1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn the US ESRB system, the Persona series spans two age groups: five reviewed games are rated Teen (13+) and seven are rated Mature 17+. The Teen group is not automatically harmless, and the Mature games do not all contain the same material. The most useful way to choose is to start with the rating category, then check the descriptors and the specific scenes summarized for your platform or edition.
How this Persona age-rating ranking works
This is an editorial comparison of the reviewed North American ESRB records, not an official ESRB ranking of “maturity.” ESRB calls Teen suitable for ages 13 and up and defines Mature 17+ as content suitable only for people 17 and older. Its guide explains that content descriptors identify material that may have triggered a rating or may matter to parents and other players.

The order within each rating group reflects the kinds of concerns described in the individual summaries: violence and blood, sexual themes or nudity, language, alcohol, tobacco or drugs, and unusual imagery such as simulated gambling or Persona-summoning visuals. A title’s placement is therefore a practical editorial judgment, not a claim that one game is universally more mature than another. Ratings can also be listed separately by platform and edition.

Persona games ranked by ESRB category and content
| Editorial position | Game | ESRB record | Main descriptors | Distinctive concern |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Teen 1 | Persona 4 Arena | Teen | Language, Mild Blood, Suggestive Themes, Use of Tobacco, Violence | Fighting-game violence, suggestive dialogue and a recurring cigar depiction |
| Teen 2 | Persona 4 Arena Ultimax | Teen | Language, Mild Blood, Suggestive Themes, Use of Tobacco, Violence | Similar fighting violence, suggestive imagery and tobacco references |
| Teen 3 | Shin Megami Tensei: Persona | Teen | Fantasy Violence, Language, Partial Nudity, Simulated Gambling, Suggestive Themes | A casino sequence with virtual-money blackjack, slots and poker |
| Teen 4 | Persona 2: Eternal Punishment | Teen | Animated Blood, Strong Language, Suggestive Themes | Strong profanity and animated blood |
| Teen 5 | Persona 5 Tactica | Teen | Blood, Language, Partial Nudity, Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol, Violence | A drunken guard and a drinking contest in a tactical-combat story |
| Mature 17+ 1 | Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 | Mature 17+ | Blood, Language, Partial Nudity, Violence | The cited older PS2 listing does not show a sexual-themes descriptor |
| Mature 17+ 2 | Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 | Mature 17+ | Alcohol Reference, Animated Blood, Language, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Violence | Sexualized monster designs and a drinking-game scene |
| Mature 17+ 3 | Persona 4 Golden | Mature 17+ | Alcohol Reference, Language, Mild Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Violence | Current console listing reports Mild Blood; another platform record differs |
| Mature 17+ 4 | Persona 3 Portable | Mature 17+ | Blood, Language, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Violence | Sexualized demon designs, sexual references and gun-like summoning |
| Mature 17+ 5 | Persona 5 Strikers | Mature 17+ | Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Violence | Frequent fantasy combat, bloodstains and strong profanity |
| Mature 17+ 6 | Persona 5 Royal | Mature 17+ | Blood, Drug Reference, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Violence | Mask-removal blood effects, a close-range shooting and a brief drug-smuggling reference |
| Mature 17+ 7 | Persona 3 Reload | Mature 17+ | Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Violence | Self-harm-coded Persona summoning, gunshot imagery, blood and dismemberment |
The two groups should be read separately. A Teen game can still include blood, sexualized designs, tobacco, alcohol or gambling. Conversely, the Mature group covers a range from conventional fantasy violence to imagery that some families may find especially upsetting.

Which Persona game is least mature?
Among the reviewed records, Persona 4 Arena is the most conservative starting point if your main concerns are blood, sexual content and substance references. It is still a Teen-rated fighting game with violence, suggestive dialogue and a recurring cigar depiction, so “least mature” does not mean content-free. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax has the same Teen category and essentially the same concern profile, with suggestive imagery, tobacco and mild blood.
The original Persona remains Teen but adds partial nudity, suggestive themes and simulated gambling. Its casino contains virtual-money blackjack, slots and poker; the gambling is represented in the game rather than described as real-money wagering. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is also Teen, yet its record specifically includes animated blood and strong language, which may matter more than the lighter blood descriptor in the Arena games.
Persona 5 Tactica is the Teen entry with the broadest mix of listed concerns: blood, partial nudity, suggestive themes, language, alcohol use and violence. The rating summary calls out a drunken guard and a drinking contest. For a younger teen, that combination may be more relevant than the category alone.

Persona 4 Arena
This fighting-game spin-off is rated Teen for Language, Mild Blood, Suggestive Themes, Use of Tobacco and Violence. Combat is stylized rather than presented as realistic injury, but opponents can bleed. Dialogue includes suggestive material, and a character’s cigar use appears repeatedly. Choose it for a 13-to-16-year-old only after deciding whether tobacco imagery and fighting-game violence are acceptable.
Rank #2
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
Ultimax carries the same Teen descriptors: Language, Mild Blood, Suggestive Themes, Use of Tobacco and Violence. Its rating record highlights suggestive imagery, tobacco and fighting violence. The similar descriptor set means the practical family decision is much the same as for Persona 4 Arena; check the exact platform listing rather than assuming a sequel has a different rating.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona
The original game is Teen for Fantasy Violence, Language, Partial Nudity, Simulated Gambling and Suggestive Themes. The casino sequence is the unusual warning: characters play virtual-money blackjack, slots and poker. A parent who is comfortable with fantasy battles but avoids gambling references may find this more important than the Teen label.
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
This Teen-rated entry lists Animated Blood, Strong Language and Suggestive Themes. The key distinction is the “Strong Language” descriptor, which is more explicit than the Language label on the Arena records. Its blood is animated, but the descriptor still signals visible injury effects that a sensitive player should know about.
Persona 5 Tactica
Persona 5 Tactica is rated Teen for Blood, Language, Partial Nudity, Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol and Violence. The grid-based battles contain blood, while the story includes a drunken guard and a drinking contest. The alcohol material is depicted in a fictional context, but it is still a named descriptor and can be a deciding factor for families avoiding intoxication scenes.
Rank #3
What age is Persona 5 Royal appropriate for?
ESRB guidance places Persona 5 Royal at Mature 17+. Its record lists Blood, Drug Reference, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language and Violence. The summary describes blood effects when characters remove masks, a close-range shooting accompanied by blood, sexualized demon designs, sexual references, strong profanity and a brief drug-smuggling reference.
That combination makes Persona 5 Royal a poor fit for a 13-year-old under the ESRB system, even if the player is comfortable with fantasy combat. The strongest reasons are the cumulative mix of violence, sexual material, profanity and drug-related content rather than any single scene. Use the rating for the particular platform or edition you intend to buy, because ESRB records are not a universal statement about every release worldwide.
Is Persona 3 Reload appropriate for a 13-year-old?
Not according to the cited ESRB record: Persona 3 Reload is Mature 17+. The Switch 2 listing includes Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language and Violence. Its summary specifically describes characters shooting themselves in the head with a gun-like device to summon Personas, along with gunshot sounds or imagery, blood and dismemberment.
The summoning device is a fictional game mechanic, not a statement that the characters are attempting real-world suicide. Nevertheless, the visual coding closely resembles self-harm, so it can be a particularly serious trigger for families dealing with self-harm concerns. A 13-year-old may also encounter sexualized designs and strong language. Parents should review the exact regional and platform record before making an exception to the 17+ guidance.

What content warnings are in Persona 4 Golden?
Persona 4 Golden is rated Mature 17+. The current console listing cited here gives Alcohol Reference, Language, Mild Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes and Violence. Its summary mentions sexualized demon imagery, sexual references and a drinking-game scene in which characters show signs of intoxication despite not consuming alcohol.
Platform details matter. The cited console record says Mild Blood, while an earlier PlayStation Vita rating page reports Animated Blood. Do not merge those descriptions into one supposedly universal listing: identify the edition and platform when checking a purchase or setting a household rule.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
The older PS2 listing rates Persona 3 Mature 17+ for Blood, Language, Partial Nudity and Violence. Notably, that record does not show Sexual Themes among the descriptors displayed for the entry. This does not make the game suitable for children under 17; it means only that the cited listing uses a narrower descriptor set than later Persona 3 records.
Persona 3 Portable
Persona 3 Portable is Mature 17+ for Blood, Language, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes and Violence. The summary points to sexualized demon designs, sexual references and characters using a gun-like device to summon Personas. Those elements put it beyond the Teen category even though its combat is fantastical.

Persona 5 Strikers
Persona 5 Strikers carries Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language and Violence. Its action-focused battles can leave bloodstains, and the rating summary also notes sexualized demons, sexual references and strong profanity. It lacks the listed drug reference attached to Persona 5 Royal, but it remains Mature 17+ because the overall content mix is substantial.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
The original Persona 4 record lists Alcohol Reference, Animated Blood, Language, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes and Violence. A drinking-game scene shows characters appearing intoxicated even though they do not consume alcohol. Sexualized monster designs and sexual references are also called out, making this a materially different content profile from a simple Teen fighting-game entry.

| Violence and blood | Persona 4 Arena and Ultimax list Mild Blood; Persona 5 Tactica lists Blood | Persona 5 Royal includes a close-range shooting; Persona 3 Reload includes gunshot, blood and dismemberment imagery | Whether stylized combat is acceptable, and whether realistic-looking injury or dismemberment is a trigger |
| Sexual themes and nudity | Original Persona lists Partial Nudity and Suggestive Themes | Persona 4, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Reload list Sexual Themes and Partial Nudity | Sexualized demon designs, references and the difference between suggestive material and explicit depiction |

| Alcohol, tobacco and drugs | Persona 4 Arena and Ultimax list Use of Tobacco; Persona 5 Tactica lists Use of Alcohol | Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden list Alcohol Reference; Persona 5 Royal lists Drug Reference | Whether depiction, reference or intoxication scenes are permitted in your household |
| Unusual imagery | Original Persona includes Simulated Gambling | Persona 3 Portable and Reload use gun-like Persona summoning; Reload’s depiction resembles self-harm | Specific scenes can matter more than the broad age category |
How to choose a Persona game for a younger player
- Start with the age category. Treat Teen as a 13+ baseline and Mature 17+ as the ESRB’s 17-and-older category.
- Identify the sensitive topic. Decide whether your priority is blood, sexual themes, language, gambling, alcohol, tobacco, drugs or self-harm-coded imagery.
- Read the exact platform record. ESRB descriptors can differ by edition; Persona 4 Golden’s blood descriptor demonstrates why the platform matters.
- Check the summary for scene-level detail. A descriptor such as Violence does not tell you whether the concern is a stylized fight, a shooting, or dismemberment.
- Make a household decision rather than relying on the label alone. A Teen-rated title may be unsuitable for a particular 13-year-old, while two Mature games can raise very different concerns.
Important limits of this comparison
ESRB is the North American rating system used here. It is not a worldwide age standard; families outside the United States and Canada should consult their local rating board. The records cover a representative selection of mainline and spin-off Persona games, not every release in the franchise. Regional versions, ports and later editions can receive separate records or different wording.
