You can self-host Umami on a Vultr Linux server using Docker Compose, but doing so does not automatically make your website GDPR-compliant or prove that analytics will be “ultra-fast.” Vultr’s recipe combines Traefik, PostgreSQL, Redis, and Umami; it lists a starting server size of one CPU core and 2 GB of RAM. Treat that as the tutorial’s prerequisite, not a capacity or speed guarantee.
What Umami does—and what self-hosting changes
Umami describes itself as an open-source, privacy-first web analytics platform offered for self-hosting and as a managed service. It says its default approach uses no cookies and does not automatically collect personal data. Those are product claims, not a legal determination about every site or configuration. See Umami’s About page.
With self-hosting, you operate the server and are responsible for its database, access controls, updates, backups, and retention decisions. The managed alternative, Umami Cloud, reduces that infrastructure work, while leaving you responsible for deciding whether the service and your use of it meet your obligations.
What the Vultr deployment includes
The Vultr Docker Compose guide describes a stack with four main components:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Traefik: reverse proxy and automatic TLS handling.
- PostgreSQL: persistent analytics database.
- Redis: session caching.
- Umami: the analytics application.
Vultr’s guide, updated September 9, 2026, lists a Linux server with at least one CPU core and 2 GB of RAM as its prerequisite. That is a starting requirement for that tutorial—not a guarantee that a particular workload will fit. Traffic, retention, and workload affect the resources a deployment needs.
Choose a deployment approach
Umami documents several hosting patterns, from a single machine to separated application and database infrastructure, as well as its managed cloud service. The right choice depends on how much infrastructure you want to operate and isolate; these options do not, by themselves, establish a speed advantage.

| Approach | What it means | Operational trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Single server | Application and database share one server. | Simpler to operate, but both depend on the same machine. |
| Separate application and database machines | Application and database run on distinct servers. | Separates infrastructure but adds deployment and maintenance work. |
| App hosting with a separate database | The application runs on a hosting platform and uses a separate database service. | Reduces some server management while requiring coordination across services. |
| Umami Cloud | Umami is provided as a managed service. | Avoids operating your own Umami server; it is not self-hosting. |
These patterns are described in Umami’s hosting guide and its About page. The Vultr walkthrough is one specific Docker Compose deployment, not a benchmark comparing these approaches.
Deploy Umami on Vultr with Docker Compose
Follow the Vultr guide for the Compose-based deployment and its current commands: Deploy Umami Analytics on Vultr with Docker Compose. The guide describes Umami version 3.1.0; check the live instructions and supported image version before using commands, since versions can change. Do not mix this recipe’s service requirements with the prerequisites for a source installation.

- Provision the Linux server. The Vultr tutorial calls for at least one CPU core and 2 GB RAM. Consider expected traffic and retention when deciding whether that starting size is appropriate.
- Configure the deployment as the guide specifies. Its Compose stack brings up Traefik, PostgreSQL, Redis, and Umami. Use the guide’s current steps for server preparation, environment configuration, and container startup rather than substituting unverified commands.
- Connect a hostname and TLS. The recipe uses Traefik as the reverse proxy and for automatic TLS. Confirm that the hostname and DNS configuration point to the server as the guide requires.
- Sign in and secure the account. If following Umami’s generic Docker installation path, the installation documentation says to change the default
admin/umamipassword immediately after first login. Do not leave default credentials in place. See Umami’s installation instructions. - Set operating policies before relying on the data. Restrict administrative access, arrange database backups, plan updates, and decide how long to retain analytics before putting the service into routine use.
Vultr Docker deployment versus source installation
Umami’s source-install documentation specifies Node.js 18.18 or newer and PostgreSQL 12.14 or newer. It also documents Docker Compose and prebuilt Docker images. Those version prerequisites apply to the documented source-install path; the Vultr guide instead presents a particular containerized deployment with additional services. Consult the installation page for the current supported requirements and instructions rather than assuming the two paths are interchangeable.
Does self-hosted Umami make a site GDPR-compliant?
Not automatically. Umami says its product is GDPR-compliant out of the box and describes a no-cookie default that does not automatically collect personal data. Those statements do not establish that every deployment, website, or analytics use satisfies applicable law.

The site operator still needs to assess the actual data flow and configuration, what the site tells visitors, who can access analytics, how long information is retained, and which obligations apply. Hosting location or avoiding cookies alone does not settle that assessment. The available product and deployment documentation is not a substitute for legal advice or a determination by a regulator.

Umami’s FAQ says self-hosted data is kept indefinitely unless the operator deletes it. Retention is therefore an operational choice, not something to assume the application will enforce automatically.

What “ultra-fast” can—and cannot—mean here
The Vultr recipe and Umami product documentation do not provide a comparative performance benchmark for this setup. The tutorial’s one-core, 2 GB starting prerequisite is not a speed test or a promise that the server will handle a given volume of traffic. Treat performance as workload- and configuration-dependent; do not choose a server size on the basis of an “ultra-fast” claim alone.
