CGMagazine’s Eduard Gafton was most impressed by the visuals; his reaction to the new English voice cast was more reserved. The demo also introduced combat features that could make battles flow faster, though their eventual balance remains unknown.
What the Gamescom demo covered
Gafton’s 30-minute session was split between a story segment featuring the protagonist’s first Persona awakening and a combat-focused section in the first dungeon. That makes this a preview of a brief slice of the game, not a verdict on its complete story, dungeon design, or progression.
Gafton’s clearest positive reaction was to the presentation: “from the get-go, I was impressed by the visuals on show in Persona 4 Revival.” He points to character portraits, character models, and animated cutscenes as areas that received considerable attention. That is the preview writer’s assessment, rather than a statement from the developer.
How exploration and encounters work in the demo
A visual route guide
Gafton noticed an on-screen indicator pointing toward what appeared to be the fastest route forward through the dungeon. He hoped players would be able to turn it off, but the demo account does not confirm that a toggle exists. Whether the final game lets players customize or disable this guidance is therefore unsettled.

Guarding before a dungeon battle
The demo reportedly let players guard against Shadow attacks while exploring the dungeon. Gafton found this helped reduce the clunkiness of encounters, where a fight can begin whether the player or the Shadow has the advantage. The preview does not establish how often this feature matters or how it affects the finished game’s difficulty.
What changed in combat
Gafton describes several mechanics in the demo, including features associated with Persona 5 and two named additions for Revival. The account shows how the systems worked in that short session; it does not establish that their tuning or availability will be identical in the final release.

Baton Pass and All-Out Attacks
Baton Pass lets a character pass a turn to another party member. Gafton also reports All-Out Attacks after exploiting every enemy’s weakness. These mechanics give the party ways to build on a successful weakness hit rather than treating each character’s turn in isolation.
Prime Time and Series Finale
The demo’s more distinctive additions were Prime Time and Series Finale. According to Gafton, players fill a battle gauge through Baton Passes or standard and Persona attacks. Activating Prime Time then lets party members act consecutively without ending the turn or spending resources. Series Finale is described as a finisher capable of defeating a group of Shadows.

Those options could create powerful turn chains. Gafton worries that they may make encounters too easy, partly by comparison with his assessment of Persona 3 Reload. That is a prediction about how the systems might feel, not a tested finding about the full game’s balance.
Voice performances were less convincing to Gafton
Gafton was not yet sold on the all-new English voice cast. He also acknowledged that familiarity with the older performances may shape his reaction. The preview records one writer’s response to a short demo, not a settled judgment about the cast or the game’s full voice work.

How a separate Tokyo Game Show preview compares
RPGFan’s Matt Wardell described a separate 20-minute story demo at Tokyo Game Show. He noted expressive 3D character models during dialogue, improved anime cutscenes, attractive menus, and familiar-feeling music with a new vocalist. Wardell also found the dungeon layouts boxy and flat despite their refreshed visuals.
These are Wardell’s impressions of a different event demo, not features confirmed in Gafton’s Gamescom session. Together, the two accounts suggest that presentation upgrades may sit alongside familiar-feeling dungeon structure, but they are too brief to establish how the full game compares with Persona 4 or Persona 4 Golden.

What this preview can—and cannot—tell you
- Promising in Gafton’s account: refreshed character and cutscene visuals, plus combat options that connect weakness exploitation and turn passing.
- Still uncertain: whether the route indicator can be disabled, how the combat features are balanced across the full game, and how representative the demo’s dungeon is.
- Not established by these demos: the full feature set, how much older story or content is retained, or a definitive comparison with earlier versions.
For context, Gafton identifies Persona 4 Golden as an enhanced port released in 2012 and says he played it on PlayStation Vita. It is the predecessor he references, not another name for Persona 4 Revival.
RPGFan’s page reports a February 18, 2027 release date and PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam platforms. Those details are secondary-source claims and are not confirmed here by an official Atlus or Sega announcement, so treat them as unverified rather than settled release information.
