If a blazer looks too long, boxy, or oversized on a petite frame, check the shoulder fit first. Sleeves and waist shape are often easier to adjust; a badly fitting shoulder can involve much more of the jacket’s structure. Shorten it only after checking the construction
Shortening a blazer may mean working through its lining, and the hem can interact with pockets, vents, and button placement. Have a tailor assess the particular jacket before cutting: changing the length can affect more than the raw edge, and a simple hem is not always possible.
How to fix a boxy waist
A tailor or an experienced sewer may be able to take in the side seams to create a closer shape. This is suitable only when the jacket has enough seam allowance and the adjustment will not distort its drape or closure. Before sewing, pin the intended shape and check the fit while moving and closing the blazer. Pressing the altered seams is part of finishing the change.

When shoulder fit is a deal-breaker
Shoulder seams that sit too far beyond your shoulder line, or a jacket that pulls when you move, may signal a structural mismatch. DIY tools and a sensible stopping point
For straightforward sewing work, the alteration guidance lists a seam ripper, tailor’s chalk or fabric marker, measuring tape, pins, matching thread, fabric scissors, a needle, and an iron; a sewing machine is optional. A seam ripper is used to open the lining for sleeve work. Having these tools does not make a structural shoulder alteration simple: if you are hesitant, consult a tailor.
