curve Coffee house espresso beans
Grind Relatively coarse; grind size not adjustable

The consistency is real: shot after shot landed in a narrow range. The limit is flavour. The review’s core judgement is that a consistent but average shot is still an average shot.

Can you steam milk with the Philips Baristina?

Not with the standard machine. According to the review, the Baristina has no built-in milk steaming or frothing. Milk drinks require a separate frother. Philips offers the BAR303 as a machine-and-frother bundle and the BAR311 as a stand-alone Baristina frother. Philips says the BAR311 makes hot or cold foam with dairy and non-dairy milk.

Those are two different perspectives. Philips presents the frother’s versatility. Amato found the frother bundled with the machine she assessed functional but limited to a single foam setting. If you drink milk coffees often, she suggests you may be better served by a machine with integrated frothing. If you buy the Baratza-style setup or the stand-alone machine, she suggests a separate frother such as a Nespresso Aeroccino or a Lakeland milk frother. Those are her suggestions, not a separately verified comparison.

What do you get for the money?

The reviewed price was £300 for the machine. Amato’s reviewed price for the machine-and-frother bundle was £380. Philips’ UK range page listed the following at the time it was checked in 2026. These are catalogue prices, which change, so check them before you buy.

Compared with the alternatives

Expert Reviews argues that the Baristina competes with machines close enough in price that its limitations matter. It names the De’Longhi Magnifica Evo Next as a more automated bean-to-cup alternative. It also describes a manual setup pairing a De’Longhi Dedica with a Baratza Encore, which gives you grind control at the cost of more work. Those prices are point-in-time review context and may have changed.

Philips Baristina Espresso Machine, Grind, Tamp & Brew Coffee Beans in One Swipe, Compact, 16 Bar Pump Pressure, Automatic Grinder, Black with Berry Red Portafilter (BAR301/60)
Your call.

When you compare any of these, score them on the same six points:

  • Convenience and how much you must do yourself.
  • Ability to adjust the grind and extraction.
  • Likely espresso quality.
  • Milk-drink capability.
  • Cleanup and puck handling.
  • Full setup cost, including a grinder or frother that is not built in.

On that comparison, the Baristina wins on the first and fifth points and loses on the second and third.

Should you buy the Philips Baristina?

Buy it if you want to move beyond pods, value the least possible effort, and are happy with a consistent, everyday espresso. Whole espresso beans are the only consumable you need, and the sources do not establish a particular brand or roast as the best match, so choose beans by taste.

Skip it if you want to tune your shots, want strong espresso flavour, or make milk drinks often without buying a separate frother. In those cases a manual setup or a more automated machine with integrated milk will serve you better, even at a higher total cost.
