PFAS in Drinking Water: Reverse Osmosis vs. Activated Carbon Filters

Reverse osmosis and activated carbon can both reduce PFAS. Learn how they differ, what certification does—and does not—prove, and how to choose and maintain a filter.

Both reverse osmosis (RO) systems and granular activated carbon (GAC) filters can reduce PFAS in drinking water. The better choice depends on the exact system’s verified PFAS claim, installation and maintenance needs, and—if you choose RO—your tolerance for wastewater. Check the product’s specific PFAS claim in an accredited certifier’s directory; a standard number alone does not prove that a particular model reduces PFAS or meets every EPA drinking-water limit.

How the two filter types reduce PFAS

Granular activated carbon

GAC filters pass water through carbon, which captures chemicals as water moves through it. A carbon filter’s performance depends on the specific product and its certified contaminant-reduction claims; “carbon” on a label is not enough to establish PFAS reduction.

Reverse osmosis

RO systems push water across a thin membrane, separating treated water from a reject-water stream. EPA identifies both GAC and RO as treatment options for reducing PFAS in drinking water. Its guide estimates RO systems at $150–$1,000 before maintenance costs and says the systems discussed waste about one gallon for every gallon treated. Those are EPA’s guide figures, not a universal price or water-use rate for every current model. EPA’s filter guide

PFAS verification Look for an exact product claim for PFAS reduction under NSF/ANSI 53, then verify the product in the certifier’s directory. Look for an exact product claim for PFAS reduction under NSF/ANSI 58, then verify the product in the certifier’s directory.
Installation format Depends on the product; check its specifications. Depends on the product; check its specifications.
Ongoing upkeep Replace the cartridge on the manufacturer’s schedule. Replace cartridges and membranes as the manufacturer directs.
Water use EPA’s cited RO reject-water estimate does not apply to GAC. EPA’s guide estimates about one gallon wasted per gallon treated for the systems discussed; model performance varies.
Price Not stated in the cited EPA guide. EPA’s 2024 guide estimates $150–$1,000 before maintenance; this is not a current retail quote.

Choose based on the verified claim for the exact product, not on a general assumption that one technology removes more PFAS than the other. The cited guidance does not establish a universal winner, model-level reduction percentage, or maintenance interval. For municipal water, start with the utility’s water-quality information and the filter’s data sheet. For a private well, arrange testing and get local advice before selecting treatment.

How to verify a PFAS claim

  1. Find the exact make and model on the product label or data sheet. Confirm that its claim explicitly names PFAS reduction rather than relying only on “carbon,” “RO,” or a standard number.
  2. Check the certifier’s product directory for that model and the specific PFAS claim. EPA recommends looking for NSF/ANSI 53 for drinking-water treatment units or NSF/ANSI 58 for RO systems, specifically for PFAS reduction. If a listing is unclear, contact the certifier. EPA home-filter guidance
  3. Read the product’s current data sheet to see which PFAS are covered, any stated conditions, and the required replacement schedule. Do not infer an unlisted contaminant claim from certification to a standard alone.
  4. Compare the claim with the water-quality question you need answered. NSF describes its PFAS reduction claim threshold as below 20 parts per trillion. That threshold is not a promise that treated water meets each EPA maximum contaminant level (MCL). NSF notes that EPA’s 2024 rule set MCLs of 4.0 ppt for PFOA and PFOS, and 10 ppt for PFHxS, PFNA, and HFPO-DA (GenX), plus a hazard index for mixtures containing two or more of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and PFBS. EPA said in April 2024 that then-current PFAS filter certification standards did not yet show reduction to the levels in its new drinking-water rule. NSF’s PFAS guidance EPA’s filter guide

Maintenance and water source matter

Filter performance depends on keeping the system within the manufacturer’s instructions. Replace cartridges and membranes on schedule; a missed replacement can undermine the treatment you bought the system to provide. EPA’s guidance explains that filters remain effective only when properly maintained. EPA home-filter guidance

If your water comes from a public system

Use the utility’s water-quality information to understand the source water, then evaluate a point-of-use filter’s exact PFAS claim and operating instructions. Certification is evidence for a specific product claim, not a guarantee that every installation or untreated water source will produce the same result.
