If a PhantomJS screenshot differs from Chrome, first match the layout viewport, capture region, capture mode, and page readiness. If those conditions match and the result still differs, the browsers’ rendering engines are the main persistent explanation: PhantomJS uses an older WebKit engine, while Chrome uses Blink.
Why the same page can look different
PhantomJS and Chrome do not render pages with the same engine. Chrome for Developers explains: “The main difference between the two is that Phantom uses an older version of WebKit as its rendering engine while Headless Chrome uses the latest version of Blink.” Chrome for Developers’ Headless Chrome shell documentation also distinguishes newer Headless Chrome, which runs the real Chrome browser, from the older standalone headless shell.

That difference can remain even after you align screenshot settings. CSS layout, typography, SVG, and other rendered details may not match across engines. A longer delay or a different crop cannot make WebKit behave like Blink.
Check the comparison conditions first
Match the layout viewport
The viewport is the area the browser uses for page layout. PhantomJS’s viewportSize sets that layout viewport; establish it before loading the page so responsive CSS and text wrapping are evaluated at the intended size. PhantomJS’s viewportSize documentation describes the setting. Width mismatches can change breakpoints and line wrapping; height can also affect visible content or page behavior. Record both dimensions and, where possible, verify the effective viewport from inside each page.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Match the capture bounds and mode
A layout viewport is not necessarily the screenshot’s crop. PhantomJS documents clipRect separately as the portion of a page to capture. The PhantomJS screen-capture guide shows the distinction. Chrome’s command-line screenshot example uses --window-size, and its documentation notes that full-page screenshots require additional steps. Chrome’s Headless Chrome documentation covers those capture options.
Compare viewport screenshots with viewport screenshots, or full-page captures with full-page captures. Check the output image dimensions before pixel-diffing; different output dimensions or crop origins can make an otherwise useful comparison misleading.

Wait for the same visual state
A navigation callback or page-open event does not guarantee that application data, web fonts, images, or animations have settled. PhantomJS examples include a short wait in one viewport example, while Chrome’s Puppeteer example uses networkidle2. These are examples of caller-selected timing, not universal guarantees that a page is visually ready.
Prefer a page-specific signal, such as a selector that appears after the relevant content is rendered. If the page’s appearance depends on animations or time-sensitive content, stabilize those where your test permits and use the same readiness condition for both captures.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
A fair comparison checklist
- Record the environment: note the PhantomJS and Chrome versions, operating system or container image, URL, and capture script or command.
- Set and verify the viewport: use the same CSS viewport width and height before layout, then inspect effective values if possible.
- Match the screenshot geometry: use equivalent crop bounds and the same mode—viewport or full page—and check output dimensions.
- Wait for the page you intend to compare: use a page-specific readiness condition and stabilize dynamic content where practical.
- Compare engines only after those checks: if geometry and page state match but pixels still differ, treat renderer behavior as a likely cause.
Choose the browser that matches the test’s goal
- Testing current Chrome output: generate both baseline and comparison images with the same Chrome or Chromium build and automation path. Keep the browser version and capture environment pinned or recorded so browser updates do not silently change the baseline.
- Reproducing a historical PhantomJS result: retain a PhantomJS baseline. Do not expect Chrome to reproduce the output of an older WebKit renderer exactly.
- Investigating an unknown mismatch: first align viewport, crop, capture mode, and readiness; then compare the engines. Without the page, scripts, browser versions, runtime environment, output dimensions, and paired screenshots, the specific cause cannot be determined.
Troubleshooting common mismatches
- Text wraps differently or elements move: verify viewport width and responsive breakpoints first. If those match, the engine difference may account for the remaining layout change.
- The screenshot cuts off or includes extra content: compare capture bounds and viewport-versus-full-page mode, then inspect image dimensions.
- Images or page data are missing: wait for the specific image, selector, or application state your test needs. A generic navigation or network-idle condition may not prove that the visual state is ready.
- Only fonts, SVG, or certain CSS effects differ: after confirming the same geometry and page state, compare in the target engine. WebKit and Blink are different renderers, so exact parity is not assured.
- Results change between runs: record browser versions and environment, and use a consistent readiness condition. The cited documentation does not establish that a single wait duration or condition makes every page stable.

Can Chrome be configured to reproduce PhantomJS screenshots exactly?
Not reliably. Chrome and PhantomJS use different rendering engines, so matching viewport, crop, and page state does not guarantee pixel-for-pixel parity.

Does waiting for network idle guarantee that a page is ready for a screenshot?
No. It is one possible navigation condition, not a universal visual-readiness guarantee. Use a signal tied to the content your page needs to render.
